The control of food intake is a complex phenomenon caused by interactions between central and peripheral control mechanisms. The hypothalamic and brain stem regions have been identified as centers for food intake and energy expenditure in animals and humans. Of these, the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamic areas are involved in the control of food intake. Also, large amounts of neurotransmitters known to be involved in feeding are present in the hippocampus. Paricularly, tryptophan hydroxylase(TPH), known as a factor in the control of food intake, is present in high levels in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and the hippocampus. In this study, TPH expression levels in the hypothalamic and hippocampal regions of fasting, anorexia mutant, and control mice were compared using RT-PCR and immunohistochemical methods. Differences in body weight among the fasting, anorexia mutant, and control groups wire observed. No statistical significance was noted in the number of TPH-immunoactivity in the hypothalamic nuclei, but relatively higher populations of such fibers were observed in the fasting group : the control group yielded samples with an overall value of 170.3${\pm}$3.5 in terms of immunoreactivity-induced optical density, whereas the fasting group yielded a value of 168.3${\pm}$2.6, and the anorexia mutant group 171.3${\pm}$0.8(lower values represent higher immunoreactivity), In fasting mice, stained neuronal bodies were observed in the CA3 and dentate gyrus regions of the hippocampus, which was different from the hippocampal regions of the control and anorexia mutant mice. The RT-PCR procedures were performed using whole brains, precluding any statistically noticeable findings in relation to specific regions, although the fasting and anorexia mutant groups showed 123.3% and 102.9%, respectively, of the TPH mRNA level in the control. The overall results present evidences of the role of TPH in the decrease in food intake during fasting caused by exogenic factors and in genetically acquired anorexia. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of nausea, vomiting, anorexia, fatigue and quality of life as well as to determine the relationship between those variables and identify the influencing factors on fatigue and quality of life in stomach cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Method: Subjects were 94 stomach cancer patients undergoing postoperational chemotherapy in a general hospital in Seoul. Nausea and vomiting were measured with Rhodes et al(1984) and anorexia with one 5-point item. Fatigue was measured using Lee's tool(1999) except open questions. The tool for quality of life was modified based on the Quality of Life Index by Padilla et al(1983). Result: Subjects reported low level of fatigue(mean=3.86, range=0-10) compared with the results of previous researches and moderate quality of life(mean=2.64, range=1-4). Fatigue was positively correlated with nausea, vomiting and anorexia(r=.21 ~ .55, p<.05). Quality of life was negatively correlated with nausea, vomiting, anorexia(r= -.24 ~ -.45, p<.05) and fatigue (r=-.61, p<.01). Multiple regression analysis revealed that activity level, vomiting before admission, anorexia during chemotherapy and age explained 52.8% of the variance in fatigue. Fatigue, anorexia before admission, age and sex explained 50.5% of the variance in quality of life. Fatigue and quality of life were not influenced by the stage of disease, nor weight change. Conclusion: These results may contribute to a better understanding of how much the side effects of anticancer drugs can affect fatigue and quality of life in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Also it is the remarkable fact that symptoms remaining after discharge such as vomiting or anorexia continued until re-admission, contributing to patients fatigue and lowered their quality of life.

Mice homozygous for the lethal autosomal recessive anorexia mutation (anx) present with premature death around postnatal day 22. The anorexia mutant mice also present phenotypes such as reduced body weight, decreased food intake, and abnormal behavior characteristics such as body tremors, hyperactivity, uncoordinated gait, and head weaving. In order to investigate the expression of c-Fos in the hippocampus of anorexia mutant mice, the immunohistochemistry was performed in this study. The anorexia mutant mice exhibited lower expression of c-Fos in the hippocampus regions thBn the control group. In the CA3 and dentate gyrus, the number of c-Fos-positive cells in anorexia mutant mice was noticeably lower than that in control mice. However, no significant difference was found in the number of c-Fos-positive cells in CA1 of the two groups. The result suggests that the phenotypic characteristics of anorexia mutant mice may be associated with the hippocampal deficits of c-Fos expression.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends of Chinese clinical research in the last 5 years of Chinese herbal medicine treatment for anorexia in children, and to find ways to utilize the diagnostic criteria and herbal medicine treatment for children who have anorexia in Korea. Methods The authors searched literatures using China National Knowledge Infrastructure published from January 1, 2015 to June 18, 2019. Selected literatures were collected in order of recent publication year. And then, demographic data, duration of illness, intervention, treatment period, outcome, and adverse events were analyzed. In addition, the diagnostic criteria for anorexia in children are categorized and presented in chart. Results A total of 50 papers were included in the analysis of this study. In the selected studies, the most commonly used diagnostic criteria for anorexia in children were ${\ll}$Zhu Futang Practice of Pediatrics${\gg}$ in Western medicine and ${\ll}$Diagnostic and therapeutic criteria for TCM syndromes${\gg}$ in traditional Chinese medicine. As a result, in all the studies reporting total efficacy, the total effective rate of the treatment group treated with herbal medicine was significantly higher than that of the control group. Also, appetite recovery rate and weight gain were significantly higher, gastric emptying time and appetite recovery time were significantly shorter in the treatment group. Conclusions Herbal medicine treatment can help improve anorexia in children. In Korea, diagnostic criteria for anorexia in children should be established. In addition, criteria should be established to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicine treatment.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to address a case of a Parkinson's disease with anorexia and nausea. Methods: A patient diagnosed with Parkinson's disease with anorexia and nausea was treated with Korean medicine therapies including herbal medication (Hyangsayukgunja-tang), acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and moxibustion for 7days. To evaluate the therapeutic effect, we used a visual analogue scale(VAS). Results: After the treatment, the VAS score for anorexia and nausea had decreased. Conclusion: These results suggested that Korean medicine therapies with Hyangsayukgunja-tang have a beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
The present study was conducted to identify the mechanism about the regulation of appetite by examining the expression patterns of neuropeptide Y in the hypothalamus of mice either fasting mouse for 24 hours or with anorexia mutant mouse. In order to investigate the patterns of expression of neurpeptide Y, immunohistochemistry was employed for measurements at the tissue level, along with the molecular biological techniques of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) and dot blotting. The results of this study are as follows. The level of expression of neruopeptide Y, a neuropeptide known to enhance appetite, was shown to be lowered in the arcuate nucleus(ARC), paraventricular nucleus(PVN), lateral hypothalamic area(LHA), and dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus(DMN) in both the fasting and anorexia mutant groups when measured via immunohistochemistry, a tissue-level method. RT-PCR and dot blotting, the molecular biological methods employed in this study, revealed that the level of neuropeptide Y mRNA in the entire hypothalamus was similar in the control and fasting groups and lower in the anorexia mutant group. The results of the present study showed that while the levels of expression of the neuropeptide Y in the various hypothalamic regions studied did not exhibit regular increases or decreases when measured immunohistochemically. But the entire hypothalamus via molecular biological methods showed that the changes in these levels were more definite in the anorexia mutant group than in the fasting group.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aroma oil inhalation using peppermint and bergamot on nausea vomiting and anorexia in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Method: Study subjects were 30 patients who had experienced nausea and vomiting when they had been hospitalized in K university hospital located in D city after receiving more than two Cisplatin combination chemotherapy treatments. Among them 15 patients were in the experimental group doing aroma oil inhalation and the other 15 patients were in the control group without aroma oil inhalation. The data were collected from February 1, 2002 to May 17, 2002. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 program using frequency, percentage, $x^2$-test, t-test, Repeated Measures ANOVA. Result: 1) The degree of nausea and vomiting in the experimental group with aroma oil inhalation using peppermint and bergamot were significantly lower than that of the control group. 2) The degree of anorexia in the experimental group with aroma oil inhalation using peppermint and bergamot were significantly lower than that of the control group. Conclusion: aroma oil inhalation was effective for relieving patients' nausea vomiting and anorexia receiving chemotherapy. Therefore, it is proposed that aroma oil inhalation should be applied as a supportive nursing arbitration method to relieve patients' nausea vomiting and anorexia who are receiving chemotherapy.
Food intake is regulated by both central and peripheral mechanisms. In the central nervous, the hypothalamus acts for autonomic and endocrine homeostasis. The paraventricular nucleus(PVN) of hypothalamus is an imprtant site of interaction in central feeding pathways. Neuroepetide Y(NPY)is one of the most powerful neurochemical stimulants of food intake known. Also brain nitric oxide(NO), known as neurotransmitter, is involved in the mechanisms that regulate food intake. In this experiment, 24h fasting mice and anorexia mutant mice have been to examine the expression of NPY, which is the major neuropeptide increasing food intake. Double staining with NPY and nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide-phosphate diaphorase(NADPH-d), followed by immunohistochemical method and image analysis, have been used to observe coexisting neurons and the level of expression of each neurons. The results were as follows. 1) NPY-immunoreactivitys reduced immune response of the hypothalamus, particularly paraventricular nucleus(PVN), in anorexia mutant mice. Decreased level of NPY is assumed to be a major pathological factor in anorexia mutant mice. On the other hand, PVN in hypothalamus of fasting mice showed increased immunoreactivity which is in agreement of other researchers. 2) NPY and NADPH-d double staining revealed coexisting neurons in the cerebral cortex. Fasting mice had a tendency to have increased level of coexisting neurons compared to the control group. Compared to the control group, fasting mice express is not increase level of NPY-immunoreactivity, while anorexia mutant mice tended to have a decreased level.
Objectives : QT interval prolongation and dispersion known as indicators of an increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death have been reported to be prolonged in patients with anorexia nervosa. The aims of this study were to compare conduction abnormalities in Korean patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and to examine its relation with clinical and laboratory factors. Methods : We retrospectively examined 45 women with anorexia nervosa and 75 women with bulimia nervosa who were assessed by 12-lead electrocardiogram at baseline. QT interval and corrected QT interval, QT dispersion of the difference between the longest and shortest QT intervals, and abnormal U wave were measured for conduction abnormalities. Results : QT interval was significantly longer in patients with anorexia nervosa compared with those with bulimia nervosa. There were no differences in QTc (Corrected QT), QTd (QT dispersion) and abnormal U wave between patients with anorexia nervosa and those with bulimia nervosa. QTd was significantly correlated with the lowest ever lifetime body mass index ($kg/m^2$) as well as the serum amylase level in patients with anorexia nervosa. Conclusions : These results suggest some conduction abnormalities reported in patients with anorexia nervosa are also found in patients with bulimia nervosa. It appears that severity of weight loss and purging behavior could affect the cardiac arrhythmia in patients with eating disorders. Appropriate attention should be paid to cardiac involvement in patients with eating disorders.
