This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a helical flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one is rotating. The pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of Non-Newtonian fluid, aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC) and bentonite with inner cylinder rotational speed of 0~400 prm. Also, the visualization of helical flows has been performed to observe the unstable waves. The results of present study reveal the relation of the Reynolds number Re and Rossby number Ro with respect to the skin friction coefficients. In somehow, they show the existence of flow instability mechanism. The pressure losses increase as the rotational speed increases, but the gradient of pressure losses decreases as the Reynolds number increases in the regime of transition and turbulence. And the increase of flow disturbance by Taylor vortex in a concentric annulus with rotating inner cylinder results in the decrease of the critical Reynolds number with the increase of skin friction coefficient.

Human soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, skin, and blood vessels, are an interesting subject because damage to them can be observed in everyday life. Besides the lack of available experimental data and the large deformation upon loading, the anisotropic and compressible nature of annulus fibrosus makes it more difficult to find a simple material model. A fiber-reinforced hyperelastic material model is used to determine the stress-strain curves upon uniaxial loading. The energy potential function for annulus fibrosus is composed of three different parts: matrix, fibers, and matrix-fiber interaction, which accounts for the angles between two families of fibers. In this paper, two different types of energy potential function for the matrix are considered, and are inserted into the fiber-reinforced model. The calculated results are compared with the Neo-Hookean model and experimental data, and reasonable agreement is observed overall.

An experimental investigation is conducted to study a 2-phase vertically upward hydraulic transport of solid particles by water and non-Newtonian fluids in a slim hole concentric annulus with rotation of the inner cylinder. Rheology of particulate suspensions in viscoelastic fluids is of importance in many applications such as particle removal from surfaces, transport of proppants in fractured reservoir and cleaning of drilling holes, etc. In this study, a clear acrylic pipe was used in order to observe the movement of solid particles. Annular velocities varied from 0.3 m/s to 2.0 m/s. The mud systems included fresh water and CMC solutions. Main parameters considered in the study were inner-pipe rotation speed, fluid flow regime and particle injection rate. A particle rising velocity and pressure drop in annulus have been measured for fully developed flows of water and of aqueous solutions. For both water and 0.2% CMC solutions, the higher the concentration of the solid particles is, the larger the pressure gradients become.
Age-related changes in the geometry of human lumbar spine would lead to changes of its mechanical behaviors. To investigate the effects of the geometric changes, no age-related changes in the material/mechanical properties were considered. Using the finite element method. two age-related models of lumbar spine segments (L3-L4) were constructed. The annulus of the models was modeled as laminate composite elements with 16 layers and 6 materials. The spinal stiffness and facet reaction of the lumbar spine increased with the age-related geometric changes in various combined loadings. Fiber and transverse tensile strains of the inner annulus. cancellous bone stress and end-plate stress decreased with the age-related geometric changes whereas fiber/layer compressive strains of the annulus. facet reaction. ligament reaction and end-plate rigidity increased. Consequently, it appears that in the normal age-related deterioration of discs, the age-related geometric change contributes to the increase of spinal stiffness (the decrease in range of the motion segment), preventing an excessive deformation of the disc.
BACKGROUND: Children with significant adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) may show right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. We aimed to evaluate RV dysfunction in such children before adenotonsillectomy by evaluating peak longitudinal right atrial (RA) strain (PLRAS) in systole. PLRAS, electrocardiogram (ECG) and conventional echocardiographic parameters were compared to distinguish children with significant ATH with sleep-related breathing disorder (ATH-SRBD) from controls. METHODS: Fifty-six children (23 controls and 33 children with ATH-SRBD without symptoms of heart failure) were retrospectively studied. Preoperative echocardiograms and ECGs of children with ATH-SRBD who underwent adenotonsillectomy were compared to those of controls. Available postoperative ECGs and echocardiograms were also analyzed. RESULTS: Preoperatively, prolonged maximum P-wave duration (Pmax) and P-wave dispersion (PWD), decreased PLRAS, and increased tricuspid annulus E/E' were found in children with ATH-SRBD compared to those of controls. From the receiver operating characteristic curves, PLRAS was not inferior compared to tricuspid annulus E/E', Pmax, and PWD in differentiating children with ATH-SRBD from controls; however, the discriminative abilities of all four parameters were poor. In children who underwent adenotonsillectomy, echocardiograms $1.2{\pm}0.4$ years after adenotonsillectomy showed no difference in postoperative PLRAS and tricuspid annulus E/E' when compared with those of the preoperative period. CONCLUSIONS: Impaired RA deformation was reflected as decreased PLRAS in children with ATH-SRBD before adenotonsillectomy. Decreased PLRAS in these children may indicate subtle RV dysfunction and increased proarrhythmic risk. However, usefulness of PLRAS as an individual parameter in differentiating preoperative children with ATH-SRBD from controls was limited, similar to those of tricuspid annulus E/E', Pmax, and PWD.
This study investigated the effects of KN and process time on the formation of a compound layer at a nitriding temperature of 540℃ for SCR420H material. As a result of controlled nitriding from 3 h to 20 h at KN 1.2 atm-1/2, compound layers were formed up to about 10 ㎛, and an effective hardening depth of about 460 ㎛ was obtained. Initially, an ε+γ' complex phase was formed, and the phase fraction changed over time, and finally, the fraction of ε phase decreased to less than 1%. With higher KN, the compound thickness increased, a pore layer was formed on the surface, and the surface hardness decreased. By applying the controlled nitriding process, it was possible to produce annulus gears with a compound thickness of 12.8 ㎛ and an ε phase of 5% or less. The annulus gears made through controlled nitriding were mounted on a 6-speed transmission and tested for durability. As a result, the durability test of 250,000 km was satisfied, and the transmission efficiency was also confirmed to be expected.
Heat transfer experiments at a vertical annulus passage were carried out in the SPHINX(Supercritical Pressure Heat Transfer Investigation for NeXt Generation) to investigate the heat transfer behaviors of supercritical $CO_2$. The collected test data are to be used for the reactor core design of the SCWR (SuperCritical Water-cooled Reactor). The mass flux was in the range of 400${\sim}$1200 kg/$m^2$s and the heat flux was chosen up to 150 kW/$m^2$. The selected pressures were 7.75 and 8.12 MPa. The heat transfer data were analyzed and compared with the previous tube test data. The test results showed that the heat transfer characteristics were similar to those of the tube in case of a normal heat transfer mode and degree of heat transfer deterioration became smaller than that in the tube. Comparison of the experimental heat transfer coefficients with the predicted ones by the existing correlations showed that there was not a distinct difference between the correlations.
Field measurements have revealed that the pressure drop over a borehole during drilling of a slim oil well or a well with a long reach can depend significantly on the rotation speed of the drill pipe. An accurate prediction of the annular frictional pressure drop is therefore important for conditions where the annular clearance is small. An experimental study was carried out to study solid-liquid two phase flow in a slim hole annulus. Annular velocities of carrier fluids varied from 0.2 m/s to 1.5 m/s. The carrier fluids which were utilized included tap water and CMC water solutions. Pressure drops and average flow rates were measured for the parameters such as inner-pipe rotary speed, carrier fluid velocity, hole inclination and particle injection rate. For both water and CMC solutions, the higher the concentration of the solid particles is, the larger the pressure gradients become.
