  • Hwang Hee (1363~1452), a well-known politician in the beginning of Joseon Dynasty, tremendously contributed to opening the glorious civilization during the reign of King Sejong. He was a public servant canonized in the Jongmyo Shrine and a good example of clean government officials in the Joseon era. There were two requests from scholars of 8 provinces across the country to ask his tablet to be enshrined in the Confucian shrine. As a matter of fact, historical evaluation as well as his status is somewhat extraordinary, but his appraisal during his living times was not consistent according to the annals of Joseon like "Sejong Chronicles". Many of his corruptions and unjust behaviors were shown in the annals. It is hard to accept all of them as truth. There are some questions raised about his character, but also some as intentionally bad judgments. However they should be respected now since the authors were trying to write objectively based on their consciousness. Hwang Hee was highly evaluated and popular among bureaucrats because of his generosity. On the contrary, his generosity was so big that he had problems dealing with his family matters according to an official writing historic chronicles. I think this judgment explains well the reason why then some raised questions about his reputation. This goes well with Confucian's saying, "Each fault by humans has a pattern. Seeing one's fault will let you know the one's personality."

Study on Horn-shaped Moxa Treatment in the Annals and Anthologies of Joseon-Korea (조선 왕실의료문헌과 문집에 나타난 우각구법(牛角灸法) 연구)

  • Objectives: Moxa treatment has outstanding effects that are frequently facilitated in a clinical setting, and it is also known to have positive effects for immunity and relief of pain through various studies. Currently, moxa treatment has become diversified in many ways. One of the moxa treatment techniques that was frequently used during the Joseon Dynasty was Woogakgubeop (牛角灸法, horn-shaped moxa treatment). This articles aims to disclose the fact that the Woogakgubeop is the technique applicable to the origin of the Large moxa treatments of today. Also, the writings of Woogakgubeop recorded in the royal medical documentations, such as the Chronicles of the Royal Families of the Joseon Dynasty, the Seungjeonwonilgi (The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat) and others, are analyzed and the characteristics of the Woogakgubeop are cleared through it. Methods: From the royal medical documents, the Chronicles of the Royal Families of the Joseon Dynasty and the Seungjeonwonilgi, articles related Woogakgubeop were extracted and analyzed. Records of each document were facilitated for the DB search. In addition to these two documents, the records of written literature were surveyed as well. The written literature are appropriate to express the experiences of intellectuals at the time. Results and Conclusions: 1. Considering that Woogakgubeop is a single therapy, there exists relatively many records in addition to the specialized medical documents, and through them, it is known that Woogakgubeop was a widely known therapy in the middle to later parts of Joseon in general. 2. Woogakgubeop is a method that addresses problems contained within the existing moxa treatment techniques. By enlarging the size of the mugwort wick, it strengthens the heat energy of the moxa treatment to reduce the frequency of applying moxa treatment. When undertaking the method to empty the wick inside the mugwort, the pain of a fever patient will be reduced and burn damage to the skin is minimized. 3. Wind-cold type weakness and other general moxa treatment techniques have been used for various symptoms detailed, including chest pain, tinnitus, carbuncle, cellulites, cold sense of leg, colic, diarrhea and other illnesses. In addition, it may generate strong fever, and was used to implement the Yeonjebeop (煉臍法). 4. Woogakgubeop is applicable to the origin of Large moxa treatment of today and it provides important bibliographic base thereof.

A Study on the Miruk-ri Bongsan Stone Landmark - With a Relevance to the 'Moonkyung County Bongsan' and Choryung Bongsan - (미륵리 봉산석표(封山石標)에 관한 연구(硏究) - '문경읍(聞慶邑) 봉산(封山)' 및 조령봉산(鳥嶺封山)과 관련(關聯)하여 -)

  • The purpose of the study is to examine the relation between 'Miruk-ri Bongsan Stone Landmark' found in 1997 and 'Moonkyung County Bonsan' and Choryung Bongsan. Relevant literature was analyzed and the spots were investigated as well. Data used are geography book, maps, town chronicles and the Annals of the Chosun Dynasty in the late period of the Chosun Dynasty. The major findings are as follows ; (1)'Miruk-ri Bongsan Stone Landmark' is inferred as Stone Landmark of Choryung Bongsan. (2)Choryung Bongsan was designated to protect a strategic forest lands established around the Choryung Pass for the defence of Chungju which is the door of Capital city, Hanyang, and connected to South Han River. (3)'Miruk-ri Bongsan Stone Landmark' seems to be erected at Miruk-ri because it was a spot of traffic importance, which connects among Choryung, Moonkyung County and Chungju County in notifying the importance of Bongsan to travelers.

AT WHAT TIME A DAY BEGINS IN THE KOREAN HISTORY? (한국사에서 하루의 시작은 언제부터인가?)

  • We have reproduced the records of lunar occultation recorded in the History of Three Kingdoms(삼국사기), the History of the Koryo Dynasty (고려사), the Annals of the Choson Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄), the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of the Choson Dynasty (승정원일기), and obtained the epochs of their realizations. We analysed these results to understand how the system of hours had been kept and when a day began. During most of the periods encompassed by these annals, the 12 double hours(12진각법) and the system of 100 divisions of the day (백각법) had been used when the lunar and the solar eclipses were calculated by royal astronomers. In these systems, the starting point of a day is midnight. On the other hand, the five watch system of hours (경점법), in which a night is divided into five watches, was also used. In this system, a day begins at the sunrise. We found that the traditional twilight, called dusk and dawn (혼명) and used in the east Asian countries, largely corresponds to the nautical twilight in modern concepts. This fact means that the Korean expressions and words for time system in every day life had originated form the five watch system of hours. We pointed out that the sunrise and sunset were convenient boundary lines to ancient astronomers, as well as to farmers in the agricultural society. Our results can be used to determine the exact epoch of each astronomical record in chronicles.
