The Quantitative Diffusion-Tensor Anisotropy of Human Brain Using Fast STEAM DTI

  • Purpose: To obtain quantitative diffusion-tensor anisotropy information of human cerebral structu using turbo STEAM diffusion-tensor imaging. Method: Quantitative diffusion anisotropy MR images were obtained in 7 healthy adults using turbo STEAM sequence and a combination of tetrahedral and orthogonal diffusi gradients. Both relative anisotropy(RA) and fractional anisotropy(FA) values were measured various brain regions. The anisotropy index was then compared with the reported valu resulting from EPI-based diffusion tensor imaging.

  • Purpose: To obtain normative human skeletal muscle data and evaluate quantitative diffusion-ten anisotropy information using diffusion-tensor imaging technique. Method: Quantitative extremity muscle diffusion tensor MR images were obtained in 5 healt adults by using turbo STEAM sequence and a combination of tetrahedral and orthogon diffusion gradients. Relative anisotropy(RA) and fractional anisotropy(FA) values we measured in soleus and gastrocnemius muscle in addition to mean ADC value.

  • Characterization of discontinuous media is an endeavor that poses great challenge to engineers in practice. Since the inherent defects in cracked domains can substantially influence material resistance and govern its behavior, a lot of work is dedicated to efficiently model such effects. In order to overcome difficulties of material instability problems, one needs to comprehensively represent the geometry of cracks along with their impact on the mechanical properties of the intact material. In the present study, stress-strain results from laboratory experiments on Inada granite was used to derive crack tensor as a tool for the evaluation of fractured domain stability. It was found that the formulations proposed earlier could satisfactorily be employed to attain crack tensor via the invariants of which judgment on cracks population and induced anisotropy is possible. The earlier criteria based on crack tensor analyses were reviewed and compared to the results of the current study. It is concluded that the geometrical parameters calculated using mechanical properties could confidently be used to judge the anisotropy as well as strength of the cracked domain.

Image Reconstruction of Eigenvalue of Diffusion Principal Axis Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (확산텐서영상을 이용한 확산 주축의 고유치 영상 재구성)

  • Purpose: The objective of this work to construct eigenvalue maps that have information of magnitude of three primary diffusion directions using diffusion tensor images. Materials and Methods: To construct eigenvalue maps, we used a 3.0T MRI scanner. We also compared the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse matrix method and the SVD (single value decomposition) method to calculate magnitude of three primary diffusion directions. Eigenvalue maps were constructed by calculating of magnitude of three primary diffusion directions. We did investigate the relationship between eigenvalue maps and fractional anisotropy map. Results: Using Diffusion Tensor Images by diffusion tensor imaging sequence, we did construct eigenvalue maps of three primary diffusion directions. Comparison between eigenvalue maps and Fractional Anisotropy map shows what is difference of Fractional Anisotropy value in brain anatomy. Furthermore, through the simulation of variable eigenvalues, we confirmed changes of Fractional Anisotropy values by variable eigenvalues. And Fractional anisotropy was not determined by magnitude of each primary diffusion direction, but it was determined by combination of each primary diffusion direction. Conclusion: By construction of eigenvalue maps, we can confirm what is the reason of fractional anisotropy variation by measurement the magnitude of three primary diffusion directions on lesion of brain white matter, using eigenvalue maps and fractional anisotropy map.

The Software Development for Diffusion Tensor Imaging

  • Purpose: We developed the software for diffusion tensor imaging and evaluated its feasibility in norm brains. Method: Five normal volunteers, aged from 25 to 29 years, were examined on a 1.5 T MR system. the diffusion tensor pulse sequence used a SE-EPI with 6 diffusion gradie directions of (1, 1, 0), (-1, 1,0), (1, 0, 1), (-1, 0, 1), (0, 1, 1), (0, 1, -1) and also with no diffusion gradient. A b-factor of 500 sec/mm2 was used. Measurement parameter were as follows; TR/TE=10000 ms/99 ms, FOV=240 mm, matrix=128$\times$128, slice thickness/gap=6 mm/0 mm, bandwidth=91 kHz and the number of total slices=20. Four repeated axial diffusion images were averaged for diffusion tensor imaging. A total scan 11 of 4 min 30 sec was used. Six full diffusion tensor components of Dxx, Dyy, Dzz, Dxy, Dxz and Dyz were obtained using two-point linear regression model from 7 diffusion-weight images at each pixel and fractional anisotropy and lattice index images was estimated fr their eigenvectors and eigenvalues. Our program was written on a platform of IDL. W evaluated the qualities of fractional anisotropy and lattice index images of normal brains a knew whether our software for diffusion tensor imaging may be feasible.

  • The fractional anisotropy value of the brain white matter region was analyzed by Tract-Based Spatial Statics(TBSS) method after acquiring the diffusion tensor image to identify the presence or absence of brain white matter damage to smoking in male. As a result, smokers showed lower fractional anisotropy than non-smokers in all areas but fractional anisotropy values were not statistically significant. the fractional anisotropy value, on the other hand, was statistically significant only for the right choroid plexus. In other words smoking, although, does not significantly affect the micro structural changes of brain white matter, it affects the choroid plexus area.

  • Diffusion tensor images were obtained for middle-aged men according to the AUDIT-K scale. As a result of the fractional anisotropy (FA) value of the gyrus nerve fibers in the brain region measured and analyzed by the Tract-Based Spatial Statics, FA values of general drinkers were measured lower than those of estimated alcohol use disabled people. This was statistically significant. In other words, the use of alcohol significantly affects the anatomic microstructural changes measured in the Gyrus of the brain region, and it may damage the nerve fiber tract and affect the functional abnormalities associated with it.

  • Reynolds averaged Wavier-Stokes simulations based on the Reynolds stress model was performed to investigated the effect of inlet flow angle on the distributions of the Reynolds stress tensor inside tip leakage vortex of a linear compressor cascade. Two different inlet flow angles ${\beta}=29.3^{\circ}$(design condition) and $36.5^{\circ}$(off-design condition) were considered. Stress tensor analysis, which transforms the Reynolds stress into the principal direction, was applied to show an anisotropy of the normal stresses. Whereas the anisotropy was highest in the region where the tip leakage vortex collides the suction side of the blade and tip leakage flow enters between blade tip of the pressure side and the endwall, it had the lowest value at the center of tip leakage vortex. It was also found that the magnitude of maximum shear stress at design condition was greater than that of off-design condition.

Analysis of transmissivity tensor in an anisotropic aquifer (이방성 대수층에서의 투수량계수텐서 해석)

  • An Aquifer test was carried out on five boreholes to determine the hydrologic anisotropy and the major groundwater flow direction in the aquifer system of the study area. With an assumption of the aquifer's anisotropy and homogeneity, the major transmissivity(T(equation omitted)), the minor transmissivity( $T_{ηη}$ ), and primary tensor direction ($\theta$) for each borehole were determined from the test. Besides the boreholes BH-1, BH-4 and BH-5, the anisotropy transmissivity tensor values of BH-2 and BH-3 did not correspond with the assumption. Thereafter the values were plotted on the polar coordinate, and showed that the tensor values were out of the anisotropy ellipsoid due to the high heterogeneity of BH-2 and BH-3 comparing with the other boreholes. Therefore. the anisotropy of the aquifer was examined from BH-1, BH-4. and BH-5. In BH-1, T(equation omitted) is 171.9 $\m^2$/day. $T_{ηη}$ is $71.01\m^2$/day, and the principal tensor direction is Nl5.39$^{\circ}$E. In BH-4. T(equation omitted) is $268.2 \m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$ / is $28.75\m^2$/day and the principal tensor direction is N7.55$^{\circ}$E. In BH-5, T(equation omitted) is $168.4\m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$ is 66.80 $\m^2$/day, and the principal tensor direction is $N76.59^{\circ}$E. On the basis of teleview logging performed on each borehole. the principal fracture directions were revealed as $N0^{\circ}$~4$^{\circ}$E/$30^{\circ}$~$50^{\circ}$SE and $N30^{\circ}$~$80^{\circ}$W/$20^{\circ}$~$50^{\circ}$NE that are the most frequently occurred sets as well as that correspond well with the calculated transmissivity tensor.
