  • It is a global challenge to fulfill the demand for clean water at an affordable cost to all the strata of the population. Desalination of seawater as well as brackish water by the membrane separation process is a well-established and cost-efficient method. However, there is still inherent problem of membrane fouling, disposal of the reject as well as a capital-intensive process. While electrodialysis (ED) is a membrane-based separation process in which a driving force is the potential difference. The advantages of ED process are excellent efficiency and low operation cost. Ion exchange membrane (IEM) used in the ED process needs to have higher chemical and thermal stability along with excellent mechanical strength for long-term use without losing its efficiency. The ion exchange capacity of the ED membrane is largely dependent on the conductivity of IEMs. In this review, the modification strategy of the pristine membrane to enhance the stability and ion conductivity of cation exchange membrane (CEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) is discussed.

  • At steady state, the simultaneous transport of sulphuric acid and nickel sulphate through an anion-exchange membrane Neosepta-AFN (Astom Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) was investigated in a two-compartment counter-current dialyzer with single passes. The transport was quantified by the recovery yield of acid, rejection of salt and four phenomenological coefficients, which were correlated with the acid and salt concentrations in the feed. The phenomenological coefficients were determined by the numerical integration of the basic differential equations describing the concentration profiles of the components in the dialyzer. This integration was combined with an optimizing procedure. The experiments proved that the acid recovery yield is in the limits from 63 to 91 %, while salt rejection is in the limits from 79 to 97 % in the dependence on the volumetric liquid flow rate and composition of the feed.

  • Performance evaluation of four commercially available tubular membranes (AFC 80, AFC 30, PU 608, ES 404) was accomplished in self-assembled membrane testing unit. Effects of varying transmembrane pressure, feed concentration and anion type were investigated. Aqueous solutions of salts such as calcium chloride, calcium sulfate, tin chloride and tin sulfate were prepared for this study. It was noted that the investigated parameters e.g., pressure and concentration had significant effects on membrane's performance. Nevertheless, anion type effectively played its role in the rejection of salts since salt having SO4-2 anions had a better rejection than the salts containing Cl-1. It is observed that rejection was dominated by Donnon exclusion for strongly charged nanofiltration membranes whereas for weakly charged ultrafiltration membranes, size exclusion was the key mechanism to reject the ions.

  • Recovery of sulfuric acid is very important after biomass converted to sugar by acid hydrolysis. In this work, the separation of sulfuric acid from sulfuric acid/glucose solution was studied by electrodiaysis. Three chamber method, which requires both anion membrane and cation membrane, is the most commonly used in the electrodialysis process, but two chamber method using only an anion membrane was the focus of this study. Sulfuric acid was perfectly separated from a mixture of 10~30 wt% glucose and 1~3 M sulfuric acid by electrodialysis using two chamber method. The separation rate of sulfuric acid lineary increased with higher current density when the affect of diffusion and convection of the membrane was small. Without electric energy, 45% of sulfuric acid was separated by diffusion and convection only.

  • In this study, we synthesized vinylbenzyl chloride-co-styrene-co hydroxyethyl acrylate (VBC-co-St-co-HEA) copolymer that can be applied to redox the flow battery process. The anion exchange membrane was prepared by the amination and crosslinking of VBC-co-St-co-HEA copolymer. The chemical structure and thermal properties of VBC-co-St-co-HEA copolymer and aminated VBC-co-St-co-HEA(AVSH) membrane were characterized by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, TGA, and GPC analysis. The membrane properties such as ion exchange capacity(IEC), electrical resistance, ion conductivity and efficiency of all-vanadium redox flow battery were measured. The IEC value, electrical resistance, and ion conductivity were 1.17 meq/g, $1.9{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, 0.009 S/cm, respectively. The charge-discharge efficiency, voltage efficiency and energy efficiency from all-vanadium redox flow battery test were 99.5, 72.6 and 72.1%, respectively.

  • As abnormal climatic event occur frequently due to global warming, many nations have proclaimed their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and are actively pursuing a transition toward a hydrogen economy. At this time, ammonia has garnered significant attention not only as a high-capacity hydrogen carrier but also as a promising candidate as a carbon-free fuel. In particular, anion exchange membrane fuel cells offer the advantage of directly supplying ammonia to the fuel cell, eliminating the necessity for separate ammonia decomposition or hydrogen purification. Therefore, in this study, the operation principle and research trend of the anion exchange membrane fuel cell are reviewed, and several research using ammonia as a fuel in anion exchange membrane fuel cell are also investigated.

  • Energy plays a significant role in modern lifestyle because of our extensive reliance over energy-operating devices. Therefore, there is a need for alternative and green energy resources that can fulfill the energy demand. For this, fuel cell (FCs) especially anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have gained tremendous attention over the other (FCs) due to their fast reaction kinetics without using noble catalyst and allow to use of cheaper polymers with high performance. But lack of highly conductive, chemically, and mechanically stable anion exchange membrane (AEM) still main obstacle to the development of high performance AEMFCs. Therefore, graphene-based polymer composite membranes came into the existence as AEMs for the FCs. The exceptional properties of the graphene help to improve the performance of AEMs. Still, there are lot of challenges in the graphene derivatives based AEMs because of their high tendency of agglomeration in polymer matrix which reduced their potential. To overcome this issue surface modification of graphene derivatives is necessary to restrict their agglomeration and conserved their potential features that can help to improve the performance of AEM. Therefore, this review focus on the surface modification of graphene derivatives and their role in the fabrication of AEMs for the FCs.

  • The potentiometric responses for various anions are investigated with membrane electrode (membrane 1) based on 1,3-diethyl-1,3-dihydroxy-1,3-bis(2-dimethylaminomethyl ferrocenyl) disiloxane. The nitrate ion-selective electrode based on compound 1 gave a good Nernstian response of 58.18 mV per decade for nitrate with the detection limit of −e5.66 of log [NO3−e]. Compound 1 has all those functional groups and the other two compounds have less functional group of ferrocenyl or ferrocenyl and hydroxide, respectively. Even though, potentiometric response to anions was excellent at pH 5, the selectivity pattern for all three membrane electrode based on series of disiloxane is almost like Hofmeister sequence at pH 5. However, the membrane electrode 1-3 exhibited very different response to anions at pH 7. In this pH, NH2 is not protonated and ionophore may act as neutral carrier. Hydrogen bond may enhance the responsibility to hydrogen acceptors and intramolecular electro-active site may increase the permeability of analyte to ionophore in membrane.
