Alveolar bone thickness and lower incisor position in skeletal Class I and Class II malocclusions assessed with cone-beam computed tomography

  • Objective: To evaluate lower incisor position and bony support between patients with Class II average- and high-angle malocclusions and compare with the patients presenting Class I malocclusions. Methods: CBCT records of 79 patients were divided into 2 groups according to sagittal jaw relationships: Class I and II. Each group was further divided into average- and high-angle subgroups. Six angular and 6 linear measurements were performed. Independent samples t-test, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn post-hoc tests were performed for statistical comparisons. Results: Labial alveolar bone thickness was significantly higher in Class I group compared to Class II group (p = 0.003). Lingual alveolar bone angle (p = 0.004), lower incisor protrusion (p = 0.007) and proclination (p = 0.046) were greatest in Class II average-angle patients. Spongious bone was thinner (p = 0.016) and root apex was closer to the labial cortex in high-angle subgroups when compared to the Class II average-angle subgroup (p = 0.004). Conclusions: Mandibular anterior bony support and lower incisor position were different between average- and high-angle Class II patients. Clinicians should be aware that the range of lower incisor movement in high-angle Class II patients is limited compared to average- angle Class II patients.

Determination of Adequate Entry Angle of Lumbar Sympathetic Ganglion Block in Korean

  • Background: The target of lumbar sympathetic ganglion block is the anterolateral surface of the L2, 3 and 4 vertebral bodies, where the lumbar sympathetic ganglion usually lies. In most cases, a block-needle is inserted approximately 5-8 cm lateral to spinous process on the skin and directed to the anterolateral surface of vertebral body obliquely. The purpose of this study is to determine the safe entry angle and entry point in Korean by using the abdominal CT scan images. Methods: The abdominal CT images of eighty five patients were recruited to this study. The minimal angle aimed at the lumbar sympathetic ganglion that can pass through the lateral aspect of body and maximal angle that avoids puncturing the kidney, ureter or retroperitoneal space were measured. The distance from midline to skin entry point was also measured. Results: There was no significant difference in entry angle among L2, 3, and 4 level. The entry angle was similar in the right and left side, and in males and females. The entry angle of old age group was significantly smaller than that of young age group. The calculated safe entry angle was $30.5{\pm}0.4^{\circ}$ and entry point was $7.7{\pm}0.2\;cm$ and $6.7{\pm}0.1\;cm$ lateral from midline in males and females respectively. Conclusions: These measurements can be used as a reference for lumbar sympathetic ganglion block and radiofrequency lesioning. Prior to performing the lumbar sympathetic ganglion block for cancer patients, the abdominal CT scan should be reviewed to prevent complications.

The Effect of Hard Insole on Metatarsophalangeal Joint in Patients With Hallux Valgus (무지 외반증 환자의 hard insole 착용에 의한 중족지절관절 각도의 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of donning of a hard insole in patients with hallux valgus. Fourteen subjects were selected from patient with foot pain at Lee Chang-Heon Foot Clinic from August 4, 2000 to September 15, 2000. The hallux valgus angle and the first-second intermetatarsal angle were radiographically measured before and after donning the hard insole. Based on these two kinds of angles, a mild hallux valgus deformity group was characterized by the hallux valgus angle of less than 20 degrees, and a moderate hallux valgus deformity group was characterized by the hallux valgus angle of 20 to 40 degrees. After three weeks with the hard insole donned, the foot angles of the patients with hallux valgus were measured again. The data were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed ranks test, and the following results were obtained: 1) After the trial, both mild hallux valgus deformity group and moderate hallux valgus deformity group demonstrated that the hallux valgus angles were significantly decreased. 2) After the trial, mild hallux valgus deformity group demonstrated that the first-second intermetatarsal angle was significantly decreased. 3) After the trial, moderate hallux valgus deformity group demonstrated that the first-second intermetatarsal angle was not significantly decreased. The above findings revealed that according to donning hard insole, the hallux valgus angles of mild and moderate hallux valgus deformity groups and the first-second intermetatarsal angle of mild hallux valgus deformity group were significantly decreased. The results of this study have some limitation for generalization due to the limited number of subjects. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effect of hard insole on hallux valgus with more precise laboratory equipments and measurements in patients with hallux valgus.

  • Pythagolas rule was used for investigation of static contact angle in particular figures. Static contact angle measurement was important to evaluate the wettability between solid and liquid. Optimum measurement method and standardization of calculation for static contact angle were investigated for practical application. Optimum diameter of droplet for static contact angle measurement was confirmed as 1 mm. Contact angle measurement using Pythagolas rule was also used to calculate advancing, receding angle and wettability of different surface condition. At last, it was concluded that the Pythagolas rule method was more accurate than general lineation method for static contact angle measurement.

  • In this work, the effect of attitude angle variation on drag coefficients of hemisphere in a Mach 6 flow has been investigated. Experiments were conducted in a shock tunnel and a free-falling technique was used to minimize flow disturbance by a sting. For attitude and drag coefficient measurements of a free-falling hemisphere, a free-falling technique based on a releasing mechanism with a stair-typed module and an electromagnet was developed. A shadowgraph technique was used for flow visualization using a high-speed camera.

  • The spray characteristics and drop size measurements have been experimentally studied in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. With water as fuel injection velocity, injection angle and atomize. internal flows were varied to provide of jet operation conditions. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a non-cavitation flow, cavitation, and hydraulic flip flows. Pulsed Shadowgraph Photography measurement was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in a subsonic crossflow of air. And this study also obtains the SMD (Sauter Mean Diameters) distribution by using Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence technique. The objectives of this research are get a droplet distributions and drop size measurements of each condition and compare with the other flow effects. As the result, This research has been showned that droplet size were spatially dependent on air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, injection angle effects, and normalized distance from the injector exit length(x/d, y/d). There are also different droplet size characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the non-cavitation flows.

  • This study deals with the development of the extended Kalman filter(EKF) algorithm for the localization of underwater mining vehicles. Both simulation and experimental studies in a test bed are carried out. For the experiments, a scale dawn tracked vehicle is run in a soil bin containing cohesive soil of bentonite-water mixture. To develop the EKF algorithm, we use a kinematic model including the inner/outer track slips and the slip angle for the vehicle. The measurements include the inner and outer wheel speeds from encoders, the heading angle from a compass sensor and a fiber optic rate gyro, and x and y coordinate position values from a vision system. The vision sensor replaces the LBL(Long Base Line) sonar system used in the real underwater positioning situations. Artificial noise signals mimicking the real LBL noise signal are added to the vision sensor information. To know the mean slip values of the tracks in both straight and cornering maneuver, several trial running experiments are executed before applying the EKF algorithm. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the EKF algorithm in rejecting the sensor measurements noise. Also, the simulation and experimental results show close correlations.

The Effect of Rectus Abdominis Functional Massage on Forward head posture and Pain in Patients with Chronic Neck Pain (복직근 기능적 마사지가 만성 목통증 환자의 머리전방자세와 통증에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of cervical deep muscle flexion exercise (CCFE) on craniovertebral angle, pain, and neck disability for patients with chronic neck pain Methods: The subjects of this study were randomly divided into three groups of 30 patients with chronic neck pain: rectus abodominis functional massage (n=10), cervical deep muscle flexion exercises group (n=10), and the control group(n=10). To assess visual analog scale (VAS) was used to test the neck pain, To assess neck posture was used to craniovertebral angle, VAS was used to test the neck pain, neck disability index (NDI) was used to test the neck dysfunction. All measurements were performed before and after each intervention was applied 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Results: In the results of all measurements, 2 groups except for the control group showed a significant change in the recovery of posture, neck pain, neck disability index (p<.05). Conclusions: Our results of this study showed that applying cervical deep muscle flexion exercise and rectus abodominis functional massage to patients with chronic neck pain improved cervical posture, neck pain, neck disability.

A Study on the Mass Transfer from a Square Cylinder Using Naphthalene Sublimation Technique (나프탈렌승화법을 이용한 사각관 주위에서의 물질전달에 관한 연구)

  • Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to investigate the mass transfer processes from a square cylinder at various Reynolds numbers and various angles of attack. Distribution of the local mass transfer coefficients on each face of the cylinder changes dramatically with the angle of attack. Such variation of local mass transfer rates closely connected with the complex flow phenomena such as stagnation, acceleration, separation, reattachment and vortex shedding. The average Sherwood number has a minimum value at 12.deg.-13.deg., and a maximum value at a=20.deg.-25.deg. A comparison of present mass transfer measurement with other heat transfer measurements, using the heat/mass transfer analogy, shows good agreement in average transfer rates, same trend but notable differences in local values. Therefore, naphthalene sublimation technique can be adopted to explore heat transfer processes in the complex flow situations, which is considered to be hardly possible with the conventional heat transfer measurements.

  • The purpose of this comparative research is to investigate the change of the drafting method of the basic patterns for women in Korea. Followings were the findings of this research: 1) The concept of the basic pattern could be found after the first of the 1950s and there was introduction of the many basic patterns. At first measurement couldn't be found. Gradually the personal body type could be expressed in the basic pattern through the practical measurements such as the width of highest bust level and the length of neck to bust. 2) Through the ages the changes of the basic patterns were between 1950,60s and 1980,90s distinctively at the back width back shoulder angle front and back shoulder height from biceps line back neck ratio(height/width) BP position at the biceps line the amounts of underarm dart underarm dart position from the biceps lines and front ease angle at BP line. 3) 4 Grouping the types of the basic pattern followings are their characters; 1st Munwha or Doreme style 2nd waist dart group 3rd underarm dart and rectangular front ease 4th the usage of many measurements like as front length upper bust girth etc.
