A functional external fixator system for bone deformity near the joints using worm gear was developed for curing the angle difference in fracture bones while the lengthening bar was developed for curing the differences in length, also in fracture bones. Both experiments and FE analysis were performed to compare the elastic stiffness in several loading modes and to improve the functional external fixator system for bone deformity near joints. The FE model using compressive and bending FE analysis was applied due to the angle differentiations. The results indicate that compressive stiffness value in the experiment was 175.43N/mm, bending stiffness value in the experiment was 259.74 N/mm, compressive stiffness value in the FEA was 188.67 N/mm, and bending stiffness value in the FEA was 285.71 N/mm. Errors between experiments and FEA were less than $10\%$ in both the 'compressive stiffness and the bending stiffness. The maximum stress (157 MPa) applied to the angle of the clamp was lower than the yield stress (176.4 MPa) of SUS316L. The degree of stiffness in both axial compression and bending of the new fixator are about 2 times greater than other products, with the exception of EBI (2003).
Study was developed the metallic plate for fixation in the femur fracture and plates has a firm place in fracture treatment. This plates can be stabilized for fracture fixation as well as biological and dynamical device. The device's designation and sizing has a optimization with bending structural stiffness and strength, known meaning that is reliable regardless of the plate by the short type and long type. The bending strength of the curved metallic long plate has to evaluate a 11,000N and the bending strength of the curved metallic short plate has to evaluate a 6,525N. This see the X-ray image of bending angle made certain of 15$^{\circ}$ at number 2 and same 82.87$^{\circ}$ at number 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 by outside angle, and confirmed 25.26$^{\circ}$ at number 3, 3.68$^{\circ}$ at number 6, 15.64$^{\circ}$ at number 9 by inside angle. This study shows that keep up the metallic plate for fixation in the femur fracture through X-ray Image and the device can be used to support Revision case of Hip Implant and to use a case of Hip screw compression of Hip Neck Fracture. Short plate have a wrapping of femur and long plate have to preserve a pole of femur.
Purpose: To evaluate the results of treatments by percutaneous Acutrak screw fixation for intra-articular tongue type fracture of calcaneus, especially in elderly patient or patients with underlying disease including diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: Seven cases with intra-articular tongue type fracture of calcaneus, from November 2003 to February 2005, were reviewed. There were 6 males and 1 female with 65 years old mean age (range: $61{\sim}71$ years old). The average follow-up period was 16 months (range: $10{\sim}25$ months). Two Steinmann pins were used for closed reduction. After closed reduction was done like Essex-Lopresti's method, two Acutrak screws were inserted. The third Acutrak screw was inserted at the sustentaculum tali away from sinus tarsi to fix the primary fracture line. The patients were evaluated with Salama scale, the extent of recovery of Bohler angle, state of subtalar joint. Results: Clinical results according Salama scale were excellent in 5 cases, and good in 2 cases. Average preoperative Bohler angle was $13^{\circ}$ (range: $12{\sim}15^{\circ}$). Average postoperative Bohler angle was 31o (range: $23^{\circ}-40^{\circ}$). There were no soft tissue complications. There were two mild subtalar arthritis. Conclusions: We think that percutaneous Acutrak screw fixation is a good option for tongue type fracture of calcaneus in elderly patient or patients with underlying disease including diabetes mellitus.
Geological structures such as fault and fracture patterns provide important information about preliminary exploration of mineralized areas and geological characterization. We apply a filtering method taking the sun's azimuth angle into account to a shaded relief image derived from a digital elevation model (DEM), by which even linear edges extending parallel to the sun direction can be effectively extracted. Then, Generalized Hough tranform is applied to extract lineanments which correspond to fault and fracture patterns.
The direction of the applied load and displacement rate on the femur during falls may be an important factors in the etiology of hip fractures. Nonetheless, previous studies did not consider these two factors simultaneously for falling condition. Therefore, in the present study, an impact test system is developed to simulate the falling condition and the influence of impact angle on the deformation pattern changes of proximal femur is investigated. The results showed that a slight variation in impact angle quite affects deformation pattern of the proximal femur. Along with bone mineral density and trabaecular morphology, the impact angle can be another important factor affecting the structural capacity of the proximal femur.

A Study on the Fracture Strength of All-Ceramic Crown according to the Zirconia Coping Design using CAD/CAM System L. Bulgan, In-Ho Cho, Soo-Yeon Shin Department of Prosthodontics, Graduate School, Dankook University The fracture strength of prosthesis is important, because it affects the function, and long term success of prosthesis and teeth. The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of zirconia coping designs. Experimental test group were classified into three designs according to coping design, Modified design: Zirconia coping margin was located at 1mm above the axiogingival line angle. Collarless design: The coping margin terminated at the axiogingival line angle Butt design: The coping margin was extended to the finishing line of prepared margin. A $Cercon^{(R)}$(Degussa, Germany) CAD/CAM system was used to make the zirconia coping. Fracture strength was measured using loading machine at a cross head speed of 1mm/min. The results were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison test. Statistical significance was set in advance at the probability level of less than 0.05. The result : I. Collarless($738N{\pm}155N$) and Modified($755N{\pm}185N$) groups showed significantly a lower fracture strength than Butt($1057N{\pm}262N$) group(p<0.05). II. There were no statistical differences of the fracture strength between Modified($755N{\pm}185N$) and Collarless($738N{\pm}155N$) groups. III. When comparing the fractured surface, all the group showed porcelain fracture, which were fractured at the labial surface of baked porcelain The butt design of the zirconia coping has higher fracture strength than modified and collarless design.
Applications of fracture mechanics in the strength analysis of ceramic materials have been lately studied by many researchers. Various test specimens have been proposed in order to investigate the fracture resistance of cracked bodies under mixed mode conditions. Double Cleavage Drilled Compression (DCDC) specimen, with a hole offset from the centerline is a configuration that is frequently used in subcritical crack growth studies of ceramics and glasses. This specimen exhibits a strong crack path stability that is due to the strongly negative T-stress term. In this paper the maximum tensile stress (MTS) criterion is employed for investigating theoretically the initiation of brittle fracture in the DCDC specimen under mixed mode conditions. It is shown that the T-stress has a significant influence on the predicted fracture load and the crack initiation angle. The theoretical results suggest that brittle fracture in the DCDC specimen is controlled by a combination of the singular stresses (characterized by KI and KII) and the non-singular stress term, T-stress.

Bite force is created by the force of adjacent teeth accompanied with tension of masticatory muscle. The bite force value is greater in male than in female and ha maximum value at first molar. Masseter muscle is associated with bite force and during muscle contraction the electric signal is expressed in EMG form. The aim of the study is to assess recovery time for masseter muscle activity and according to each part of bite force after open reduction with internal fixation when mandibular angle fracture and subcondyle fracture occurred. And to determine the appropriate period for mandibular fracture patients to have normal masticatory activity. 30 patients with normal bite condition was selected for control group and from April, 2007 to September, 2007, 20 patients who visited our department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of Dankook University, were selected for the study and were diagnosed as mandibular angle fracture and subcondyle fracture. For control group, the bite force for incisors, canine, premolars and molars and activity of the masseter muscle was measured and compared for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. That was divided as fracture side and normal side. Mann-Whitney U test was performed for significant difference and the following result was obtained. 1. The maximum voluntary bite force for incisors, canine, premolars and molars portion were 0.113 kN, 0.182kN, 0.295kN and 0.486kN and the masseter muscle activity was 0.192 volts in the control group. 2. The maximum bite force at fracture side was recovered by 4th weeks for incisors, 6th weeks for canine and premolars and 8th weeks for molars and the masseter muscle activity was recovered by 6th weeks in the experimental group. 2. The maximum bite force at normal side was recovered by 4th weeks for incisors, 6th weeks for canine, premolars and molars and the masseter muscle activity was recovered by 3rd weeks in the experimental group. 3. The method for internal fixation by 2.0mm miniplates at both superior and inferior border had no complications according for twenty patients and had a satisfactory recovery. According to the result, patient with mandibular angle fracture and subcondyle fracture, 8 weeks was required for bite force recovery. Therefore, patients with open reduction and internal fixation under general anesthesis, it can be assumed that 8 weeks was needed after operation in order to have normal bite force and masseter muscle recovery.

Dependence of dynamic fracture path on loading velocity was observed from experimental results based on the three point bending fracture in cast iron. In this study, 3D and 2D numerical simulations are used to evaluate singular stress fields near crack tip and fracture mechanics parameters. Moving finite element technique, 2D and 3D Delauney automatic mesh generation and contact-noncontact evaluation is introduced into the numerical method. Dynamic fracture thoughness is decreased with increase of impact loading velocity. Fracture mode-ratio corresponds to initial kink angle of fracture path. The numerical result shows that the maximum hoop stress criterion cannot be applied to dynamic fracture of cast iron.
This study was carried out to investigate the fracture behavior and the fracture criterion of yellow lauan(Shorea spp.), when has used for furniture and wood structures, and to offer a reliability for wood structure and basic data for wood fracture criterion in experiments which are fracture tested under mode I, mode II and mixed mode loading condition. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Fractures in specimens which have inclined grain in yellow lauan procedeed from crack tip in the radial direction along the grain. 2. In yellow lauan, $K_{IC}RL$ was 42.1kg/$cm^{3/2}$ and $K_{IIC}RL$ was 15.8kg/$cm^{3/2}$. 3. The fracture criteria of lauan were; ($K_I/K_{IC}$)+($K_{II}/K_{IIC}$)=1 in RL system with inclined grain at $45^{\circ}$, ($K_I/K_{IC}$)+$(K_{II}/K_{IIC})^2$=1 with inclined grain at $15^{\circ}$ and $(K_I/K_{IC})^2$+$(K_{II}/K_{IIC})^2$=1 with inclined grain at $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. 4. The fracture criterion of wood could vary with the species, and the load applying condition. In order to measure the fracture criterion strictly, along with standardization of specimen geometry a large amount of experimental data is needed. 5. $K_{IC}$(critical stress intensity factor) can be predicted by grain angle. As the grain inclined angle increased, $K_{IC}$ and $K_{IIC}$ are increased.
