  • We developed an electronic lens for acoustic imaging systems, which is linear array with 31 microphones equally spaced with distance 34mm. Resonant frequency fo receiver circuit coupled to microphone is 20 kHz. We arranged 16 microphones horizontally and 15 microphones vertically, so that the array allows us to obtain a 2 dimensional angle of source, and to track the motion of source in real time. Due to the problem of aliasing in discrete Fourier Transfrom, the maximum observable angle of the lens is limited to 15${\circ}$. We also employed quadrature phase detection scheme to adjust the focus. We have tested the acoustic lens with a personal computer in an anechoic room and obtained the results agreed with the acoustic imaging theory.

  • The paper describes the prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the aeroacoustic noise of an small axial fan. The prediction method is comprised of various CFD conditions and acoustic analogy by using Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The diameter of tested axial fan is 170 mm and number of blade is 5. Virtual anechoic room which has same size with real one was used for CFD. URANS and LES models were used. For mesh dependence study, a different mesh type was tested and optimized mesh was selected. Calculation conditions were also studied such as time step and turbulence model for accurate noise analysis. In this paper, we got optimum analysis conditions and computational results. The unsteady pressure fluctuation at given 4 points were compared between the measured data and computational results. Also, the predicted acoustic spectrum at 3 given microphone points were compared with measured ones.

  • The flow and noise characteristics of the regenerative blower are evaluated experimentally. To decrease the noise of regenerative blower at a high frequency, we arrange the impeller vanes unevenly by special formula. The uneven pitch formular consists of the combination of trigonometric function. The magnitude of degree between each vanes and the control parameters of trigonometric functions are main design parameters for the uneven pitch. The flow characteristics of even and uneven impellers are tested by the fan tester and compared each results. The efficiency of a blower is calculated by the axial power using a dynamo system. The noise property of designed impeller is measured in an anechoic room. In this study, we certify that the uneven pitch impeller is effective in the noise reduction at a high frequency.

  • It has been noted, in case of the apartments in collective form, the drainage noise from cleaning of toilet causes many problems in the basement and adjacent rooms, mainly hampering the pleasant housing environment. The problems are increasingly raised by civil complaints with the public offices. Therefore, if the drainage noise generates when wash out of toilet bowl is grasped how the characteristics change according to the sorts of drainpipe, it is considered that the establishment of an effective sound insulation countermeasure could be possible when a civil petition against the drainage noise of apartment house is submitted hereafter. On such viewpoint, this study measured and analyzed the characteristics of drainage noise per the type of drainage pipe, according to KS A ISO $1996-1{\sim}3$, with the horizontal branch pipe and riser pipes in the drainage noise experiment chamber which has the characteristics of the anechoic room. In the result, the pipe type with excellent noise reduction function. The result of this study is considered to become available as fundamental data, to take actions on reduction of drainage noise of the ceiling piping method.

  • Major noise source in high speed rotating optical disk drives (CD and DVD-ROM) arises due to the high-speed airflow produced from the upper and lower surfaces on the rotating disk. The present paper deals with the experimental approach how to identify the noise source based on the fundamental principles of aeroacoustics and to propose a reduction method of the noise source. The CD-ROM device is composed of disk, window tray, motors at the bottom place and electronic circuit plate also located below the window plate. The window is cut in the tray to read the disk information using the optical device located below the tray and moving linearly from the center of the disk through the end of the disk. All components are possible noise generators. Experimental studies were carried out in the anechoic room with various design modifications, such as tray geometry, window size and hole location on tray, to identify the major aerodynamic noise source and significant reductions of the aerodynamic noise were obtained.

  • The present study aims to investigate the design standard for acoustic criteria of Korean traditional music which could be used for the design of Korean traditional music halls. In order to do this, subjective listening tests were undertaken to musicians using auralized sounds which were convolved with the impulse response of traditional instruments recorded in an anechoic chamber. 94 pairs of sound were made which have different value of acoustic parameters including RT, BR, Brilliance, G, C80, ITDG, IACC. A paired comparison method(PCM) was used to analyze the results from the subjective listening tests. The results show that the preference of acoustic criteria for the Korean traditional music is far different from those of western music. As a result, specific range of acoustic criteria were suggested for the appropriate acoustic conditions of Korean traditional music. Also, a guideline of the acoustic design of halls for performing the Korean traditional music was suggested which could be used as a basic reference in the future works.

  • The window ventilation system based on the heat recovery device was developed which make air ventilation possible without opening the windows. However, mechanical and aerodynamic noises were come to pass which annoyed people in rooms. In the present study, noise of new window ventilation system was measured in both general room and anechoic chamber. Also, the noise path was detected to find cause of noise generation and vulnerable area of the device. Sound absorptive and insulation materials were applied to mitigate the noise. Finally, an alternative noise control method was suggested which can satisfy with the indoor noise standards. As a result, it was shown that the cause of noise was the low transmission loss in the ventilation system. As a result, it was shown that the main noise source of the ventilation system was the blower and the major cause of noise was the low transmission loss of the ventilation system. It is also concluded that the noise levels complies with the noise standards of 40 dBA when 2 mm rubber sheet is applied inside the ventilation system.

  • In this work, a new type speaker which features various resonant frequencies is proposed utilizing a magneto-rheological (MR) fluid and its performance is evaluated in terms of the change of the field-dependent sound pressure level. In order to achieve this goal, a whole concept of the speaker system is firstly discussed and subsequently a controllable diaphragm is made using MR fluid whose rheological properties such as viscosity are controllable by the magnitude of magnetic field. Then, the proposed speaker system consisting of the inner structure and the squeeze mode type of MR diaphragm is established in an anechoic room The effectiveness of the proposed speaker system is experimentally evaluated at two different conditions; with and without the magnetic field. It is shown from experimental tests that the sound pressure level at different sound source can be controlled which is not able to achieve using one conventional speaker system.

  • It is necessary to study on acoustic and vibratory response of a MEMS resonant accelerometer before applying to military applications. In this paper, we analyze why the resonant accelerometer reacts to an acoustic wave and a high frequency vibration. And we describe experimental results on acoustic and vibratory response of the accelerometer. The accelerometer consists of a proof mass and a dual ended tuning fork. It is a differential resonant accelerometer with arranging a pair of accelerometers. The mode shape was analyzed to find out the input mode frequency by using a FEM simulation. Some experiments regarding the acoustic noise was carried out by using a tweeter and a microphone in the anechoic room. Results showed that the accelerometer reacted to the acoustic wave and vibration which had the input mode frequency as we had expected. We showed experimentally not only that the susceptibility of the accelerometer to an acoustic wave was 70 dB but also that the effectiveness of applying an acoustic absorber and a metal case was 20 dB, respectively. Also, we could minimize the vibratory response property of the accelerometer by installing a IMU with a silicone rubber mount pad.

  • The characteristics of noise generation in the suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner are analyzed numerically and experimentally. First, the flow resistance induced by each element in the suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner with a double-blade rotary fan is investigated numerically and its relation with flow-induced noise and suction performance is examined in an anechoic room. The flow resistance and vorticity in the suction nozzle are calculated, and it is found that they are closely related to flow-induced noise and that the upper limit of noise reduction is only 4 dBA. This upper limit can be achieved by changing the design of the brush nozzle. Two methods for noise reduction by enlargement of flow-inlet area and by optimization of the number of blades are tested. Finally, the effects of each method are verified experimentally.
