  • Taking advantage of the probability function, we have analyzed the localization phenomenon of the solution of a propagating function under the condition that the propagation constants are randomly distributed. For example, we have investigated the localization phenomenon of the voltage wave for a transmission line in which the characteristic impedance is randomly distributed. We have confirmed that the localized solution is in existence on the random lossless transmission line. Even in the case that the voltage wave is impulsively excited by the current source, the voltage wave is localized. Because the light wave is seriously affected at the localized position in the lossy transmission line, we have determined that the light wave localization phenomena are generated by multi-reflection.

  • We try to analyse the localization phenomenon of a lightwave in random media by means of considering the solution of the propagation equation on a transmission line in which the propagation constants are randomly distributed. Lightwave localization is generated at the turning point where the solution is changed suddenly from an increase to a decrease. First, in order to investigate the changing process of the solution, we have derived the approximated one-dimensional Schrodinger equation from the two-dimensional wave equation by using the Brags condition. Considering the many types of solutions of the wave equation, we have investigated the conditions that allow the solutions to exist. Also, we have investigated the relationships between the localization of the solution and the variation of the propagation constant. In case of the exponential solution, we know that the permittivity $\varepsilon$=(0,0$\varepsilon$$_{0}$) is a very important parameter to influence the phase of the lightwave and to generate the localization.

  • It is proved that $k[X_1,{\ldots},X_v ]$ localized at the ideal ($X_1,{\ldots},X_v$ ), where k is a field and $X_1,{\ldots},X_v$ indeterminates, is not weakly quasi-complete for $v{\geq}2$, thus proving a conjecture of D. D. Anderson and solving a problem from "Open Problems in Commutative Ring Theory" by Cahen, Fontana, Frisch, and Glaz.

  • We report on the metal-insulator transition that occurs as a function of film thickness in ultrathin $La_{0.75}Sr_{0.25}VO_3$ films. The metal-insulator transition displays a critical thickness of 5 unit cell. Above the critical thickness, metallic films exhibit a temperature driven metal-insulator transition with weak localization behavior. With decreasing film thickness, oxygen octahedron rotation in the films increases, causing enhanced electron-electron correlation. The electron-electron correlations in ultrathin films induce the transition from metal to insulator in addition to Anderson localization.

  • Recently, Anderson and Dumitrescu's S-finiteness has attracted the interest of several authors. In this paper, we introduce the notions of S-finitely presented modules and then of S-coherent rings which are S-versions of finitely presented modules and coherent rings, respectively. Among other results, we give an S-version of the classical Chase's characterization of coherent rings. We end the paper with a brief discussion on other S-versions of finitely presented modules and coherent rings. We prove that these last S-versions can be characterized in terms of localization.

  • The $(Sr_{0.75},\;La_{0.25})TiO_3$ (SLTO) ultra-thin films with various thicknesses have been grown on Ti-O terminated $SrTiO_3$(100) substrate using Laser-Molecular Beam Epitaxy (Laser MBE). By monitoring the in-situ specular spot intensity oscillation of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), we controlled the layer-by-layer film growth. The film structure and topography were verified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high resolution thin film x-ray diffraction by the synchrotron x-ray radiation. We have also investigated the electronic band structure using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The ultra thin SLTO film exhibits thickness driven metal-insulator transition around 8 unit cell thickness when the film thickness progressively reduced to 2 unit cell. The SLTO thin films with an insulating character showed band splitting in Ti $L_3-L_2$ edge XAS spectrum which is attributed to Ti 3d band splitting. This narrow d band splitting could drive the metal-insulator transition along with Anderson Localization. In optical conductivity, we have found the spectral weight transfer from coherent part to incoherent part when the film thickness was reduced. This result indicates the possibility of enhanced electron correlation in ultra thin films.

  • A complete solid solution (SrLaAl1-xNixO4) between insulating SrLaAlO4 and metallic SrLaNi(Ⅲ)O4 oxides were prepared under high oxygen pressure (1.5 kbar, 800 ℃). They have tetragonal K2NiF4-type structure in all the solid solution range. Compared with lattice parameters of the same solid solution prepared under normal condition (1 bar, 1200 ℃), large decrease in the c-parameter was induced by high pressure treatment while no noticeable variation of the a-parameter was observed. Although marked changes of structural parameters, magnetic susceptibilities, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra were consistently occurred before and after x=0.5, overall behaviors were essentially the same with those of solid solution prepared under normal condition. Such a phenomenon is explained by assuming the formation of partially filled narrow σ*x2-y2 band for x>0.5. Lattice contraction along the c-axis by high pressure treatment seems not to broaden this band. Particularly, the continuous absorption characteristic of a high free carrier concentration for x>0.5 and the absence of Ni-O in-plane stretching mode in the infrared absorption spectra supports this picture. However, the conductivities increasing with temperature for all solid solution suggest that some localization character, of probably Anderson type, remains for x>0.5.

  • Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures at the ends of chromosomes consisting of tandem repeat sequences of . (TTAGGG)n. Telomeres serve as guardians of the genome, protect individual chromosomes within the nucleus, and help in meiotic pairing of homologous chromosomes. To investigate the telomere distributions of cattle and pig chromosomes, fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) was carried out on metaphase spreads of in vitro fibroblast cultures from Holstein and Landrace using a human telomeric DNA repeat probe. Results indicate that the distinct double spots on both ends of chromosomes of cattle and pigs were observed. In cattle, there was a random variation in the intensity of telomere signals among chromosomes. In pigs, an interstitial telomeric signal was observed on the chromosome 6q1 of all the cells examined. According to quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization(Q-FISH) analysis, some chromosomes had consistently much more telorneres at one end of chromosomes. In general, both species had consistently much more telomeres at q-end than p-end on most of chromosomes. The relative amount of telomeres on bovine chromosomes was higher than that on pig chromosomes. In additions, Y chromosome had the highest relative amount of telorneres in cattle and pigs.
