This study using a method different from those employed previously, the anatomical characteristics of paper-mulberry wood were confirmed by observing three different sections. In addition, the factors affecting the pulp and papermaking processes were analyzed in terms of morphological properties such as the fiber length and width, lumen width, and chemical composition of the paper-mulberry bast fiber. The anatomical characteristics of the paper-mulberry wood were a ring porous or semi-ring porous structure with the vessels showing solitary pore and radial array. The medullary ray of the tangential section showed 1-3 rows and common helical thickening. Consequently, the paper-mulberry wood has the same anatomical characteristics throughout. The morphological characteristics of the paper-mulberry bast fiber are a fiber length of 6.58 to 9.01 mm, fiber width of 15.85 to $27.80{\mu}m$, lumen width of 4.50 to $12.54{\mu}m$. The D sample of Gangwon was the most suitable for the pulp and papermaking processes, in terms of its derived morphological ratios. Comparing the chemical compositions, the C sample of Gyeongsang had a high holocellulose content (90%). Thus, the findings herein will aid in determining the quality of Korean paper post production.
Crude drug 'SanJagYag' has been used mainly as a pleurisy, abdominal pain, female disease and gastropathy. To clarify the botanical origin of SanJagYag from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Paeonia japonica, Paeonia lactiflora and Paeonia obovata of Paeoniaceae were studied. As a result, it was clarified that SanJagYag was the root of Paeonia obovata.
Chinese crude drug 'Kang Whal' has been used mainly as a headache in common cold, rheumatic arthralgia and aching of the back and shoulder. To clarify the botanical origin of Kang Whal from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Ostericum koreanum Maxim. and Notopterygium incisium Ting ex H.T.Chang were studied. As a result, it was clarified that Kang Whal from Korea was the underground part of Ostericum koreanum.
Platycodon grandiflorum (Campanulaceae) is listed in Shin-Nong-Bon-Cho-Kyung (神農本草經) as the remedy for ventilation the lung, resolving phlegm, promoting pus discharge and subduing carbuncles. The prescriptions of Gil-Gyung-Tang (桔梗湯) are also recorded in many other Chinese medicinal books. The identification of the cultivation year of P. grandiflorum is very important in commercial market as well as in research field. However, any reports about it have not been clearly established yet. To clarify the criterion, the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the roots of P. grandiflorum cultivated in Korea for various years were studied. The characteristics of the cork layer, latex tube, and vessels were shown to be useful keys to confirm the cultivation year of P. grandiflorm. As a result, it was clarified that Kilkyung from Korea was the two years root of Platycodon grandiflorm.
Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (Araliaceae) is listed in Shen Nung Pentsao Ching(神農本草經) as the remedy for replenishing the primodial qi(氣), restoring pulse, treating collapse, tonifing the spleen and lag, promoting the production of body fluid to quench thirst, tranquilizing the mind, and improving the function of brain. The prescriptions of In Sam Tang(人參揚) are also recorded in many other Chinese medical books. The identification of the age of Panax ginseng is very important in commercial market as well as in research field. However, any reports about it have not been clearly established yet. To clarify the criterion, the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the roots of various age Panax ginseng cultivated in Korea were studied. The characteristics of cork layer, secretory canal, and vessel were shown to bε useful keys to confirm the age of Panax ginseng.
The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of Quercus mongolica infested by oak wilt disease. To analysis the anatomical characteristics of the wood specimens infested by the oak wilt, the anatomical structures of an infected wood, a dead wood, and sound wood were observed at 10-year-old intervals from 10 to 50 annual rings using both an optical and a scanning electron microscope. The fiber length was measured in units of 5 annual rings from the pith, and the diameter of the vessel element and the ratio of the vessel including the tyloses were measured for each 10 annual ring. In the cross section, on the infected and dead wood specimens, mycelium was also observed with the tyloses in the vessel. There was no signification difference between the wood specimens in the fiber length and the vessel diameter of the vessel element. The fiber length was not difference after 20-30 annual rings which is a part of juvenile wood. The average of the vessel ratio including tyloses in the infected wood was the highest. Especially, the ratio of tyloses was the highest 40-50 annual rings in the infected wood and the dead wood. Therefore, the large difference between the infested wood by oak wilt and the sound wood was the ratio of tyloses. This result can be used as a basic data to utilize the infested wood.
This study was fulfilled to investigate the anatomical characteristics according to provinces. In order to compare anatomical characteristics between provinces we selected Goseong, Hongcheon, and Bonghwa as experimental sites. To use the tree rings formed at the same years we dated all tree rings by cross-dating method used in dendrochronology and the cutting years were successfully dated in 2014, 2012, and 2014 for woods from Goseong, Hongchen, and Bonghwa, respectively. Based on the cutting years tracheid lengths and widths were measured considering juvenile wood (tree rings between the pith and first 10 years), heartwood (tree rings formed between 1955 and 1964), and sapwood (tree rings formed between 2002 and 2011). According to the results about differences between tracheid lengths from three provinces, juvenile wood did not show a difference, statistically, but heartwood and sapwood showed differences as the tracheid lengths following Bonghwa, Hongcheon, and Goseong. Bongwha also showed the largest value in the trachied width among three provinces. The tracheid lengths in the radial direction increased up to around the first 20 years, and then they showed stabilized. All wood samples showed typical Korean red pine's characteristics in anatomical observation under a light microscope.
The anatomical characteristics of rhizome, lateral root, stem, leaf, petiole, ovary and leaf epidermis about Atractylodes japonica Koidz. ex Kitam. and A. macrocephala Koidz. were investigated to estimate these taxonomic values. The cross sections of stem and ovary were very similar to two species, therefore these characters were not useful for delimitation of two species, but the size and distribution numbers per 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$of oil cavites in rhizome, the shape of leaf and petiole in cross section, the size of leaf epidermal cell and distribution numbers per 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$of stomata were differ from two species, therefore these were thought to be useful characters for delimitation of two species.
Ultrastructural and anatomical features of the leaf were studied in Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer(ginseng). The ginseng leaf poorly developed palisade tissue and the size of mesophyll cell was larger and the chloroplast density was lower than that of Glycine max (soyben). Ginseng chloroplast was filled with highly stacked grana and condensely-arrayed thylakoid, so the stroma space was hardly absorbed. However, ginseng mesophyll tissue and chloroplast array did not reduce light energy entering the mesophyll chloroplast, and the high LHCP/CP ratio of ginseng thylakoid resulted in the absorption of excess photon. It is reasonable to assume that 1O1-photogenearation by excess light energy partially resulted from the anatomical and ultrastructural characteristics of the ginseng leaf.
The anatomical and physical properties of tension wood (TW), opposite wood (OW) and lateral wood (LW) in the branches of Korean paulownia (Paulownia coreana) were compared. The diameter of TW vessels was larger than that of OW and LW vessels. The most distinctive feature of TW fibers was the presence of a gelatinous layer (G-fiber). The cell wall of TW fibers was nearly three times as thick as that of OW and LW. TW differed from OW and LW in density, X-ray diffraction pattern and shear and compressive strengths. The results obtained in this study showed clear differences in the anatomical and physical properties of TW, OW and LW of Paulownia coreana branch woods.
