  • This paper derives an improved analytical model to estimate switching loss and analyze the effects of parasitic elements on the switching performance of SiC MOSFETs. The proposed analytical model considers the parasitic inductances, the nonlinearity of the junction capacitances and the nonlinearity of the trans-conductance. The turn-on process and the turn-off process are illustrated in detail, and equivalent circuits are derived and solved for each switching transition. The proposed analytical model is more accurate and matches better with experimental results than other analytical models. Note that switching losses calculated based on experiments are imprecise, because the energy of the junction capacitances is not properly disposed. Finally, the proposed analytical model is utilized to account for the effects of parasitic elements on the switching performance of a SiC MOSFET, and the circuit design rules for high frequency circuits are given.

  • This paper presents an improved iron loss model, for the computation of the no load iron loss in the stator core of the in-wheel permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), for the cases of with and without stator skew. 2-D analytical model is used for the computation of tooth and yoke flux densities of the in-wheel PMSM. The no load iron loss computed by the improved iron loss model, for the cases of with and without skew is compared with the finite element method (FEM) and the results show good consistency.

  • The winding loss analysis of a flyback transformer is difficult and ambiguous because the primary side current and the secondary side current differs both in shape and phase, especially for DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) operation. Meanwhile, the fringing field caused by the air gaps further makes the traditional 1-D loss analysis model not directly applicable. The paper gives a thorough investigation into the phase shift of winding currents, which indicates that the phase shift of the high order harmonics is still close to $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase. Based on the analysis, a simplified 2-D winding loss analytical model for flyback transformers considering the effects of low order harmonics is proposed. By neglecting the y components of the fringing field, the proposed model has an acceptable accuracy and a simple form that is similar to the conventional 1-D model. The power loss calculated with the proposed analysis model is verified by FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulations and experimental results.

  • Purpose: The main theme of this study is to derive a specific quality loss function with multiple characteristics according to the same analytical structure as the single characteristic quality loss function of Taguchi. In other words, it presents an analytical framework for measuring quality costs that can be controlled in practice. Methods: This study followed the analytical methodology through geometric, linear algebraic, and statistical approaches Results: The function suggested by this study is as follows; $$L(x_1,x_2,{\cdots},x_t)={\sum\limits_{i=1}^{t}}k_i\{x_i+{\sum\limits_{j=1}^{t}}\({\rho}_{ij}{\frac{d_i}{d_j}}\)x_j\}x_i$$ Conclusion: This paper derived the quality loss function with multiple quality characteristics to expand the usefulness of the Taguchi quality loss function. The function derived in this paper would be more meaningful to estimate quality costs under the practical situation and general structure with multiple quality characteristics than the function by linear algebraic approach in response surface analysis.

  • An analytical model for the lateral vibration of beams with a bonded lap joint and partial layered dampers has been proposed in this paper. Both shear and normal forces acting along the interface between the elastic and viscoelastic layers were considered in the vibration analysis. Analytical results were compared with those obtained by a finite element method. Effects of the size and location of layers in partial dampers on system loss factor($\eta_s$) and resonant frequency($\omega_r$) were studied. which showed that partial dampers adhered to the site exhibiting the maximum amplitude of vibration were most influential in the increase of $\eta_s$ and the decrease of $\omega_r$. Specific system loss factor( $\eta_s$ divided by total mass of system) was also evaluated in the analysis.

  • This paper deals with eddy current loss of magnetic coupling with radial permanent magnet (PM) using analytical method such as a space harmonic method. Superposition of two kinds analysis model is used to analyze eddy current loss induced in inner PM and outer PM of magnetic coupling. When the eddy current is induced, the environmental temperature increases, and the permanent magnet(PM) characteristics are degraded because the performance of PM is greatly influenced by temperature rise. Hence, the calculation of eddy current loss becomes an important factor in the magnetic coupling. In order to analyze eddy current loss, first, on the basis of the magnetic vector potential and two-dimensional(2-D) polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field solutions of the radial magnetized PM are obtained. And we obtain the analytical solutions for the eddy current density produced by permanent magnet. Lastly, analytical solutions for eddy current loss are derived by using equivalent, electrical resistance calculated from magnet volume and analytical solution for eddy current density. This analytical results are validated by comparing with the 2-D finite element analysis (FEA).

  • This paper investigates analytical models of Conduction and Switching Losses (CASLs) of a matrix-Z-source converter (MZC). Two analytical models of the CASLs are obtained through the examination of operating principles for a Z-source inverter and ac-dc matrix converter respectively. Based on the two models, the analytical model of CASLs for a MZC is constructed and visualized over a range of exemplified operating- points, each of which is defined by the combination of power factor (pt) and modulation index (M). The model provides a measurable way to approximate the total losses of the MZC.

  • For the safety of prestressed structures such as cable-stayed bridges and prestressed concrete bridges, it is very important to ensure the prestress force of cable or tendon. The loss of prestress force could significantly reduce load carrying capacity of the structure and even result in structural collapse. The objective of this study is to present a smart PZT-interface for wireless impedance-based prestress-loss monitoring in tendon-anchorage connection. Firstly, a smart PZT-interface is newly designed for sensitively monitoring of electro-mechanical impedance changes in tendon-anchorage subsystem. To analyze the effect of prestress force, an analytical model of tendon-anchorage is described regarding to the relationship between prestress force and structural parameters of the anchorage contact region. Based on the analytical model, an impedance-based method for monitoring of prestress-loss is conducted using the impedance-sensitive PZT-interface. Secondly, wireless impedance sensor node working on Imote2 platforms, which is interacted with the smart PZT-interface, is outlined. Finally, experiment on a lab-scale tendon-anchorage of a prestressed concrete girder is conducted to evaluate the performance of the smart PZT-interface along with the wireless impedance sensor node on prestress-loss detection. Frequency shift and cross correlation deviation of impedance signature are utilized to estimate impedance variation due to prestress-loss.

  • The finite element model for automotive muffler analysis is improved by modifying the boundary condition of outlet and the mesh of finite element model. The model minimizes the difference between transmission loss from analysis and that from experiment. Four different boundary conditions and the four types of finite element model are tested to find out the best one of those. From the case study it is verified that the bevel of transmission loss can be changed by the variation of radiation impedance value. Also the resonance or anti-resonance frequencies of transmission loss can be shifted by the variation of finite element mesh. An improved finite element model of muffler is proposed in consideration with the accuracy and the computing time of analysis.

  • Comparison of the heat conduction into a trapezoidal fin and the heat loss from the fin by convection is made in this study Also, the ratio of heat loss from each surface to the total heat loss and the temperature distribution are analyzed using a 3-D analytical method. A trapezoidal fin whose tip height is half the root height is chosen as the model. The results show that the heat transfer rates from the tip and from both sides are comparable with each other as the non-dimensional width and length vary while the heat transfer rate from the bottom and top is dominant.
