Most of the existing evaluation criteria of vibration serviceability rely on the peak acceleration of the structure rather than that of the people keeping their own body unmoved on the structure who is the real receiver of structural vibrations. In order to accurately assess the vibration serviceability, therefore, a full path assessment approach of vibration serviceability based on vibration source, path and receiver is not only tentatively proposed in this paper, taking the peak acceleration of receiver into account, but also introduce a probability procedure to provide more instructive information instead of a single value. In fact, semi-rigid supported on both sides of the structure is more consistent with the actual situation than simply supported or clamped due to the application of the prefabricated footbridge structures. So, the footbridge is regarded as a beam with semi-rigid supported on both sides in this paper. The differential quadrature-integral quadrature coupled method is not only to handle different type of boundary conditions, but also after being further modified via the introduction of an approximation procedure in this work, the time-varying system problem caused by human-structure interaction can be solved well. The analytical results of numerical simulations demonstrate that the modified differential quadrature-integral quadrature coupled method has higher reliability and accuracy compared with the mode superposition method. What's more, both of the two different passive control measures, the tuned mass damper and semi-rigid supported, have good performance for reducing vibrations. Most importantly, semi-rigid supported is easier to achieve the objective of reducing vibration compared with tuned mass damper in design stage of structure.

In this paper, a method for analyzing the damping performance of stay cables incorporating magnetorheological (MR) dampers in the passive control mode is developed taking into account the cable sag and inclination, the damper coefficient, stiffness and mass, and the stiffness of damper support. Both numerical and asymptotic solutions are obtained from complex modal analysis. With the asymptotic solution, analytical formulas that evaluate the equivalent damping ratio of the sagged cable-damper system in consideration of all the above parameters are derived. The main thrust of the present study is to develop an general design formula and a universal curve for the optimal design of MR dampers for adjustable passive control of sagged cables. Two sag-affecting coefficients are derived to reflect the effects of cable sag on the maximum attainable damping ratio and the optimal damper coefficient. For the cable configurations commonly used in cable-stayed bridges, the sag-affecting coefficients are directly expressed in terms of the sag-extensibility parameter to facilitate the control design. A case study on adjustable passive vibration control of the longest cable (536 m) on Stonecutters Bridge is carried out to demonstrate the influence of the sag for the damper design, and to figure out the necessity of adjustability of damper coefficients for achieving maximum damping ratio for different vibration modes.

The finite element model updating can be defined as the problem of finding the parameters of the finite element model which gives the closest response to the actual response of the structure by measurement. In the previous researches, optimization based methods have been developed to minimize the error of the response of the actual structure and the analytical model. In this study, we propose an inverse eigenvalue problem that can directly obtain the parameters of the finite element model from the target mode information. Deep Neural Networks are constructed to solve the inverse eigenvalue problem quickly and accurately. As an application example of the developed method, the dynamic finite element model update of a suspension bridge is presented in which the deep neural network simulating the inverse eigenvalue function is utilized. The analysis results show that the proposed method can find the finite element model parameters corresponding to the target modes with very high accuracy.
This research focused on analyzing the post-fire behavior of high-performance concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, with the concrete containing tire rubber and steel fibers, under axial compressive loading. The finite element (FE) modeling of such heated columns containing recycled aggregate is a branch of this field which has not received the proper attention of researchers. Better understanding the post-fire behavior of these columns by measuring their residual strength and deformation is critical for achieving the minimum repair level required for structures damaged in the fire. Therefore, to develop this model, 19 groups of confined and unconfined specimens with the variables including the volume ratio of steel fibers, tire rubber content, diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratio of the steel tube, and exposure temperature were considered. The ABAQUS software was employed to model the tested specimens so that the accurate behavior of the FE-modeled specimens could be examined under test conditions. To achieve desirable results for the modeling of the specimens, in addition to the novel procedure described in this research, the modified versions of models presented by previous researchers were also utilized. After the completion of modeling, the load-axial strain and load-lateral strain relationships, ultimate strength, and failure mode of the modeled CFST specimens were evaluated against the test data, through which the satisfactory accuracy of this modeling procedure was established. Afterward, using a parametric study, the effect of factors such as the concrete core strength at different temperatures and the D/t ratio on the behavior of the CFST columns was explored. Finally, the compressive strength values obtained from the FE model were compared with the corresponding values predicted by various codes, the results of which indicated that most codes were conservative in terms of these predictions.

In this paper, an analytical model is proposed for assessing the natural frequency of barrettes subjected to vertical loading. The differential equation governing the free vibration of rectangular friction piles embedded in inhomogeneous soil is derived. The governing equation is numerically integrated by Runge-Kutta technique and the eigenvalue of natural frequency is computed by Regula-Falsi method. The numerical solutions for the natural frequency of barrettes compare well with those obtained from finite element analysis. Illustrated examples show that the natural frequencies increase with an increase of the cross-sectional aspect ratio, the friction resistance ratio and the soil stiffness ratio, and decrease with an increase of the friction aspect ratio, the slenderness ratio and the load factor, respectively.

In this paper, we proposed a numerical model based on moment-curvature, to evaluate the resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) members subjected to blast loading. To consider the direct shear failure mode, we introduced a dimensionless spring element based on the empirical direct shear stress-slip relation. Based on the dynamic increase factor equations for materials, new dynamic increase factor equations were constructed in terms of the curvature rate for the section which could be directly applied to the moment-curvature relation. Additionally, equivalent bending stiffness was introduced in the plastic hinge region to consider the effect of bond-slip. To verify the validity of the proposed model, a comparative study was conducted against the experimental results, and the superiority of this numerical model was confirmed through comparison with the analytical results of the single-degree of freedom model. Pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams were produced to evaluate the resistance of members against bending failure and direct shear failure, and additional parametric studies were conducted.
This technical report briefly introduced the rock cutting splitting method under development. This method is a method of excavating the rock by splitting the block after the rock cutting process. After designing the cutting geometry of the rock face, the chisel is press-fitted to remove the rock block. At this time, when the cutting block is properly designed, the tensile crack propagates smoothly at the bottom of the rock block. An analytical solution was devised to estimate the indentation force required for splitting rock blocks using fracture toughness mode 1 required for tensile crack growth. The impact force of the hydraulic breaker of the excavator was analyzed, and the grade of the excavator that can be constructed according to the rock block design geometry was analyzed.

An analytical model based on a modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) is developed to investigate the optical transmission through metal gratings. This model gives well physical meanings for the transmission as well as for the dispersion relations of the modes responsible for high transmission. These concepts provide accurate information even for real metals used in the visible~near-infrared wavelength range, where surface plasmon polaritons (SPP's) are excited. Furthermore, the dispersion relations allow the nature of the propagation modes to be assessed. The propagation modes are hybrid between Fabry-Pérot like modes and SPP's. It is important to consider different period and aspect ratio of metal gratings in order to determine the nature of the hybrid modes. In this paper, the sensing characteristics and mode propagation phenomena of high-performance plasma bio-sensors that depend on these variables were clearly analyzed.

This study investigated the structural performance of wire-integrated steel decks with varied lattice end support conditions through finite element analysis. The results indicated that the steel decks with the lattice foots positioned above the supporting structural member have the higher system stiffness compared to the cases with the lattice foots shifted away from the support. It is also observed that the contribution of the end vertical bars on both the system stiffness and the strength is negligible when the lattice foots are located on the support. It is, especially, revealed that the end vertical bars can be eliminated when the lattice foot length is not smaller than 40mm. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the system is not significantly affected by the lattice end support condition. The failure mode of the system is the top bar buckling at the center of the deck plate, the lattice end buckling, and the combination of both depending of design intention.

Tunnels may undergo a larger or a smaller response compared with the free-field soil. In the pseudo-static procedure, the response of the tunnel is most often characterized by a curve that relates the racking ratio (R) with the flexibility ratio (F), where R represents the ratio of the tunnel response with respect to the free-field vibration and F is the relative stiffness of the tunnel and the surrounding soil. A set of analytical and empirical curves that do not account for the depth and the aspect ratio of the tunnel are typically used in practice. In this study, a series of dynamic analyses are conducted to develop a set of F-Rm relations for use in a frame analysis method. Rm is defined as an adjusted R where the rocking mode of deformation is removed and only the racking deformation is extracted. The numerical model is validated against centrifuge test recordings. The influence of aspect ratio, buried depth of tunnel on results is investigated. The results show that Rm increases with the increase of the buried depth and the aspect ratio. The widely used F-R relations are highlighted to be different compared with the obtained results in this study. Therefore, the updated F-Rm relations with proposed equations are recommended to be used in practice design. The rocking response decreases with either the decrease of the difference of stiffness between surrounding soil and tunnel or the larger aspect ratio of the tunnel section.
