  • Steel nitriding is a thermo-chemical process leading to surface hardening and improvement in fatigue properties. The process is strongly influenced by many different variables such as steel composition, nitrogen potential, temperature, time, and quenching media. In the present study, the influence of such parameters affecting physic-chemical and mechanical properties of nitride steels was evaluated. The aim was to streamline the process by numerical-experimental analysis allowing defining the optimal conditions for the success of the process. Input parameters-output results correlations were calculated through the employment of a multi-objective optimization software, modeFRONTIER (Esteco). The mechanical and microstructural results belonging to the nitriding process, performed with different processing conditions for various steels, are presented. The data were employed to obtain the analytical equations describing nitriding behavior as a function of nitriding parameters and steel composition. The obtained model was validated, through control designs, and optimized by taking into account physical and processing conditions.

  • This study deals with the free vibration of a circular plate in contact with a fluid; submerged in fluid, beneath fluid or on fluid. An analytical method based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial program with a good accuracy. The normalized natural frequencies are obtained in order to estimate the relative added mass effect of fluid on each vibration mode of the plate. Also, the location of plate coupled with fluid and the cases of free and bounded fluid surface are studied for the effect on the vibration characteristics.

  • This paper presents the procedure and the results of modal identification testing of a seismic monitoring system central processing unit cabinet for a nuclear power plant. This paper also provides a model updating for making effective analytical modeling of cabinet-type electrical equipment by comparing the test results with the analysis results. From the test results and their interpretation, modal properties (modal frequency, mode shape, and modal damping) of the specimen were satisfactorily identified. However, the analysis results may need to study further to find the effective and presentative model for the cabinet-type electrical equipment. This paper just presents the first stage of the research project "Development of dynamic behavior analysis technique of dynamic structure system" which is trying to build the lumped mass beam stick model even their results do not agree well with the test results.

  • This paper describes the static and dynamic characteristic analysis of the Series Resonant DC to DC Converter with frequency control. The natural commutation of all switch element is realized when the switching frequency is below the resonant frequency of the tank circuit, and the analysis is limited to only this region. For the analysis method, state plane technique is adopted, and each operation mode is defined from normalized switching frequency Fsn. Under this condition, circuit performance is analyzed ideally. The physical characteristics of the series resonant converter is easily grasped by this analysis method with frequency control and this analytical results are directly applicable to the actual converter design. The validity of the analysis is verified by comparing with experimental results and the stability of the converter is confirmed against small variations around the operating point by conventional frequency domain analysis.

  • In this study for reduction degree of freedom of dynamic model, a mixed method to combined finite element method and transfer matrix method is presented. This offers the advantages of an automatic reduction in the size of the eigenvalues problem and of a straightforward means of dynamic substructuring. The analytical procedure in this method for dynamic analysis of 3-dimensional cantilevered box beam are described. the result of numerical example is shown to demonstate the efficiency and accuracy of this method. The result form this example agree well those obtained by ANSYS, By using this technique, the number of nodes required in the regular finite element method is reduced and therefore a smaller com-puter can be used.

  • In fracture problems, stress intensity factors obtained theoretically and experimentally have been effectively utilized in the analytical evaluation of the cracks effect. The effect of surface crack of a cylindrical and a hollow cylindrical bar is investigated, as well as the effect of the thickness of a hollow cylindrical bar and inclined crack of a hollow cylinder subjected to torsion moment. In this study, stress intensity factor Km of mode III which expresses the stress state in the neighborhood of a crack tip is used. Stress analysis was conducted of the inside of a hollow cylinder in the axial direction of three dimensional crack tip subjected to torsion moment by combining the caustics method and the stress freezing method.

  • A research to maximize the force transmitted from a vibration motor at the vibration mode, installed in the cellular phone jig, is presented in this study. When the natural frequencies corresponding to the structural vibration modes of the set exist within the range of the driving frequencies acquired by changing the RPM of the vibration motor, the structural vibration resonance is applicable to maximization of the vibration force sensible to the human body such as hands, arms, and hips. The analytical modal analysis using the Finite Elements and the experimental modal testing for the set jig were performed in order to understand the structural modes and the corresponding frequencies. Then the dynamic responses of the set jig to the given driving frequency were measured and the results on maximizing the vibration were confirmed by the FEM dynamic simulation.

  • Recent trends in information storage devices disk are the transition from CD drives to high density DVD drives, the development of writable disk drives and the appearance of several high-density portable disk drives. In some flexible disk drives, self-excited disk vibrations become severe as rotation speed increases near or above critical speed. Critical speeds of CD/DVD, ASMO and floppy disks are experimentally measured and compared with analytical predictions. Flutter instability caused by aero-induced disk vibration at high speeds are experimentally observed. In ASMO, three nodal-diameter mode experiences its flutter at 8750 rpm with the frequency lock-on phenomenon. The CD/DVD disk does not have the aero-induce flutter up to 14,000 rpm.

  • An analytical study is presented on the hydroelastic vibration of two rectangular identical plates coupled with a bounded fluid by using the finite Fourier series expansion method. It is observed that the two contrastive modes, the so called the out-of-phase and in-phase modes. All natural frequency of the in-phase modes can be predicted well by the combination of the beam modes in the air, but the natural frequency of the out-of-phase mode cannot be estimated precisely. • The electron-capture detector (ECD) of gas chromatographs (GC) has been used widely in pesticide analysis. However, as ECD relies on radioactive material, it is troublesome to purchase and maintain. Therefore, potent replacements for ECD were investigated. A Pulsed-discharge detector (PDD) for ECD was tested and the analytical results of PDD (ECD mode), ${\mu}ECD$, and nitrogen-phosphorus detector (NPD) were compared for 107 pesticides including organochroline, organophosphorus, pyrethroids etc. The number of pesticides identified at the lowest limit of detection (LOD) was 36, 29, and 2 for PDD, ${\mu}ECD$, and NPD, respectively. The remaining pesticides showed same response to PDD and ${\mu}ECD$. The GC-PDD analysis of pesticides spiked into representative agricultural products (brown rice, spinach, and mandarin oranges) also showed good and/or equivalent recoveries using $GC-{\mu}ECD$.
