Physical modelling of soil liquefaction in a novel micro shaking table

  • The physical models are useful to understand the soil behaviour. Hence, these tools allow validating analytical theories and numerical data. This paper addresses the design, construction and implementation of a physical model able to simulate the soil liquefaction under different cyclic actions. The model was instrumented with a piezoelectric actuator and a set of transducers to measure the porewater pressures, displacements and accelerations of the system. The soil liquefaction was assessed in three different grain size particles of a natural sand by applying a sinusoidal signal, which incorporated three amplitudes and the fundamental frequencies of three different earthquakes occurred in Colombia. In addition, such frequencies were scaled in a micro shaking table device for 1, 50 and 80 g. Tests allowed identifying the liquefaction susceptibility at various frequency and displacement amplitude combinations. Experimental evidence validated that the liquefaction susceptibility is higher in the fine-grained sands than coarse-grained sands, and showed that the acceleration of the actuator controls the phenomena trigging in the model instead of the displacement amplitude.

  • Ion-surface collision studies at low kinetic energies (1-100 eV) provide a unique opportunity for investigating reactions and collision dynamics at surfaces. A special ion optics system for generating an energy- and mass-selected ion beam of this energy is designed and constructed. An ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) reaction chamber, in which the ions generated from the beamline collide with a solid surface, is equipped with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) as in-situ surface analytical tools. The resulting beam from the system has the following characteristics : ion current of 5-50 nA, energy spread < 2eV, current stability within ${\pm}5%,$ and unit mass resolution below 20 amu. The performance of the instrument is illustrated with data representing the implantation behavior of $Ar^+$ into a graphite (0001) surface.

  • The therapeutic use of protein pharmaceuticals produced by recombinant DNA technology is increasing in recent decades. In order to investigate the quality of recombinant proteins, it is important to identify and assign the impurities produced in the process of recombination or in storage conditions. Capillary Electrophoresis is emerging technology exhibiting high sensitivity, selectivity and speed and may be most powerful tools for this application. In this study, human growth hormone (hGH) has been analyzed by various mode of capillary electrophoresis such as capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE), and capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) to indicate the chemically or biologically oriented variants and the degraded fragments. 중국 루이스전환점 논쟁의 성과와 문제

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the debate on the Lewisian turning point in China. Despite the heated debate and accumulating research results both inside and outside China, the results showed a very complex spectrum. Different results were presented depending on which criteria the researcher selected, which analytical tools were used, and which data were utilized. Territory of China is vast, and the differences in economic basement and development stages between regions are not only severe, but also the economic gap among areas in a region is big. Therefore, it is difficult to have a significant meaning in analyzing the Lewisian Turning Point China as a whole. In addition, China's industrial production and labor force structure remain very unbalanced. This can be said to be due to the fact that the allocation and relocation of labor force according to the stage of economic development has not been achieved reasonably, and so it confuses the task of determining whether the Lewis Turning Point has arrived of not.

Affording Emotional Regulation of Distant Collaborative Argumentation-Based Learning at University

  • We study emotion regulation in a distant CABLe (Collaborative Argumentation Based-Learning) setting at university. We analyze how students achieve the group task of synthesizing the literature on a topic through scientific argumentation on the institutional Moodle's forum. Distinguishing anticipatory from reactive emotional regulation shows how essential it is to establish and maintain a constructive working climate in order to make the best out of disagreement both on social and cognitive planes. We operationalize the analysis of anticipatory emotional regulation through an analytical grid applied to the data of two groups of students facing similar disagreement. Thanks to sharp anticipatory regulation, group 1 solved the conflict both on the social and the cognitive plane, while group 2 had to call out for external regulation by the teacher, stuck in a cyclically resurfacing dispute. While the institutional digital environment did afford anticipatory emotional regulation, reactive emotional regulation rather occurred through complementary informal and synchronous communication tools. Based on these qualitative case studies, we draw recommendations for fostering distant CABLe at university.

Optical and Structural Properties of Multi-period Low-emissivity Filters by RE Magnetron Sputtering

  • Multi-period low-emissivity (low-e) filters based on [TiO$_2$|Ti|Ag|TiO$_2$] layer structure were designed and fabricated by a RF magnetron sputtering method. Optical, structural, chemical, and electrical properties were investigated with various analytical tools. Interface layers consisting of Ag, Ti, and O were observed next to Ag layers by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) analysis. The results show that Ti layers of ~ 1.8 nm protect the Ag layers from oxidation better than those of ~ 1 nm and the optical spectra of the filter with thicker Ti layers are in agreement with the simulated one. The average transmittance of a low-e filter with thicker Ti layers is reduced and the sheet resistance is slightly increased due to the increased Ti thickness.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors affecting the purchase intention of new energy vehicles, utilizing the BRA and VAM models. Based on self-interest and altruism, a model for willingness to use new energy vehicles was developed. Through analysis with analytical tools such as SPSS and AMOS, we obtained the following conclusions: Perceived value, perceived entertainment, and environmental values all have a significant positive impact on the purchase intention of new energy vehicles; Perceived risk has a negative impact on purchase intention. By conducting this research, useful suggestions can be made for the formulation of enterprise strategies, and new directions and inspirations can be provided for enterprises.

Effect of Using QuillBot on the Writing Quality of EFL College Students

  • The majority of research on Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) programs has focused primarily on Grammarly, whereas QuillBot and its use in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms remains limitedly explored. This study examined the effectiveness of using QuillBot on the writing quality of college students. A total of 26 participants took pre- and post-writing tests, and four analytical tools were applied to assess their writing quality in terms of syntactic complexity, lexical diversity, lexical richness, and readability. Results of the syntactic complexity analysis across the four indices demonstrates that the syntactic complexity of EFL writing increased significantly, and substantial differences were observed in lexical richness and readability. These results suggest that QuillBot can compensate for the drawbacks of Grammarly and assist EFL writers in improving their overall writing quality.

  • Cardiac organoids have emerged as invaluable tools for assessing the impact of diverse substances on heart function. This report introduces guidelines for general requirements for manufacturing cardiac organoids and conducting cardiac organoid-based assays, encompassing protocols, analytical methodologies, and ethical considerations. In the quest to employ recently developed three-dimensional cardiac organoid models as substitutes for animal testing, it becomes imperative to establish robust criteria for evaluating organoid quality and conducting toxicity assessments. This guideline addresses this need, catering to regulatory requirements, and describes common standards for organoid quality and toxicity assessment methodologies, commensurate with current technological capabilities. While acknowledging the dynamic nature of technological progress and the potential for future comparative studies, this guideline serves as a foundational framework. It offers a comprehensive approach to standardized cardiac organoid testing, ensuring scientific rigor, reproducibility, and ethical integrity in investigations of cardiotoxicity, particularly through the utilization of human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiac organoids.

동일 데이터를 이용한 구조방정식 툴 간의 비교분석 (A Comparison Analysis among Structural Equation Modeling (AMOS, LISREL and PLS) Using the Same Data)

  • 구조방정식 모델링은 경로분석 및 확인적 요인분석을 동시에 수행해 주는 통계적 절차를 따르고 있다. 오늘날이 통계적 절차는 사회과학 분야의 연구자에게 필수적인 도구이다. 구조방정식 모델링 분석을 해주는 대표적인 도구로는 AMOS, LISREL 그리고 PLS가 있다. AMOS는 초보자가 사용할 수 있도록 편리한 그래픽 사용자 인터페이스를 제공해 주고 있다. PLS는 그래픽 사용자 인터페이스뿐만 아니라 정규분포에 대한 제약조건도 없다는 장점을 가지고 있다. 또한 사회과학 분야에서 가장 많이 사용하는 3가지 도구 (applications)를 비교분석 하였다. 구조방정식 모델링 기반 확인적 요인 분석은 IBM AMOS Ver 23, LISREL 8.70 및 SmartPLS 2.0을 사용하였다. 구조방정식 모델링 비교 분석 결과는 LISREL이 다른 분석 도구보다 종속 변수의 설명력이 가장 높음을 확인할 수 있었다. 분석 결과에 의해 제시된 경로계수 값 및 T 값은 3가지 분석 도구 모두 유사한 결과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 이론적 실무적 시사점을 제시하였다.
