  • Visibility has been used for Visual Impact Assessment and Buildingheight Control. The purpose of this study is to elaborate visibility analysis technique in GIS, and to design a visual information system baed on this technique for diverse application. The results of this study are as follows : 1) By classifying visibility analysis techniques into two groups, Each one's merits and demerits were investigated. Practically GIS visibility analysis by DTM model using contour map and investigating it by means of site-observation can be the most effective method. 2) A visibility analysis techniquwe for V.I.A. and B.H.C. was presented by studying GIS visibility analysis by means of DTM model using contour map. There were 5 problems. 3) Adequate analysis techniques were presented according to the landscape factor-road, ship-route, port, mountain, etc. 4) Viewing distance from road and ship-route in visual corridor, landma가 visibility and distance, the angle of incidence and invisible region's depth are helpful for land scape management or land use planning.

  • A summary of the various techniques available to calculate negative skin frictions on piles is presented. In light of all these existing techniques, a simple method is recommended to calculate the negative friction based on strength of pile material, bearing capacity and pile settlement. An example is worked out and the results of a numerical analysis are highlighted.

  • This paper presents a preliminary analysis result on SAR-related journal papers published since 1960s. Abstracts of more than 2700 peer-reviewed English journal papers were collected and classified into various categories according to their systems, techniques, and application fields. Statistics on each category were provided so that one can understand historical and on-going development in SAR systems, techniques, and a variety of application fields such as land, ocean, cryosphere and atmosphere. This statistical data would be an essential guideline to establish a future SAR system application and satellite manoeuvring policy.

  • In this paper, we propose a speech recognition method based on independent component analysis (ICA) and spectral enhancement techniques. While ICA tris to separate speech signal from noisy speech using multiple channels, some noise remains by its algorithmic limitations. Spectral enhancement techniques can compensate for lack of ICA's signal separation ability. From the speech recognition experiments with instantaneous and convolved mixing environments, we show that the proposed approach gives much improved recognition accuracies than conventional methods.

  • Computer aided engineering (CAE) is a systematic approach to develop a better product/application with maximum possible options and minimum transition time. This paper presents a comprehensive feasibility analysis of various CAE techniques for evaluation and optimization of power electronic converters and systems. Different CAE methods for analysis, design, and performance improvement are classified. In addition, their advantages compared to the conventional workbench experimental methods are explained in detail and through examples.

  • The use of vibration signal for fault detection inside a machine (or its part) is not new, and a number of signal processing techniques are available at the moment. A common problem for all such techniques is the high level of background signals which often made it very difficult to distinguish the desired signals. We developed a new algorithm to detect the minute faults of rotating part based on spectral histogram analysis. The technique has subsequently been applied to the bearings and has proved to be useful.

  • This study is numerical procedure of strengthening capacity in a field structure and compare analysis data with test data. Recently, many strengthening methods are developed and used to rehabilitate existing structure. However, both theoretical background and applying techniques are not established yet. One of the most popular method is plate bonding method using either steel plate or carbon plate. This theoretical background and applying techniques are very important and those applications are differed when applied in field strengthening cases. Also depending on the analysis out come, displacement increased based n the condition of members while reaching ultimate load or failure load.

  • This paper discusses two user-friendly reliability techniques that could be implemented easily using the ubiquitous EXCEL. The techniques are First-Order Reliability Method with non-Gaussian random variables expressed using Hermite polynomials and collocation-based stochastic response surface method. It is believed that ease of implementation would popularize use of reliability-based design in practice.

  • This study aimed at the improvement of the conventional methods of VE Function Analysis, the most important phase of VE process, through Quality Function Development. The use of Function Requirement Coefficients in Quality Function Development makes the Function Development more objective, and it was found that VE techniques, when used in combination with QC techniques. Improve the value of product considerably.

  • Taguchi's parameter design seeks proper choice of levels of controllable factors (Parameters in Taguchi's terminology) that makes the qualify characteristic of a product optimal while making its variability small. This aim can be achieved by response surface techniques that allow flexibility in modeling and analysis. In this article, a collection of response surface modeling and analysis techniques is proposed to deal with the multiresponse optimization problem in experimentation with Taguchi's signal and noise factors.
