  • A Digital Broadcasting Satellite (DBS) receiver converts digital A/V streams received from a satellite to analog NTSC A/V signals in real-time. Multi-tasking is an efficient way to improve the utilization of the processor core in real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach with a balanced trade-off between hardware kernel and multi-tasking programming to increase a system throughput. First, the schedulability of the critical hard real-time tasks in the DBS receiver is verified by using a simple feasibility test. Then, several soft real-time tasks are thoughtfully programmed to satisfy functional requirements of the system.

  • Our time is called as the era of information-oriented society and up-to-date scientific technology, but it can be also called as the era of image. It is because the image has much influence upon our everyday life. In the deluge of images, the delivery of image Is a better and faster synergic tool than the delivery of language, and this trend is consistent with the phases of the times in which the analog modality of synergy is converted into the digital one. The image is a picture that is formed by a physical process, and is all the figures reflected by electronic equipments that reproduce the image. After the discovery of photograph in 1893, the image has been appeared first with the form of movie, and then with the form of TV. However, the appearance of such unidirectional synergic tools as movies and TV. has provided artists with some creative motives with which they intercommunicate their messages via some experimental bidirectional synergic tools. Among image-media arts, the performance of installation and participation is an important example that causes many changes through conceptional conversion, such as the conception of the time in space and formative characteristics. What satisfy this trend have been videos, lasers, holographic, and etc. Furthermore, the appearance of computer has provided a synesthesia, that is, a virtual reality, and mixed a real image with a visional one. The image-media art will realize better synergy through combining brand new machines, informational technology, and art, and have much influence upon our everyday life formatively and artistically in the future. with this study, through analyzing the meaning of relationship between image equipments and space.

  • Glargine insulin is a long-acting insulin analog that helps blood glucose maintenance in patients with diabetes. We constructed the pPT-GI vector to express prepeptide glargine insulin when transformed into Escherichia coli JM109. The transformed E. coli cells were cultured by fed-batch fermentation. The final dry cell mass was 18 g/l. The prepeptide glargine insulin was 38.52% of the total protein. It was expressed as an inclusion body and then refolded to recover the biological activity. To convert the prepeptide into glargine insulin, citraconylation and trypsin cleavage were performed. Using citraconylation, the yield of enzymatic conversion for glargine insulin increased by 3.2-fold compared with that without citraconylation. After the enzyme reaction, active glargine insulin was purified by two types of chromatography (ion-exchange chromatography and reverse-phase chromatography). We obtained recombinant human glargine insulin at 98.11% purity and verified that it is equal to the standard of human glargine insulin, based on High-performance liquid chromatography analysis and Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry. We thus established a production process for high-purity recombinant human glargine insulin and a method to block Arg (B31)-insulin formation. This established process for recombinant human glargine insulin may be a model process for the production of other human insulin analogs.

  • Recently, the transition from conventional analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting has been proceeding as a result of the advance in digital multimedia broadcasting technique. In radio broadcasting, Eureka-147 DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) was decided as the standard system of digital radio broadcasting in Korea. In addition to CD quality audio, a variety of data services and excellent performance in mobile reception can be served by DAB, and DAB was evolved into DMB(Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) in Korea for the purpose of emphasizing moving picture multimedia service by DAB. In case of digital broadcasting, it is absolutely essential to measure the BER(Bit Error Rate) in the received signal in order to evaluate the coverage obtained by a transmitter and the quality of the received signal. In this paper, we propose efficient subchannel data structure and BER measurement algorithm. and then verify it by laboratory experiments. With a proposed method, the synchronization for BER measurement is easily obtained and especially the exact results can be obtained by classifying the lost bits which are included in the reception-failed CIFs(Common Interleaved Frame) into errors. This makes the proposed BER measurement system especially appropriate to DMB in which the frequent changes in channel status caused by mobile reception environment exist.

  • A coded excitation has been studied to improve the performance for ultrasound imaging in term of SNR, imaging frame rate, contrast to tissue ratio, and so forth. However, it requires a complicated arbitrary waveform transmitter for each active channel that is typically composed of a multi-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) and a linear power amplifier (LPA). Not only does the LPA increase the cost and size of a transmitter block, but it consumes much power, increasing the system complexity further and causing a heating-up problem. This paper proposes an optimized 1.5bit fourth order sigma-delta modulation technique applicable to design an efficient arbitrary waveform generator with greatly reduced power dissipation and hardware. The proposed SDM can provide a required SQNR with a low over-sampling ratio of 4. To this end, the loop coefficients are optimized to minimize the quantization noise power in signal band while maintaining system stability. In addition, the decision level for the 1.5 bit quantizer is optimized for a given input waveform, which results in the SQNR improvement of more than 5dB. Computer simulation results show that the SQNR of a FM(frequency modulated) signal generated by using the proposed method is about 26dB, and the peak side-lobe level (PSL) of its compressed waveform on receive is -48dB.

  • Background: High complication rate after open reduction and internal fixation can lead to use of primary total elbow replacement (TER) in treatment of complex distal humerus fractures in elderly patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term outcomes and complications after primary TER in patients with complex distal humerus fracture. Methods: Nine patients with acute complex distal humerus fracture were treated by primary TER using the semiconstrained Coonrad-Morrey prosthesis. The mean age of patients was 72.7 years (range, 63-85 years). Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated over a mean follow-up of 29.0 months (range, 12-65 months) using visual analog scale (VAS) score for pain; Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS); Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (Quick-DASH) score; and serial plain radiographs. Complications were also evaluated. Results: At the final follow-up, mean VAS, MEPS, and Quick-DASH scores were 1.2, 80.5, and 20, respectively. The mean range of motion was 127.7° of flexion, 13.8° of extension, 73.3° of pronation, and 74.4° of supination. There was no evidence of bushing wear or high-grade implant loosening on serial plain radiographs. Three complications (33.3%) comprising two periprosthetic fractures and one ulnar neuropathy were observed. Conclusions: Primary TER for treatment of complex distal humerus fractures in elderly patients yielded satisfactory short-term outcomes. However, surgeons should consider the high complication rate after primary TER.

  • Objective : Because elderly patients are undergoing more surgeries, the importance of postoperative cognitive impairment (CI) evaluations is rising, especially for spine surgery, which is related to subjective pain. We investigated the prevalence of undiagnosed CI among elderly patients who underwent spine surgery and the impact of CI on postoperative outcomes. Methods : The preoperative cognitive statuses of 129 patients over 65 who underwent lumbar spine surgery from 2012 to 2014 were determined with the Mini-Mental State Examination, and patients with scores under 24 were diagnosed with CI. The patients were then divided into a CI group (n=49) and non-cognitive impairment (NCI) group (n=80). Results : Among the 129 patients, 49 (38.0%) were diagnosed with CI, and 9 (7.0%) had severe CI. The age of the CI group ($72.88{\pm}6.20years$) was significantly greater than that of the NCI group ($69.96{\pm}4.53years$). In contrast, the postoperative visual analog scale scores and performance statuses did not differ significantly. However, postoperative delirium was more frequent and the hospital stay length was longer in the CI group compared with the NCI group (p<0.05). Conclusion : A high prevalence of undiagnosed CI was discovered among elderly patients undergoing spine surgery. The existence of CI was associated with higher rates of postoperative delirium and prolonged hospital stays, which affected clinical outcomes. Thus, CI assessments should be included in preoperative evaluations of elderly patients prior to spine surgery.

  • Objective : The cervicothoracic junction (CTJ) is a biomechanically and anatomically complex region that has traditionally posed problems for surgical access. In this retrospective study, we describe our clinical experiences of the treatment of metastatic spinal tumors at the CTJ and the results. Methods : From June 2006 to December 2011, 23 patients who underwent surgery for spinal tumors involving the CTJ were enrolled in our study. All of the patients were operated on through the posterior approach, and extent of resection was classified as radical, debulking, and simple neural decompression. Adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) was also considered. Visual analog scale score for pain assessment and Medical Research Council (MRC) grade for motor weakness were used, while pre- and post-operative performance status was evaluated using the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). Results : Almost all of the patients were operated using palliative surgical methods (91.3%, 21/23). Ten complications following surgery occurred and revision was performed in four patients. Of the 23 patients of this study, 22 showed significant pain relief according to their visual analogue scale scores. Concerning the aspect of neurological and functional recovery, mean MRC grade and ECOG score was significantly improved after surgery (p<0.05). In terms of survival, radiation therapy had a significant role. Median overall survival was 124 days after surgery, and the adjuvant-RT group (median 214 days) had longer survival times than prior-RT (63 days) group. Conclusion : Although surgical procedure in CTJ may be difficult, we expect good clinical results by adopting a palliative posterior surgical method with appropriate preoperative preparation and postoperative treatment.

  • In this paper, CMOS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a 6-bit 100MSPS at 1.8V is described. The architecture of the proposed ADC is based on a folding type ADC using resistive interpolation technique for low power consumption. Further, the number of folding blocks (NFB) is decreased by half of them compared to the conventional ones. A moebius-band averaging technique is adopted at the proposed ADC to improve performance. With the clock speed of 100MSPS, the ADC achieves an effective resolution bandwidth (ERBW) of 50MHz, while consuming only 4.5mW of power. The measured result of figure-of-merit (FoM) is 0.93pJ/convstep. The INL and DNL are within ${\pm}0.5 LSB$, respectively. The active chip occupies an area of $0.28mm^2$ in 0.18um CMOS technology.
