Infiltrative Lipoma Invading the Anal Sac in a Dog: A Rare Case Report

  • A 6-year-old female Chihuahua was presented to the Animal Medical Center for surgical resection of a perineal mass that had recently increased in size. Ultrasonography revealed a large, homogeneous fatty mass with irregular margins between the surrounding muscle layers due to infiltrating fatty tissues. Cytological findings from fine-needle aspirates revealed numerous sheets and clusters of adipocytes, which was consistent with the fatty mass. Based on ultrasonographic and cytological findings, an infiltrative lipoma was suspected. During the surgery, the perineal mass was found to be non-encapsulated, irregularly marginated, and extensively distributed into the surrounding muscles. The mass extended inside the pelvic cavity and left anal sac. The perineal mass was surgically removed and submitted for histopathologic examination. Histopathology confirmed that the mass was an infiltrative lipoma invading into the anal sac and surrounding muscles. The present report was an unusual presentation of infiltrative lipoma that invaded the anal sac in the perineum.

Use of a Foley Catheter for Anal Sacculectomy in Dogs (개에서 항문낭 절제를 위한 폴리카테터의 이용)

  • Eight dogs were presented with anal sacculitis with purulent exudates and/or open in the right or left anal sac. Patient dogs, ranging in size from 3-to-8 kg, were treated with closed anal sacculectomies, in which the balloon of a Foley catheter (No. 6, 1.5 ml) was used to facilitate surgical dissection of the sac. In all cases, the Foley catheter successfully distended the anal sac during its removal. Clinical signs associated with the diseased anal sac were abated In the all dogs for a follow-up period of one-to-three months. Anal sacculectomy is a good therapeutic option for cases of chronic anal sacculectomy or impaction. The use of a small Foley catheter to distend the anal sacs during surgery was easy, Inexpensive, and successful.

Histopathology of canine sweat gland neoplasms (개의 땀샘에서 유래되는 종양의 병리조직학적 연구)

  • Gross and light microscopic findings are described for 34 canine sweat gland neoplasms including tumors derived from apocrine gland in anal sac and ceruminous gland in ear. Affected dogs are usually 5.2 years and sex predilection have not been seen. Sweat gland carcinoma(n=19) is predominant type for sweat gland neoplsm, while papillary syringadenoma(n=2) and spiradenoma(n=2) are rare type in this study. Distinct patterns identified in cutaneous sweat gland carcinoma are tubular(n=7), solid(n=5), mixed(n=4), papillary(n=2) and signet-ring(n=1). Mixed tumors which are characterized by myxomatous and chondroid metaplasia are seen in cutaneous sweat and ceruminous gland. The carcinoma derived apocrine gland of the anal sac induces humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in two dogs in this study. Histologically, apocrine gland carcinoma of the anal sac has distinct rossette formation.

Malignant Anal Sac Melanoma in a Dog

  • A five-year-old female Yorkshire Terrier dog presented with a perianal mass. Fine needle aspiration revealed that the mass comprised two different types of cells: hepatoid epithelial cells and melanin-containing melanocytes. Histopathological examination confirmed perianal gland adenoma with malignant melanoma. Evidence of metastasis was found on thoracic radiography with soft-tissue densities observed within the pulmonary parenchyma. The dog survived for three months after diagnosis of malignant melanoma. This report describes the clinical findings, diagnostics used, cytological and histopathological findings, and the potential prognosis for a dog diagnosed with malignant anal sac melanoma.

Vertebral Metastasis from Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Anal Canal

  • Distant metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma from the anal canal is an uncommon event. However, hematogenous spread to the vertebrae may occur in the course of this disease. The route of metastasis from the anal canal seems to be Batson's vertebral venous system. A 52-year-old female patient presented with lower back and right leg pain of one-week history. She has undergone radiotherapy and chemotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal and then was followed by surgical resection. Three months later, magnetic resonance images of the lumbar spine disclosed a well-enhanced mass of L5 vertebral body compressing the thecal sac. Surgical decompression and biopsy were performed. Histopathological study confirmed carcinoma of the squamous cell origin. We report a ra re case of vertebral metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal with a pertinent review of literature.

Clinical Presentation and Management of Five Dogs with Apocrine Gland Adenocarcinoma of Anal Sac (다섯 마리의 개에서 발생한 아포크린샘암종 증례)

  • Five dogs diagnosed as apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (AGAC) of the anal sac based on cytology and/or histology. Mean age of these dogs was 11 years old. One dog treated with supportive care without other medical interventions for hypercalcemia was died one month after diagnosis. Other four dogs were treated with chemotherapy and one of these dogs was intervened with complete surgical resection. Two months after the diagnosis, one of the dogs treated with chemotherapy died. The survival time of other survived three dogs from the time of diagnosis was 19, 9, and 13 months respectively and they are still alive at this time. After chemotherapy, three dogs were managed generally in good body condition and maintained as similar in size as time of diagnosis. The results are suggested that it is worthwhile to try chemotherapy for managing AGAC in dogs especially complicated or metastasized to regional lymph nodes.

Inherited Macrothrombocytopenia in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

  • A 1-year-old intact male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was presented with a ruptured anal sac. On routine preanesthetic screening tests for surgical resection, the thrombocytopenia was observed by an impedance-type autoanalyzer. A peripheral blood smear was used as a follow-up test and giant platelets were seen on the smear. DNA assay of this patient confirmed that the cause of the platelet abnormalities in this patient was genetic mutation. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of macrothrombocytopenia confirmed based on the DNA assay results, in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Korea.

Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome resulting from toceranib phosphate in a dog with apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma: a case report

  • An 11-year-old neutered male Miniature Poodle with a stage 3 apocrine gland adenocarcinoma was started on chemotherapy with toceranib phosphate after surgery. Beginning on day 10 of toceranib, the dog's foot pads became erythematous and hyperkeratinized. The dog complained of pain, inability to walk, depression, and loss of appetite. The symptoms resolved when toceranib was discontinued and reappeared when toceranib was resumed. Grade 3 palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia was identified as an adverse event of toceranib based on the VCOG-CTCAE and Naranjo scale. Although very rare in veterinary medicine, clinicians should consider that palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia can occur after toceranib administration.

Morphological Development and Reproductive Behavior of Hedgehog Seahorse Hippocampus spinosissimus (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) (Hedgehog Seahorse (Hippocampus spinosissimus)의 산출습성 및 형태발달)

  • This study described the reproductive behavior and the morphological development of the larvae and juvenile of the hedgehog seahorse (Hippocampus spinosissimus). Larvae released from male seahorse were reared for 30 days in the laboratory. At the birth, the small flap-like mouth and anus of the yolk-sac larvae were open, and the yolk was completely absorbed within 1 day. The size of newborn larvae ranged 7.01-13.19mm (mean $9.26\pm1.9mm$, n=9) in TL (total length). The larvae had 15-16 pectoral fin rays and 19 dorsal fin rays, but 4 anal fin rays were not completely developed. The larval size ranged 13.38-14.38 mm (mean $13.96\pm0.3mm$, n=6) in TL at 1 day after release, and they had 17 pectoral fin rays, 20 dorsal fin rays and 4 anal fin rays when the larvae reached the juvenile stage. Juvenile size ranged 14.98-16.42mm (mean $15.84\pm0.5mm$, n=5) in TL at 3 days after release, and 1, 4, 6, 8 trunk spines extended quickly. Terminal part of the coronet became a four-forked wedge shape concurrently. Juvenile became 23.25mm (n=l) in TL after 15 days and all 11 trunk rings was connected completely. After 20 days, the juveniles were 24.66-28.65mm (mean $27.26\pm1.6mm$, n=5) in TL, and many melanophores appeared in integument. In the eye lenses, 5-6 lusters were formed. After 30 days, the juveniles were 26.78-28.26 mm (mean $27.36\pm0mm$, n=4)in TL and 8-9 lusters appeared on the eye lenses. Coronet terminal part developed to a five-forked crown-shape completely.
