  • Power system restoration following a massive blackout starts with re-energizing Primary Restorative Transmission (PRT) systems at first. As power systems have been gradually enlarged and become more complex, periodical evaluation and reassignment of PRTs are needed. So far it has been decided by try and error approach by corresponding human experts to analyze and evaluate them. This paper presents an intelligent system that finds optimal primary restoration paths using analytic and heuristic knowledge from PSS/E data, and suggests an optimal PRTs depending on the condition of Ferranti effect or a reactive power capability margin of black-start generator. This system was tested in Korea Electric Power system, and showed a promising result.

  • This study is focussed on an optimal vehicle routing model for multi-supply centers in two-echelon logistic system. The aim of this study is to deliver goods for demand sites with optimal decision. This study investigated an integrated model using step-by-step approach based on relationship that exists between the inventory allocation and vehicle routing with restricted amount of inventory and transportations such as the capability of supply centers, vehicle capacity and transportation parameters. Three sub-models are developed: 1) sector-clustering model, 2) a vehicle-routing model based on clustering and a heuristic algorithm, and 3) a vehicle route scheduling model using TSP-solver based on genetic and branch-and-bound algorithm. Also, we have developed computer programs for each sub-models and user interface with visualization for major inputs and outputs. The application and superior performance of the proposed model are demonstrated by several sample runs for the inventory-allocation and vehicle routing problems.

  • Purpose: This study was to determine the effects of foot reflexomassage on constipated college women for the treatment of constipation. Method: The researcher sampled nursing students attending a college of nursing science in Gyeonggi-Do, and checked if they were affected by constipation in reference to the Rome II criteria & CAS. They were randomly divided into an experimental group(15 subjects) and a control group(15 subjects). Foot reflexomassage was applied to the experimental group 10 times in 2 weeks: each time lasted 40 minutes. The frequency of defecation and severity of constipation by CAS were measured. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS 11.5 program. Result: The CAS score of the experimental group was significantly lower after foot reflexomassage than those of the control group(p=.000). Conclusion: Foot reflexomassage can be considered an effective alternative treatment for constipated young women.

  • Synchronization between media is an important aspect in the design of multimedia streaming system. This paper proposes a precise media synchronization mechanism for digital video and audio transport over IP networks. To support synchronization between video and audio bitstreams transported over IP networks, RTP/RTCP protocol suite is usually employed. To provide a precise mechanism for media synchronization between video and audio, we suggest an efficient media synchronization algorithm based on NPT (Normal Play Time) which can be derivable from the timestamp information in the header part of RTP packet generated for the transport of video and audio streams. With the proposed method, we do not need to send and process any RTCP SR (sender report) packet which is required for conventional media synchronization scheme, and accordingly could reduce the number of required UDP ports and the amount of control traffic injected into the network.

  • An extensive biological nutrient removal pilot plant study of anoxic/anaerobic/ aerobic treatment process was conducted to eastblish an optimum operational mode using primary dffluent. Two operational modes, (1) Qr/Q was 3.0 and maintaining EMLSS of 3100 mg/L in which the best operational results were obtained from previous bench scale study using synthetic wastewater (2) Qr/Q was 0.5 and EMLSS of 2200 mg/L which was compatible with the main plant, were Compared and evaluated for removal of nitrogen and/or phosphorous under field conditions. The nitrogen removal increased with increasing recycle ratios, but the phosphorous removal revealed more consistent results with 83percent removal efficiency in the second mode compared with 80 percent in the first mode. Above all, the two modes equally showed good BOD and nitrogen removals by nitrification-denitrification processes. It was also observed that no scum formed in the pilot plant and the sludge exhibited excellent settling characteristic all the time. The modified biological nutrient removal train can be adopted to the main plant without any major changes of their operational modes.

  • Phytoremediation-the use of plants for the in situ treatment of contaminated soil and water-has recently emerged as an inexpensive and user-friendly alternative to traditional methods of environmental clean-up. The present article outlines the characteristics of phytoremediation based on accumulated research evidence, along with discussions on its advantages and disadvantages. It further reviews various mechanisms involved in the phytoremediation processes: phytoextraction, rhizofiltration, phytostabilization, phytovolatilization and phytodegradation. Along the way, the author summarizes examples of its applications to environmental pollution control. These include wastewater treatment, removal of heavy metals, and hydrocarbons, remediation of recalcitrant contaminants, phytoremediation of radionuclides, and application of transgenic plants for enhanced biodegradation and phytoremediation. The remainder of the article briefly concludes with directions for future research.

  • Inthis paper, we present an efficient migration strategy of mobile agent for data mining application. The purpose of the proposed algorithm is to set up the best migration plan of mobile agent with regard to minimizing network execution time .In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we designed a performance evaulation model for three paradigms from data mining, i.e. RPC, mobile agent and mobile agent with locker pattern, and we then evaluated the algorithm by simulation.

  • In the embodiment of power line modem, the important elements are selection of a suitable line-coupler, choice of a modulation method good for channel environments, and an efficient data coding method etc. In this paper an appropriate modulation method was implemented their results in details and verified by the simulations. The data compensation request techniques that uses error checking was discussed. Finally, application of other modulation method by detection of error rate per bit according to vary of channel error caused by electric equipment that is connected to power line was studied.

  • Antimicrobial activities of three different extracts from experimentally prepared scute decoction, commercial scute decoction and an extract from Scutellaria baicalensis were evaluated and their inhibitory potencies were compared. Both the extracts from scute decoction and Scutellaria showed rather strong antimicrobial activities against E. coli and St. aureus at the low concentration of 2.5 mg/ml. On the other hand, the extract of commercial scute decoction was found to show an inhibitory effect at higher concentration (75 mg/ml). All preparations did not inhibit the fungal growth of Aspergillus niger. Both Sh. dysenteriae (Subgroup A) and Sh. boydii (Subgroup C) which were used for determination of the strain differences in Shigelia spp. had almost the same susceptibility to the extract from sucute decoction.

  • This paper proposes a new building segmentation method from 1m resolution imagery using an Active Contour Model, known as "Balloons". The original balloons, which was designed by Cohen(Cohen, 1991) to extract features from medical images, are modified for building segmentation. The proposed method consists of two phases. Firstly, building boundaries are extracted by balloons with a given position on buildings from an operator. Since balloons actively adjust their shapes according to the boundaries, there is no more shape limitations on detecting buildings. Secondly, buildings are segmented by connecting the corners detected from the building boundaries, because most buildings, which are man-made objects, are effectively described by polygons. The test results show that most buildings are segmented efficiently and easily. The proposed method is new and timely as 1m resolution spaceborne imagery will be available in the very near future. The proposed method can be used fur operational building segmentation from such imagery.
