  • The conventional high frequency phase-shifted full bridge dc/dc converter has a disadvantage that a circulating current flows through transformer and switching devices during the freewheeling interval. Due to this circulating current, RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices are increased. To alleviate this problem, this paper provides a circulating current free type high frequency soft switching phase-shifted full bridge (FB) dc/dc converter with the modified energy recovery snubber (ERS) attached at the secondary side of transforemr.

  • To achieve high efficiency in high power and high frequency applications, reduction of switching losses and noise is very important. In this paper, an improved zero voltage switching forward dc/dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter is constructed by using energy recovery snubbers in parallel with the main switches and output diodes of the conventional forward dc/dc converter. Due to the use of the energy recovery snubbers in the primary and secondary side, the proposed converter achieves zero-voltage-switching turn-off without switching losses for switching devices and output rectification diodes. The complete operating principles and experimental results will be presented.

  • In order to increase the power density of power converters, reduction of the switching losses at high-frequency switching conditions is one of the most important issues. This paper presents a new gate drive circuit that enables the reduction of switching losses in both the Power MOSFET and the IGBT. A distinctive feature of this method is that both the turn-on loss and the turn-off loss are decreased simultaneously without using a conventional ZVS circuit, such as the quasi-resonant adjunctive circuit. Experimental results of the switching loss of both the Power MOSFET and the IGBT are shown. In addition, an energy recovery circuit suitable for use in IGBTs that can be realized by modifying the proposed gate drive circuit is also proposed. The effectiveness of both the proposed circuits was confirmed experimentally by the buck-chopper circuit.

  • There is an increasing demand for efficient high power/weight auxiliary power supplies for use on high speed traction application. Many new conversion techniques have been proposed to reduce the voltage and current stress of switching components, and the switching losses in the traditional pulse width modulation(PWM) converter. Especially, the phase shift full bridge zero voltage switching PWM techniques are thought most desirable for many applications because this topology permits all switching devices to operate under zero voltage switching(ZVS) by using circuit parasitic components such as leakage inductance of high frequency transformer and power device junction capacitance. The proposed topology is found to have higher efficiency than conventional soft-switching converter. Also it is easily applicable to phase shift full bridge converter by applying an energy recovery snubber consisted of fast recovery diodes and capacitors.

  • This paper proposes a new converter for switched reluctance motors using a Boost converter in conjunction with a Buck converter. The proposed converter has a unity power factor(hereafter referred to an UPF) in the ac input regardless of the load variations. Moreover, compared to the conventional converter topologies, the total system efficiency is improved by introducing choppingless voltage control methods in the machine side converter and an energy recovery snubber in the pre-voltage regulation stage, respectively.

  • The conventional Phase-Shift Full-Bridge (PSFB) converter has a serious voltage spike because of the ringing between the leakage inductance of the transformer and the parasitic output capacitance of the secondary side rectifier switches. To overcome this problem, an asynchronous active clamp technique employing an auxiliary DC/DC converter has been proposed. However, an exact analyses for designing the auxiliary DC/DC converter has not been presented. Therefore, the amount of power that is supposed to be handled in the auxiliary DC/DC converter is calculated through a precise mode analyses in this paper. In addition, this paper proposes a lossy snubber circuit with hysteresis characteristics to reduce the burden that the auxiliary DC/DC converter should take during the starting interval. This technique results in optimizing the size of the magnetic component of the auxiliary DC/DC converter. The operational principles and the theoretical analyses are validated through experiments with a 48V-to-30V/15A prototype.

  • In this paper, a high frequency flyback type zero voltage soft switching PWM DC-DC converter using IGBTs is proposed. Effective applications for this power converter can be found in auxiliary power supplies of rolling stock transportation and electric vehicles. This power converter is basically composed of active power switches and a flyback high frequency transformer. In addition to these, passive lossless snubbers with power regeneration loops for energy recovery, consisting of a three winding auxiliary high frequency transformer, auxiliary capacitors and diodes are introduced to achieve zero voltage soft switching from light to full load conditions. Furthermore, this power converter has some advantages such as low cost circuit configuration, simple control scheme and high efficiency. Its operating principle is described and to determine circuit parameters, some practical design considerations are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed power converter is evaluated and compared with the hard switching PWM DC-DC converter from an experimental point of view and the comparative electromagnetic conduction and radiation noise characteristics of both DC-DC power converter circuits are also depicted.
