  • An Chung Hwan(安中丸) is a Chinesε patent medicine, which has been used for various purposes in Korea. An Chung Hwan is composed of 15 kinds of powdered crude drugs and has been used for stomachic disorder, acute and chronic indigestion, dyspepsia, and diarrhea. For the identification of individual crude drugs in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used as it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this study, it is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very effective for the identification of 15 crude drug ingredients in An Chung Hwan.

  • This paper presents the structural analysis of the pressure vessels in the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) under developing at KORDi, which consists of a ROV, an AUV and a launcher at 6000 m depth in the ocean. Analytical, linear and nonlinear stress and buckling analysis of cylindrical pressure vessels using FEM (ANSYS) are performed to verify the safety of the current design.

  • Rg3 is a derivative of triterpenoid dammarane, which originally extracted from Red Ginseng, which have been known to have neuroprotective, vasodilator, antioxidative, antimetastasis, and direct anticancer effects. These various backgrounds of Rg3 can provide an additional interest in respect to the “hematopoiesis” in bone marrow and spleen cells. We, therefore, have investigated what effects and correlates of Rg3 (e.g. suppression and side effects) are affected in relation with the bone marrow and spleen cells of mouse. (omitted)

  • Sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (mesna) is a protective agent that is widely used in medicine because of its antioxidant effects. Recently, reactive oxygen species (ROS) were shown to increase pigmentation. Thus, ROS scavengers and inhibitors of ROS production may suppress melanogenesis. Forkhead box-O3a (FoxO3a) is an antimelanogenic factor that mediates ROS-induced skin pigmentation. In this study, we aimed to investigate the whitening effect of mesna and the signaling mechanism mediating this effect. Human melanoma (MNT-1) cells were used in this study. mRNA and protein expression were measured by real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting analysis to track changes in FoxO3a-related signals induced by mesna. An immunofluorescence assay was performed to determine the nuclear translocation of FoxO3a. When MNT-1 melanoma cells were treated with mesna, melanin production and secretion decreased. These effects were accompanied by increases in FoxO3a activation and nuclear translocation, resulting in downregulation of four master genes of melanogenesis: MITF, TYR, TRP1, and TRP2. We found that mesna, an antioxidant and radical scavenger, suppresses melanin production and may therefore be a useful agent for the clinical treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders.

  • In this paper, the problem of the design of an intelligent type precompensator is discussed for the performance improvement of a power system stabilizer(PSS). An advantage of the scheme is that an existing PSS can be easily modified in our control structure simply by adding an adaptive neurofuzzy-based precompensator. The overall system has been tested on a simulation model in different operation conditions. Case studies show the proposed scheme can provide the good damping of the power system over the wide range of operating conditions and improve the dynamic performance of the system.

  • Force and compliance control has been used in the control of legged walking vehicles to achieve superior terrain adaptability on rough terrains. The compliance control requires distribution of the vehicle load over the supporting legs. However, the constraint equations for ground reaction forces of supporting legs are generally underdetermined, allowing an infinite number of solutions. Thus, it is possible to apply an optimization criteria in solving the force setpoint problem. It has been observed that the previous force setpoint optimization methods sometimes cause a system stability problem and/or the load distribution among supporting legs is not well balanced due to a memory effect on the solution trajectory, This paper presents an iterative force setpoint method to solve this problem using an interpolation technique. By simulation it was shown that an excessive load unbalance among supporting legs and the memory effect in the force trajectory are alleviated much with the proposed method.
