  • Purpose: This study was done to examine how medication contamination in a single-dose glass ampule is affected by minute glass flakes generated in different methods of cutting the ampule. Method: Sixty medication-containing glass ampules were randomly assigned to two groups. The number of glass flakes, resulting from two different cutting methods (with cotton and without cotton), were counted under the microscope. Contamination was evaluated by extracted the medication with a syringe and culturing it in E. coli, coliform, and aerobic bacteria culture media. Result: Fewer glass flakes were found in the ampules when the ampule was cut with cotton. The use of cotton, however, did not significantly change the degree of drug contamination. Conclusion: Although minute glass flakes generated in the ampule cutting operation did not significantly contaminate the medication and the use of cotton decreased the number of glass flakes in the ampules, glass flakes injected into the blood and tissues of the patient remain a risk factor. Therefore, pre-filled syringes or syringes with filters would be alternative methods and safeguards against the possible injection of glass flakes generated while cutting the ampule.

  • Two types of ground-water sampling techniques for CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) analysis, the cold-welded copper tube method and flame-sealed borosilicate glass ampule method, were compared and evaluated. CFCs concentrations by the copper tube method showed a poor reproducibility among triplicates whereas those by the glass ampule method showed a good agreement and relative standard deviations of triplicates were less than 5%. The poor reproducibility of the copper tube method appears to be attributed to the incomplete sealing in connection between faucets of wellhead and the sampling apparatus. The copper tube method also showed higher CFCs concentrations than the glass ampule method, which is more pronounced for CFC-11 than for CFC-12. The plastic tubings and rubber gasket of faucets in case of the copper tube method possibly contaminated the samples with CFC-11 and CFC-12. The potential of CFCs contamination for the glass ampule method was eliminated by using stainless steel and Nylon only and by connecting the sampling equipment directly to the main discharge pipe of wellhead. The validity of the glass ampule method were also verified by detecting very low level of CFCs for the ground-water sample which is old enough to have negligible CFCs.

  • Two sampling methods for chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) in groundwater were compared and assessed with groundwater samples in Jeju Island. CFCs concentrations from copper tube method were widely variable among triplicates and higher than those from flame-sealed glass ampule method. For the copper tube method, this is aggravated by rubber packings in the faucet of discharge line of wells, which was removed for the glass ampule method. The poor reproducibility and apparent contamination of results by copper tube method is due to the improper sealing of copper tubes and materials in water discharge line. This suggests that it is more difficult to achieve complete isolation from the atmosphere in the copper tube method and that materials that could release CFCs should be avoided along the sampling flow lines. It seems that the flame-sealed glass ampule method is more relevant for groundwater sampling for CFCs though it requires more complicated equipments and procedures.

  • Purpose: Glass particle contamination of the contents of single-dose glass ampules can occur upon opening. Different aspiration techniques, different sizes of needles, different sizes of ampules, and different cutting methods were studied to determine if they had any effect on glass particle contamination. Method: Different aspiration techniques(with filter, without filter), different sizes of needles(18G, 25G), different sizes of ampules(2ml, 20m1), and different cutting methods(with cotton, without cotton) were evaluated. Method: Twenty ampules were randomly assigned in each group. Three slides containing glass particles for each ampule were made and counted under a microscope by 3 study blind persons. Result: The number of glass particle contamination is much less when using a filter rather than without a filter. The number of glass particle contamination is much less when using a 25G needle rather than on 18G needle. The number of glass particle contamination is much less when using 2ml ampules rather than 20m1 ampules. The number of glass particle contamination is much less when using cotton rather than without cotton. Conclusion: It was shown that using a filter, a small size needle, smaller sized ampules and using cotton when cutting the ampule will decrease the risk of parenteral injection of glass particles.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of ampule containing herbal extract(Ulmus davidiana, Ginkgo biloba, Perilla ocymoides, Morus alba, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice), and Angelica gigas) on skin wrinkles in adult women with facial wrinkles. Methods : A total of 12 women, 30 to 46 years of age, with wrinkles in the corner of eyes, applied ampule containing herbal extract twice daily for up to 12 weeks. Silicon replicas of right crow's feet area and antecubital fossa were taken before use of test product and at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. The replicas were analyzed by optical profilometry with Skin Visiometer SV600. The wrinkle and roughness parameters, R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 were calculated and statistically analyzed. In addition, a subjective evaluation of product efficacy was conducted by patient's assessment. Results : The mean values of all the skin roughness parameters were decreased at 4-week, and decreased significantly at 8 and 12-week except R4 at 12-week after test product use. The subjective evaluation of wrinkle by patient's assessment was also improved. However, one patient noted stiffness of face after use of test product. Conclusions : These study suggested that the application of ampule containing herbal extract twice daily for 12 weeks may effectively improve the facial wrinkles without severe side effect.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors influencing glass particle contamination in single dose glass ampules upon opening. Method: The study was single case experimental design. Different methods of opening ampule (hand, wooden stick), different sizes of ampules(1cc, 2cc) and different sizes of needles(17gauge, 23gauge, $5{\mu}m$ filter) were evaluated. Eighteen ampules were randomly assigned in each group. The number of glass ampule particles ${\ge}10{\mu}m$ was counted by microscope. Results: There was no significant difference in the number of particles aspirated by opening methods. But number of glass particles was much lower when using 1cc ampules rather than 2cc ampules and was also much lower when using smaller size needles and needles which include a $5{\mu}m$ filter rather than larger size of needles. Conclusion: We suggest that larger bore or unfiltered needles increase the risk of aspirating more glass particles than smaller bore or filter needles. In addition, these data show that a wooden stick can be used as a method opening glass ampules.

  • In order to examine the effect of rehydration methods on viability after freeze-drying of Streptomyces aureofaciens, we labeled the DNA of S. aureofaciens with $^3H-adenine$. Extracellular radioactivity levels appeared to be high in the rehydrated solutions after freeze-drying than freezing-thawing. In effects of rehydration after freeze-drying, the viability of the cell appeared about 20% in case of with admitting air at single ampule, but that of which appeared about 91% in case of without admitting air at double ampule. Thus, S. aureofaciens cells were damaged during the process of rehydration after freeze-drying.

  • We have synthesized La doped $CaFe_2As_2$ single crystals with Sn flux in an evacuated quartz ampule. Doping and pressure effects on the magnetic and superconducting properties of the under-doped $Ca_{1-x}La_xFe_2As_2$ (x=0.08, 0.1) were studied by measuring electrical resistivity under quasi-hydrostatic pressure up to 21 kbar. Magnetic transition temperatures for all studied concentrations were sharply suppressed with slight amplitude of pressure, less than 3 kbar, while superconducting transition temperatures were robust against pressure. In this communication, we report temperature-pressure phase diagram for the La-doped $CaFe_2As_2$ single crystals.
