The objectives of this study were to compare nutrient input by throughfall, stemflow and litterfall and concentration of nutrient in soil water between deciduous forest stand and Larix kaempferi plantation at Mt. Joongwang, Pyongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. The amount of rainfall interception during study period in deciduous forest stand and L. kaempferi plantation was 12% and 36%, respectively. Concentrations of cation ($Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$) in throughfall were not different, while concentration of $Cl^-$ in stemflow was higher in L. kaempferi plantation. The results indicated that annual nutrient inputs by rainfall with the exception of $Cl^-$ were significantly greater in deciduous forest stand. In soil water, concentrations of anion ($Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$) in A-layer, and $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ in B-layer were higher in L. kaempferi plantation. Litterfall input during study period was $2,589kg\;ha^{-1}$ in deciduous forest stand and $1,046kg\;ha^{-1}$ in L. kaempferi plantation. Concentration of N was higher in L. kaempferi plantation, while N input from litterfall was greater in the deciduous forest stand ($36.81kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$) than L. kaempferi plantation ($16.16kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$). $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ in litterfall collected from deciduous forest stand were found to be higher than those from the L. kaempferi plantation. Also, input of those were greater in deciduous forest stand. Thus, total nutrient input by throughfall, stemflow and litterfall was greater in deciduous forest stand than L. kaempferi plantation, significantly.
Field microplot(D 20cm, 1 85cm) experiment filled with Bonryang sandy loam soil(Typic Udifluvents) was conducted to obtain quantitative information on the movement of applied nitrogen under different soil moisture regimes and ladino clover cultivation. Urea applied to the soil was quickly transformed into $NH_4$-N which was slowly to $NO_3$-N which governed the downward movement of inorganic N applied in the soil. Downward movement of inorganic nitrogen was relatively slow in the early growing stages of ladino clover when $NH_4$-N form was the major inorganic nitrogen in the soil. In the later growing stages when $NO_3$-N was the major form, inorganic nitrogen moved rapidly with soil water. Favorable soil moisture condition increased downward movement and plant uptake of inorganic nitrogen. In the non irrigated bare soil 92% of applied nitrogen was leached downwards out of the microplots at the final harvest. Under the non-irrigated condition 57% of applied nitrogen was taken up by plants and 37% of nitrogen remained in the soil 5.5 months after sowing. Nitrogen uptake by plants in the microplots irrigated at 0.2 bar was 4.03g/microplot at the final harvest, which was more than the amount of nitrogen applied.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the load of nutrient from paddy fields. Water management practices that can reduce eutrophication and meet water quality requirements will also be addressed. Continuous monitoring from May to September in 2002 and 2003 was conducted for water quantification and qualification at the intensive paddy fields in Icheon, Gyunggi province of Korea. Water balance and concentration variation of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water were independently compared for water quality assessment at each rice cultivation period. Rice land preparation and transplanting periods usually marked the highest water demand when compared to other periods of cultivation. Overall, a greater net irrigation ratio was observed during the transplanting period in 2002 (92.3%) and 2003 (87.2%). The measured total N loads of precipitation, irrigation, drainage, and percolation during the rice cultivation period were 9.9, 41.6, 22.1, and $5.5kg\;ha^{-1}$ for 2002 and 15.8, 55.4, 17.3, and $7.5kg\;ha^{-1}$ for 2003, respectively. The measured total P loads of precipitation, irrigation, drainage, and percolation during the rice cultivation period were 2.1, 13.0, 3.6, and $1.8kg\;ha^{-1}$ for 2002 and 1.6, 15.0, 5.0, and $1.2kg\;ha^{-1}$ for 2003, respectively. Daily nutrient load followed the pattern of surface drainage water, but this pattern was changed by rainfall events. The nutrient load in drainage water depends on rainfall and surface drainage water amount from the paddy fields. Interestingly, the load of total N and total P output was smaller than the input load due to the natural infiltration that Occurred during the rice cultivation period. It is concluded that the paddy fields have a beneficial effect on the ecosystem and can reduce eutrophication in the water.
To get the basic data for organic farming, the Chinese cabbage(Brassica pekinensis Rupr.) was cultivated in field of sandy loam soil and compost was applied at the ratios of 0, 20, 40, 80, 120ton per ha, respectively, with N-P-K elements. The yield of Chinese cabbage was maximum in the plot of compost 40t/ha application and it's weight was 3,783g/head. The chemical components of Chinese cabbage were no remarkable changes with the increasing amount of compost application. Content of organic matter in soil after experiment was finished was 39g/kg, total nitrogen was 2.2g/kg, available phosphorus was 1,927mg /kg. CEC was $11.4cmol^+/kg$, exchangable cations were K:0.5. Ca:0.6. Mg:0.3 and $Na:0.2cmol^+/kg$ in treatment of compost 120 t/ha.

This study was carried out to compare the soil profile development indices of Sinjeong series according to the distribution areas in Yeongnam district. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The soils studied were belong to fine loamy family of hilly residual soils derived from conglomerate. These soils were well drained and dominantly had 30-60% slopes, and used for forest. 2. The surfaces were typified by brownish red (5YR) or brownish yellow (10YR) loam, subsoils were clay loam of reddish brown (5YR) or reddish yellow (7.5YR) and the substrata were in dark reddish brown (5YR) or pink (7.5YR) sandy loam. 3. The indices of horizon development of the soils studied were from 0.18 to 0.38 and the index in illuvial horizons with clay films were over 0.36, that were higher than the others. The profile development indices were similar to each other ranging from 30.18 to 35.93. 4. Positive correlations were observed among horizon development indices and normalized values of structure, texture and consistences, but the relationship between profile development indices and consistences were not the same. 5. The amount of clay minerals formed in the soil horizons per 100g of parent materials were 1.1-1.6g and the rates of the clay leached were around 4.4-5.9%. 6. The sphericity and roundness of the gravels contained in the soils studied were 0.741 and 0.715, respectively. These similarity of "well rounded" gravels certify that the parent rocks were formed under similar environments.
To gain the basic informations on soil management practices by determination of the differences of soil genetic characteristics and the contents of soil moisture due to slope aspects of hilly land, this study was conducted at 1992 on sweet persimmon orchard soils derived from porphyry in southern of Korea. The results obtained were summarized as follows. The soils studied were belong to fine loamy family. The degree of soil development was greater in the north than other slope aspects and the solum thickness also the same. The soil chemical properties such as pH and exchangeable cations except for potassium were low generally in the orchards studied but the content of organic matter was lack in the summit and south aspect. The contents of Fe oxide and extractable Al were higher in the subsurface than surface. Fe, Al and clay indexes which indicate relative intensity of B horizon development were higher in the side slope than summit and the highest in the north slope. The rate of solum to B horizon was higher as about 1.5 for summit and west aspect which had thiner B horizon thickness compared to other aspect. North and west aspect had certainly more amount of soil water at drought season than other slope aspects and was lower the difference of soil water between the drought and wet seasons. Therfore, the soil management such as erosion control and irrigation at drought season should be practices differently due to slope aspect and soil chararteristics in the sloped land.

Fly ash treatment on soil had a strongly positive effect on the growth of soybean. Treatment of fly ash to the soil made soil pH improved and available phosphate content increased. Consequently yield of soybean increased. From germination to early growth stage, growth status and weight of the plant were unfavorably affected by fly ash and its effects on the leaf was quite serious specially in the plots treated with more than 10 MT/10a of bituminous fly ash. However after early stage, plant growth became vigorous in the order of 0 (control plot)<15<5<10 MT/10a. But at the late maturing stage, deteriorative symptoms such as leaf burn and drying were appeared from the plant treated with 10MT/10a and its symptoms were more serious with 15MT/10a. By anthracite fly ash treatment, the plant growth was greatly improved. As a result plant height and dry matter were in the order of 0<5<10<15MT/10a. Grain yield was in the order of 0<15<5< 10MT/10a treatment with bituminous fly ash and 0<5<10<15MT/10a treatment with anthracite fly ash. As a conclusion, recommandable amount of fly ash treatment for soybean would be 5-10 MT/10a with anthracite fly ash and 5 MT/10a with bituminous fly ash.
The objectives of this study were to compare nutrient natural input between thinned and unthinned natural hardwood stands at Mt. Joongwang, Pyongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. Throughfall, stemflow, A-layer and B-layer soil water as well as litterfall were sampled at two-week intervals during the period of June to October from 2002 to 2004. The amount of rainfall interception in thinned and unthinned natural hardwood stands was as 12% and 18%, respectively. The results indicated that there was no difference in annual nutrient input by rainfall between thinned and unthinned stands. $Na^+$, $Cl^-$ and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ concentrations of A-layer soil water in the unthinned stand were higher than those in the thinned stand. In the B-layer soil water, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ concentrations in the unthinned stand were higher than those in thinned stand. Mean annual litterfall input was $2,706kg\;ha^{-1}$ in unthinned stand and $2,589kg\;ha^{-1}$ in thinned stand. Total-N input from litterfall was $50.28kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in the unthinned stand and $36.81kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in the thinned stand, while there was no difference in exchangeable cation input from litterfall between thinned and unthinned stands. Thus, the difference in nutrient inputs except for N by throughfall, stemflow and litterfall between the two stands was not influenced by thinning.
To determine the effects of the silicate and the phosphate on the rice seedlings, 200 grams dry soil of the paddy field taken in the petri dish of 15cm diameter were treated with three levels of silicate(wollastonite) and phosphate. And the same amounts of nitrogen and potash were added constantly to each treated petridish. 100 grains of rice of which variety is Nongrim 25 were sown on each treated petridish simultaneously. After five times continuous culture, the rice plants and the soil were analyzed chemically and the results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Dry matter weight of the rice seedlings was significantly increased to the increased phosphate absorption, on the other hand that was decreased when the silica absorption was increased. 2. The higher the available phosphate content in the soil after the experiments, the lower the silica content as well as absorption by the plant, and the $SiO_2/P_2O_5$ ratio in the plant was significantly decreased. 3. By the wollastonite application, the available silica, the exchangeable calcium in the soil after the experiment, and the silica content as well as silica absorption and $SiO_2/P_2O_5$ ratio in the rice plant was significantly increased. 4. Higher correlation coefficient was obtained between the exchangeable calcium amount and the silica content or silica/phosphate ratio in the rice plant than the available silica content in soil itself. 5. It is possible to control the silica/phosphate ratio in plant by the control of the silica/phosphate ratio in soil. 6. The relation between the silica/phosphate ratio in plant (y) and the available silica/phosphate ratio in soil (x) was $y=0.665+1.420x-0.0825x^2$ and the goodness of fit(r) was 82%.

An empirical model of nitrous oxide emission from agricultural soil has been applied. It is based on the relationship between $N_2O$ and three soil parameters, soil mineral N(ammonium plus nitrate) content in the topsoil(0-15cm), soil water-field pore space, and soil temperature, determined in a study on clay loam and sandy loam at the pepper field in 2004. For comparisons between estimated and observed values of $N_2O$ emissions in the pepper field, it was investigated that $N_2O$ amount in the clay loam and sandy loam were overestimated as 12.2% and less estimated as 30%, respectively. However, $N_2O$ emissions were overestimated as 27.1% in the clay loam and 14.7% in the sandy loam from $N_2O$ gas samples collected once a week at the same time analyzing soil parameters. This modelling approach, based as it is well established and widely used soil measurements, has the potential to provide flux estimates from a much wider range of agricultural sites than would be possible by direct measurement of $N_2O$ emissions.
