Poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyimide(Kapton), and polypropylene surfaces were modified with argon low temperature plasma by RF glow discharge at 240m Torr, 40W to investigate the surface morphological changes due to the plasma treatment using atomic force microscopy(AFM). Analysis of the AFM images and Ra(average roughness) revealed that the plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the surfaces. The morphological changes and surface roughness, however, were different depending on material characteristics such as heat stability, presence of amorphous region, swelling phenomenon, and molecular structure of repeating unit. It was assumed that polypropylene due to its tertiary hydrogen was ablated easily compared to poly(ethylene terephthalate), and that polyimide was more resistant to the ablation than PET due to rigid skeleton of imide and stable phenyl ring structure.
The Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) coating is a new carbon-based amorphous material. Carbon ions in the plasma are electrically accelerated and collide with the substrate to form a thin film. This film has similar properties to diamonds such as high surface hardness, low coefficient of friction, corrosion resistance and durability that do not react with acids and bases. Also, since there is no thermal deformation, it can be printed at room temperature. and coated on almost all materials such as paper, polymer, ceramics and various metals even aspheric lens it is possible to mirror surface coating with excellent surface roughness. In this paper, we have analyzed the DLC film formed by Filtered Arc Ion Plating (Filtered AIP) process.
Photoelectrochemical water splitting is considered as a promising method of transforming solar energy into chemical energy stored in the type of hydrogen. An n-type $WO_3$ semiconductor is one of the most promising photoanodes for hydrogen production from water splitting. Films annealed at lower temperatures consisted of amorphous, whereas films annealed above $500^{\circ}C$ comprised solely of monoclinic $WO_3$. In this study, we observed photoactivity of $WO_3$ as increasing thickness of $WO_3$. And it shows good photoacivity as thickness increases. Also we tried to improve photoactivity through surface modification and bulk modification by using hydrogen treatment and conducting polymer. The photocurrent was measured in potentiostatic method with the three electrode system. A Pt wire and Ag / AgCl electrode were used as the counter electrode and the reference electrode, respectively. photocurrent-time (I-T) curve was measured at a bias potential of 0.79 V.
Creep characteristic is an important failure mechanism when evaluating engineering materials that are soft material as polymers or used as mechanical elements at high temperatures. One of the popular thermo-elastic polymers, Polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) which is used broadly for engineering polymer, as it has excellent mechanical and thermal properties compared to other polymers, was studied for creep characteristic at various level of stresses and temperatures. From the experimental results, the creep limit of PMMA at room temperature is 85 % of tensile strength. which is higher than that of PE (75%)at room temperature. Also the creep limits decreased to nil linearly as the temperatures increased, up to $120^{\circ}C$ of the melting point($267^{\circ}C$). Also the first and third stage among the three creep stages were non-existent nor were there any rupture failure which occurred for many metals at high temperatures.
The Polymerization of p-chlorophenyl propargyl ether (CPE) was carried out using various transition metal catalysts. The catalytic activity of $MoCl_{5}$-based catalysts was greater than that of $WCl_6$-based catalysts. $MoCl_5$ alone and $MoCl_{5}$-cocatalyst systems polymerized CPE very effectively to give a high yield of poly(CPE). In most cases, the polymer yield was quantitative and the average molecular weight $({\bar{M}}n)$ was in the range of 9,000 and 17,000. The NMR, IR, UV-visible spectra indicated that the present poly(CPE) has a linear conjugated polyene structure having p-chlorophenyl oxymethylene substituent. The poly(CPE) was mostly dark-brown colored powder and was completely soluble in various organic solvents such as chloroform, methylene chloride, THF, chlorobenzene, etc. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the present poly(CPE) is amorphous.
A series of new NLO-active poly(4-nitrophenylallylamine) derivatives was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of several substituted 4-nitrohalobenzenes and poly(allylamine hydrochloride). All polymers obtained were amorphous and their glass transition temperatures (Tg) were observed around 148-160 ℃. For each of these polymers, their specific Tg values were dependent on characteristic electronic structures. UV-visible absorption spectra showed maximum absorption intensity at 355-393 nm for π-π* transition of alkylaminonitrophenyl groups. The χ(2)value of poly(4-nitrophenylallylamine), as determined by the second harmonic generation at 1064 nm, for a thin polymer film poled at an elevated temperature, was 1.4x10-8esu. The third-order NLO properties of poly(4-nitrophenylallylamine) derivatives were evaluated through measurement of degenerate four-wave mixing technique and χ(3) coefficient in the range of 2.7~3.2x10-12 esu at 602 nm was found with 400 fs laser pulses.
The polyaniline films with various insoluble parts are fabricated. The oxidation state (1-y) of these polyaniline is 0.53 and 0.54, respectively. To control the interchain and intrachain interaction of the polymer, the polyaniline films are stretched with appropriate ratio. The insoluble part of polyaniline synthesized at room temperature (low molecular weight) is 12%-76% and that of polyaniline synthesized at 0 'IC (intermediate molecular weight) is 65%-89%. The low molecular weight polyaniline films with various drawing ratios have amorphous structure. In the intermediate weight polyaniline films, the crystallinity of films increases with drawing ratio as well as insoluble part. The difference of the insoluble part affects electrical conductivity which is increased dramatically with draw ratio. In particular, the higher insoluble part caused greater increase in electrical conductivity.
A high-hardness tool material is required to reduce extreme abrasive wear when drilling carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Single-crystal diamond is the hardest material in the world, but it is very expensive to be used as a cutting tool. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is a diamond grit fused at a high temperature and pressure, and diamond-like carbon (DLC) is an amorphous carbon with high hardness. This study compares DLC coatings and PCD inserts to conventional TiAlN-coated tungsten carbide drills. In fiberglass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer drilling, the tool wear of DLC-coated carbide was approximately half that of TiAlN-coated tools, and slight tool wear occurred in the case of PCD insert end drills.
