  • This research concerns the characteristics of tank barrel inner flow according to the barrel length and the pressure of ammunition when fired. By analyzing the flow characteristics of the bore evacuator according to barrel length and ammunition pressure regarding ammunition design, it is possible to prevent the flareback phenomenon that may occur during ammunition operation. Through bore evacuator flow analysis by barrel length and ammunition pressure, we identified key design factors concerning barrel and ammunition compatibility including speed, accuracy, penetration performance and range. Test results found if barrel length is long and ammunition pressure is low, bore evacuator operation time is slow. Therefore, there is a high probability that propellant gas will enter the battle vehicle. Therefore, the correlation analysis method of bore evacuator flow characteristics based on barrel length and ammunition pressure is considered as a primary method to improve operational performance. When designing new ammunition, the correlation analysis method will be used to determine ammunition weight and select the propellant pressure.

  • It is well known that nitroglycerin(NG) may evaporate and migrate from the triple base propellant grains in storage. This physical process makes it double base environment to the CCC(combustible cartridge case) which is based on nitrocellulose(NC) without NG. Meanwhile, it is not appropriate to use diphenylamine(DPA) as a stabilizer for CCC in this double base environment because of incompatibility between DPA and NG. So we estimated the shelf life to study the effect of NG migration from propellant to CCC by following the procedures in the STANAG 4257. And we found out that CCC with ethylcentralite(ECL) has 7.5 years longer shelf life than with DPA, when NG migrates to CCC from triple base propellant grains.

  • The purpose of this study is to separate nitrocellulose from 175 mm ammunition propellant by environmentally responsible recovery method. Recovery of nitrocellulose from obsolete ammunition is much more desirable than destruction since it can be reused in the several purpose. In spite of durable demilitarization of obsolete ammunition, the current holding amount of obsolete ammunition is gradually increasing and accumulated. The existing demilitarization methods, such as incineration and priming are strictly restricted for the noise, dust, oscillation and air and soil pollution. This study is focused on the separation of nitrocellulose by environmentally responsible recovery method by the solubility difference of nitrocellulose in nonpolar solvent. The purity of an extracted nitrocellulose was analysed by IR and TLC method and was clarified as very high.

  • This study aims to develop a regression model using data from the Ammunition Stockpile Reliability Program (ASRP) to predict the shelf life of 81mm mortar high-explosive shells. Ammunition is a single-use item that is discarded after use, and its quality is managed through sampling inspections. In particular, shelf life is closely related to the performance of the propellant. This research seeks to predict the shelf life of ammunition using a regression model. The experiment was conducted using 107 ASRP data points. The dependent variable was 'Storage Period', while the independent variables were 'Mean Ammunition Velocity,' 'Standard Deviation of Mean Ammunition Velocity,' and 'Stabilizer'. The explanatory power of the regression model was an R-squared value of 0.662. The results indicated that it takes approximately 55 years for the storage grade to change from A to C and about 62 years to change from C to D. The proposed model enhances the reliability of ammunition management, prevents unnecessary disposal, and contributes to the efficient use of defense resources. However, the model's explanatory power is somewhat limited due to the small dataset. Future research is expected to improve the model with additional data collection. Expanding the research to other types of ammunition may further aid in improving the military's ammunition management system.

  • Domestic 105mm HE (High Explosive) shell is composed of three parts that are Fuze, Projectile and Propellants. Among three parts, propelling charge of propellants part consists of single base propellants. It has been known that the lifespan of single base propellants is affected by a storage period. These are because Nitrocellulose (NC) which is the main component of propelling gunpowder can be naturally decomposed to unstable substances similar with other nitric acid ester. Even though it cannot be prevented fundamentally from being disassembled, a decomposition product ($NO_2$, $NO_3$, and $HNO_3$) and tranquillizer DPA (Diphenylamine) having high reactivity are added into a propellant to restrain induction of automatic catalysis by a decomposition product. The decay rate of the tranquillizer is also affected by a production rate of the decomposition product of NC. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the Self-Life is required to ensure against risks such as explosion. Hereupon, this paper presents a new methodology to estimate the shelf-life of single base propellants using data of ASRP (Ammunition Stockpile Reliability Program) to domestic 105mm HE (propelling charge of propellants part). We selected four attributes that are inferred to have influence on distribution of the DPA amount in a propellant from the ASRP dataset through data mining processes. Then the selected attributes were used as independent variables in a regression analysis in order to estimate the shelf-life of single base propellants.

  • The burning rates of combustible cartridge cases(CCCs) of 120mm kinetic energy ammunition were measured by CBT(Closed Bomb Tester). The burning coefficient was 1.4 for CCC fabricated by Post Impregnation(PI) process, and 1.0 for that by Beater Additive(BA) process. The BA process CCC showed the fixed burning coefficient of 1.0 in spite of changing the composition of CCC. As the Korean Future Main Battle Tank is requiring the high penetration performance compared with that of KlAl tank ammunition(K276), CCC was designed to have higher impetus composition than that of K276 composition(525J/g). The optimum impetus was 600J/g when considering the increases of pressure and muzzle velocity with increasing impetus. When impetus of CCC by changing the composition increased from 525J/g to 600J/g, the muzzle velocity of 12m/s at pressure increase of 3500psi increased in case of using SCDB propellant.

  • This study examined the operation of a pressure gauge for measuring the internal pressure of a barrel. During the ammunition performance evaluation test, the internal pressure of the barrel was measured mainly using a copper crusher gauge. The internal piezo gauge (IPG) was used to replace the pressure measurement method, and the test results were analyzed to verify the operability of the IPG. For verification, actual shooting test data were used, and a t-test was used to analyze the results. The 155MM KH179 and M119 series propellant were used for the test equipment and ammunition. The results confirmed that there was no difference between the mean values of the two data results at a significance level of 5% for the data values between the copper gauge and the IPG. The use of the IPG was verified by replacing the existing copper gauge to measure the internal pressure of the barrel, and it was confirmed that the application width could be widened in terms of diversity of test measurement methods. Based on the results of this test, it can be applied to the compression measurement test of various types of ammunition in addition to the propellant charges.

  • Single-base propellants contain a single energetic component: nitrocellulose. Accurate predictions of propellant shelf-life should result in cost savings in terms of human and material resources. This study derived an optimized kinetic model reaction order that described stabilizer consumption and estimated propellant shelf-life. High temperature accelerated aging tests gave an optimum reaction order value of 1.15481, from which the minimum standard error of a linear regression estimate of 16.284 was obtained. At normal storage temperature of $21-30^{\circ}C$, propellants should have a safe shelf-life of 140 years, and a minimum of 35 years. It is necessary to consider the temperature range in ammunition storage areas to predict propellant shelf-life more accurately.

  • Muzzle Velocity is one of the most important measurement items for evaluation of ammunition. The muzzle velocity is defined as the velocity when the projectile leaves the muzzle. Particularly, since the muzzle velocity is closely related to the performance of the propellant, precise measurement of muzzle velocity is required. Doppler radar is used to measure the muzzle velocity, but the quality of Doppler radar signal depends on the test site environment. In this paper, a method to remove the clutter that degrades the signal quality of Doppler radar by improving the structure of the test site and the signal processing method is suggested. For the application of the improved signal processing method, a program for acquiring Doppler radar's raw Doppler data was created. Statistical verification of the velocity data obtained through the improvement of the test site structure and signal processing method proved that the proposed method is effective for the removal of clutter as compared with the existing method.

  • In this paper, the development of unique model of the 2.75 inch rocket propulsion system is described. Recently developed korean 2.75 inch rocket propulsion system shows the improvement of a flame stability resulted from a change in the configuration of propellant grain, and of an incidental ignition protection function using the EMI(electromagnetic interference) filter on ignition system. Moreover it is shown that a directional flight stability is improved by increasing the number of fins and changing the nozzle configuration. Static firing test and thermal shock test were conducted for the validation before flight, and flight test of 210 rounds of rockets was conducted to verify the trajectory uniformity. In addition, intellectual property issues can be overcome with the unique korean 2.75 inch rocket motor as well as the performance improvement.
