Considering the fuel consumption of car, a light structure of aluminum alloys is desired for car body nowadays. However, fusion welding of aluminum alloys has some problems of reduction of joint efficiency, porosity formation and hot cracking. ill the present work, investigation to improve the joint performance of laser welded joint has been carried out by addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr to A6N01 alloy welds. Aluminum alloy plate of 2.0mm in thickness with filler metal bar was welded by twin beam Nd:YAG laser facility (total power:5kW). The filler metals were prepared by changing the chemical compositions for adding the elements into the weld metal. Thirteen filler metal bars were prepared and pre-placed into the base metal before welding. Ar gas shielding with a flow rate of 10 l/min was used. The defocusing distance is kept at 0 mm. At travel speeds of 3 to 9 m/min and at laser power of 5kW (front beam 2kW rear beam 3kW), full penetration welds were obtained, whereas at travel speeds of 12 to 18 m/min and same power, partial penetration was observed. The joint efficiency of laser-welded joint was improved by the addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr due to the solid solution hardening, grain refining and precipitation hardening. The type of hardening has been further considered by metallurgical examination.
Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by fine steel wires were fabricated by squeeze casting process. Preforms made of fine steel wires were prepared with different surface conditions, namely uncoated(TN), carbo-nitriding treated(TT), and brass coated(TA). Squeeze casting were performed under the pressure of $1500kg/cm^2$ for 3min. during solidification, and pouring temp. of the melt being $750^{\circ}C$ and the steel mold being preheated at $250^{\circ}C$. Microstructural characteristics were evaluated, particularly concerned with the effect of the surface conditions of the preforms. The results obtained from this study are like these. TN specimens show partially non-wetted regions, due to easy formation of oxides on the surface of the fine steel wires. TT specimens show no interfacial reaction between the steel wires and the aluminum alloy matrix, possibly due to the formation of carbo-nitrided zone on the surface of the steel wires. TA specimens show excellent wettabillity between the reinforced steel wires and the aluminum alloy matrix and very thin interfacial zone is formed between them. During the solution hardening treatment of TA specimens, thickness of the interfacial reaction zones were increased with the solution treating time. TA specimens show typical ductile fracture in tensile test, but TT specimens show brittle fracture possibly due to the formation of the brittle hard surface on the steel wires during carbo-nitriding treatments. TA specimens which were reinforced with 40 vol.% of the fine steel wires exhibit high tensile strength of $77.1kgf/mm^2$ and impact value of $8.1kgf-m/cm^2$.

Considering the fuel consumption of car, a light structure of aluminum alloys is desired fer car body nowadays. However, fusion welding of aluminum alloys has some problems of reduction of joint efficiency, porosity formation and hot cracking. In the present work, investigation to improve the joint performance of laser welded joint has been carried out by addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr to A6NO 1 alloy welds. Aluminum alloy plate of 2.Omm in thickness with filler metal bar was welded by twin beam Nd: YAG laser facility (total power: 5kW). The filler metals were prepared by changing the chemical compositions for adding the elements into the weld metal. Thirteen filler metal bars were prepared and pre-placed into the base metal before welding. Ar gas shielding with a flow rate of 10 1/min was used. The defocusing distance is kept at 0 mm. At travel speeds off 3 to 9 and at laser power of 5kW (front beam 2kW rear beam 3kW), full penetration welds were obtained, whereas at travel speeds of 12 to 18 m/min and same power, partial penetration was observed. The joint efficiency of laser-welded joint was improved by the addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr due to the solid solution hardening, grain refining and precipitation hardening. Pulse TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is often considered the most difficult of all the welding processes commonly used in industry. Because the welder must maintain a short arc length, great care and skill are required to prevent contact between the electrode and the workpiece. Pulse TIG welding is most commonly used to weld thin sections of stainless steel, non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys. It is significantly slower than most other welding techniques and comparatively more complex and difficult to master as it requires greater welder dexterity than MIG or stick welding. The problems associated with manual TIG welding includes undercutting, tungsten inclusions, porosity, Heat affected zone cracks and also the adverse effect on health of welding gun operator due to amount of tungsten fumes produced during the welding process. This brings the necessity of automation. Hence, In this paper an attempt has been made to build a customerized setup of Pulse TIG welding based on through review of Pulse TIG welding parameters. The cost associated for making automated TIG is found to be low as compared to SPM (Special Purpose machines) available in the market.
New lasers such as high power, high brightness and short wavelength laser are using diverse industry. Also new technologies are developing actively to solve various issues such as spattering, process monitoring, deep penetration and key-hole stability. ICALEO is the international congress where recent technology for laser material processing and laser system are present. At 2014, it was held at San Diego in USA and more than 260 papers were presented from 28 country. The effect of the laser beam shape such as Gaussian like and top-hat was investigated on acoustic emission signal and pore formation in welding. Inline penetration depth was measured with ICI(Inline Coherent Imaging) technique and the data was verified with real time X-ray image on laser welding. The laser welding performance at low pressure environment was evaluated for the thick plate alloy steel. UV laser was used to weld various metals such as Cu, Aluminum, steel and stainless steel. The effect of the wavelength of the laser on the formation of the wave at the wall of the key-hole front and the absorptivity was investigated.
Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is receiving more recognition as a possible and effective solution for joining automotive body panels and structures, particularly for aluminum parts and dissimilar parts. In this study, static strength and fatigue tests were conducted using coach-peel and cross-tension specimens with Al-5052 plates for evaluation of fatigue strength of the SPR joints. For the static experiment results, the fracture modes are classified into pull-out fracture due to influence of plastic deformation of joining area. During the fatigue tests for the coach-peel and cross-tension specimens with Al-5052, interface failure mode occurred on the top substrate close to the rivet head in the most cycle region. There were relationship between applied load amplitude $P_{amp}$ and life time of cycle N, $P_{amp}=715.5{\times}N^{-0.166}$ and $P_{amp}=1967.3{\times}N^{-0.162}$ were for the coach-peel and cross- tension specimens, respectively. The finite element analysis results for specimens were adopted for the parameters of fatigue lifetime prediction. The relation between SWT fatigue parameter and number of cycles was found to be $SWT=192.8N_f^{-0.44}$.
Since new types of vehicles or structures made from thin aluminum alloy are under rapid development and some products are already on the market, welding of aluminium sheet is increasing. MIG(Metal Inert Gas), MIG-Pulse, TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding are the typical Ai welding. MIG welding has the advantage of high speed, but it is difficult to apply to the thin plate, because of bum-through by the high heat input and spatter. MIG-Pulse welding can weld without spatter and burn-through, but when the gap exists at the welding joint, there is quite a possibility of bum-through. TIG welding is difficult to weld at a high speed. AC Pulse welding alternates between DCEP(Direct Current Electrode Positive) and DCEN(Direct Current Electrode Negative). DCEN is higher wire melting rate than DCEP, while lower temperature of droplet than DCEP. In AC Pulse welding, far fixed welding current, wire melting rate increases as the EN ratio increases. For fixed wire feed rate, welding current decreases as the EN ratio increases. Because of these features, the temperature of droplet, the depth of penetration, the width of bead decrease and the reinforcement height increases as EN ratio increases, and these are able to weld at a high speed, lower heat input. It is the purpose of this study that design of AC pulse current waveform for MIG welding of Al sheet and estimation of output characteristic.
In automobile industry, it is necessary to reduce the weight from the view point of energy and environmental problems in these days. One of the ways for weight reduction is using adhesive aluminum structures. In this study, ultrasonic signals reflected from the adhesively bonded joint layer are used to evaluate the adhesively bonded joints. FFT is performed to determine bond-layer parameters such as effective thickness and frequency for adhesively bonded joint Al 6061 plates in comparison with the measured and theoretical ratios. And the parameters of ultrasonic wave and the J-integral are investigated to evaluate the adhesively bonded joint strength by DCB specimens.
Al6082-T6 is widely used because of its corrosion resistance and excellent strength. HAZ softening occurs in MIG welding process for this aluminium alloys because this aluminium alloy is heated to higher temperature than its aging temperature during welding. Therefore, low heat input and minimum standard deviation of heat input are required for narrow HAZ width and, for higher strength of welds. In this study, Al6082-T6 was used to examine for HAZ softening with various heat input in aluminium MIG welding. For weldments, micro hardness was measured and tensile test was carried out. Minimum hardness was increased at high speed welding such as 80cm/min and 120cm/min in welding speed comparing with 40cm/min. Also, in case of high speed welding such as 80cm/min and 120cm/min, tensile strength of weldments was increased about 10% comparing with low speed welding(40cm/min).
