To study the effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the mechanical properties and failure modes of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) beam, especially when the aluminum foam core is made in aluminum alloy and the face sheet thickness is less than 1.5 mm, three-point bending tests were investigated experimentally by using WDW-50E electronic universal tensile testing machine. Load-displacement curves were recorded to understand the mechanical response and photographs were taken to capture the deformation process of the composite structures. Results demonstrated that when foam core was combined with face-sheet thickness of 0.8 mm, its carrying capacity improved with the increase of core density. But when the thickness of face-sheet increased from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, result was opposite. For AFS with the same core density, their carrying capacity increased with the face-sheet thickness, but failure modes of thin face-sheet AFS were completely different from the thick face-sheet AFS. There were three failure modes in the present research: yield damage of both core and bottom face-sheet (Failure mode I), yield damage of foam core (Failure mode II), debonding between the adhesive interface (Failure mode III).
In this work, the surface treatment of aluminum/composites (graphite-epoxy composites) was investigated. The surface of composites was treated by $Ar^{+}$ ion beam under oxygen environment. The surface of aluminum was treated by DC plasma. The optimal condition of surface treatment for the composites was determined by measuring the contact angle as a function of ion dose. The optimal treatment condition of the aluminum was determined by measuring the contact angle and T-peel strength as a function of mixture ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas. The mixture ratios used were 1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, and 9:1. The results showed that the contact angle of composites decreased from$ 81^{\circ}$ to $8^{\circ}$ as the ion dose increased from zero to $1$\times$10^{17}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The optimal condition of ion dose was $1$\times$10^{16}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The results also showed that the contact angle of aluminum was a minimum for the mixture ratio of 5:5. Similarly, the T-peel strength was a maximum for the mixture ratio of 5:5, which indicates that the optimal condition of mixture ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas is 5:5.
This paper examines the crack growth behavior of 7075-T651 and 5052-H32 aluminum alloys for variable load within tensile load range condition. The cantilever beam type specimen with a chevron notch is used in this study. The crack growth and closure are investgated by compliance method. The applied initial stress ratio is R=0.3 and variable load are R=0.65, 0.46. Crack length, stress intensity factor range, ratio of effective stress intensity factor range and crack growth rate etc. are inspected with fracture mechanics estimate.
The flexural vibration of aluminum beams with active and passive constrained-layer damping has been investigated experimentally to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity. Piezoelectric film is used as sensor and piezoceramic as actuator for negative velocity feedback control. This paper shows the effectiveness of active constrained-layer damping treatment through experiment, and we have carried out an experiment to study effect of beam thickness.
The impact beam, a beam-shaped reinforcement installed horizontally between the inside and outside panels of car doors, is gaining importance as a solution to meet the regulations on side collision of vehicles. In order to minimize pelvis injury which is the biggest injury happening to the driver and passengers when a vehicle is subject to side collision, energy absorption at the door impact beam should be maximized. For the inner panel, the thrust into the inside of the vehicle must be minimized. The impact beam should be as light as possible so that the extent of pelvis injury to the driver and passenger during side collision of the vehicle is minimal. To achieve this, the weight of the impact beam, has to be optimized. In this study, we perform a design analysis with a goal to reduce the weight of the current impact design by 30% while ensuring stability, reliability, and comparison data of the impact beam for mass production. We conduct three-point bending stress experiments on conventional impact beams and analyze the results. In addition, we use a side-door collision test apparatus to test the performance of beams made of three (different materials: steel, aluminum, and composite beams).
This paper focuses on large deflection static behavior of edge cracked simple supported beams subjected to a non-follower transversal point load at the midpoint of the beam by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. The cross section of the beam is circular. The cracked beam is modeled as an assembly of two sub-beams connected through a massless elastic rotational spring. It is known that large deflection problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. The considered highly nonlinear problem is solved considering full geometric non-linearity by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. There is no restriction on the magnitudes of deflections and rotations in contradistinction to von-Karman strain displacement relations of the beam. The beams considered in numerical examples are made of Aluminum. In the study, the effects of the location of crack and the depth of the crack on the non-linear static response of the beam are investigated in detail. The relationships between deflections, end rotational angles, end constraint forces, deflection configuration, Cauchy stresses of the edge-cracked beams and load rising are illustrated in detail in nonlinear case. Also, the difference between the geometrically linear and nonlinear analysis of edge-cracked beam is investigated in detail.
In this research, an active vibration suppression of a smart beam having piezoelectric sensor and actuators is investigated by designing separate controllers comprising a linear quadratic regulator and a neural network. Firstly, design of a smart beam which consists of a cantilever aluminum beam with surface bonded piezoelectric patches and a designed mechanism having a micro servomotor with a mass attached arm for obtaining variations in the frequency response function are presented. Secondly, the frequency response functions of the smart beam are investigated experimentally by using different piezoelectric patch combinations and the analytical models of the smart beam around its first resonance frequency region for various servomotor arm angle configurations are obtained. Then, a linear quadratic regulator controller is designed and used to simulate the suppression of free and forced vibrations which are performed both in time and frequency domain. In parallel to simulations, experiments are conducted to observe the closed loop behavior of the smart beam and the results are compared as well. Finally, active vibration suppression of the smart beam is investigated by using a linear controller with a neural network based adaptive element which is designed for the purpose of overcoming the undesired consequences due to variations in the real system.
We fabricated GaN nanopores m the etching process of anodic oxidation of aluminum. The aluminum was deposited by using E-beam evaporator on p-type GaN. After the aluminum was anodized GaN structure was exposed to the electric field with the oxidat species. The fabricated nanopore structure provides the enhanced intensity of light emission at the wavelengths 470 nm. We investigated the structure of the GaN nanopores from FE-SEM and EDS measurements.
In this study, welding distortion analysis is performed for various design of tube shape structures which are assembled with aluminum sheet metal. Aluminum 5052 plates of 1mm thickness are used to analyze. An efficient keyhole model, as a welding heat source, is used for the prediction of full penetration weld size and shape which is required for the thermal analysis. The thermal and mechanical material properties are considered as temperature dependent functions, due to the high temperature variations during the welding. The numerical model is calculated by using a commercial software and evaluated with the experiments. The calculation results could make a comparative study in the view of distortion for the various size and shape of structure.
