Influence of Bonding Strength on Surface Pattern in Bonding of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic and Metal (탄소 섬유 강화 플라스틱과 금속의 접합에서 표면 패턴에 따른 접합 강도 영향)

  • The effect of the surface profile on CFRP and aluminum metal bonding was studied. A small number of steps were made on the aluminum surface, and the shear stress and elongation were measured using a shear test after bonding with an autoclave method. As the number of surface steps increased, the shear stress and elongation increased. The surface bonding strength increased because of the effect of the mechanical and chemical bonding. When the number of effective stages was exceeded, the shear strength decreased again due to the aspect ratio of the step and the reduction of the penetration effect of the resin into the groove.

  • An analytical study was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior of pre-cracked aluminum plates repaired with asymmetric bonded composite patch. For single-sided repairs, due to the asymmetry and the presence of out-of-plane bending, crack front shape would become skewed curvilinear started from a uniform through-crack profile, as observed from previous studies. In this study, the fatigue analysis of single-sided repairs considering crack front shape development was conducted by implementing three-dimensional successive finite element method coupled with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept, which enables the growing crack front to be directly traced and modeled in a step by step way. Through conducting present analysis technique, crack path of the patched plate as well as the fatigue life was evaluated with sufficient accuracy. The analytical predictions of both the crack front shape evolution and the fatigue life were in good agreement with the experimental observations.

  • An important component of a cooling tower is an axial fan, and there happens distortion in its shape which brings significant loss of efficiency. In this paper, a surface profile measuring system for large size axial fan of cooling towers is developed. A laser sensor is used as a measuring device and aluminum profiles and stepping motors are engaged into the system as frame structure and driving devices respectively. The measuring data are compared to the design data to compute the distortion of the axial fans. Two types of errors, axial and twist errors, are used to represent the precision of axial fan distortion. Genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem during computing the precision. Results are displayed three dimensionally in a solid-modeler as well as 2-D drawings to help users find it with ease.

  • Hill's anisotropy theory and isotropy theory under the deformed profile assumed two separate cases(that is circular and ellipitical) are applied to predict the plastic deformation characteristics of bulge, the strain and polar height under instability condition, using thin square diaphragms of stainless steel, mild steel, brass, copper and aluminum. In this study it was found that the pressure-polar height curves, and the polar height-the polar radius of curvature curve, under anisotropy theory and isotropy theory, assuming a circle profile, agree well with the experimental results, and the equivalent strains of the instability condition under anisotropy theory are better good agreement with the experimental results than those of the instability condition under isotropy theory. Beside, FLCo(plane Strain Intercept) obtained by Bethlehem FLC method and standard FLC method (modified) agree well with the experimental result.

Feasibility study of wide-band low-profile ultrasonic sensor with flexible piezoelectric paint

  • This paper presents a feasibility study of flexible piezoelectric paint for use in wide-band low-profile surface-mount or embeddable ultrasonic sensor for in situ structural health monitoring. Piezoelectric paint is a piezoelectric composite with 0-3 connectivity. Because of its ease of application, piezoelectric paint can be readily fabricated into sensing element with complex pattern. This study examines the characteristics of piezoelectric paint in acoustic emission signal and ultrasonic guided wave sensing. A series of ultrasonic tests including pitch catch and pencil break tests were performed to validate the ultrasonic wave sensing capability of piezoelectric paint. The results of finite element simulation of ultrasonic wave propagation, and acoustic emission generated by a pencil lead break on an aluminum plate are also presented in this paper along with corresponding experimental data. Based on the preliminary experimental results, the piezoelectric paint appears to offer a promising sensing material for use in real-time monitoring of crack initiation and propagation in both metallic and composite structures.

  • The present study is concerned with the hydrostatic extrusion process of copper-clad aluminium bar to investigate the basic flow characteristics. Considering the bonding mechanism of bi-metal contact surface as cold pressure welding, the normal pressure and the contact surface expansion are selected as process parameters governing the bonding condition. The critical pressure required for the bonding at the interface is obtained by solving a "local extrusion" using a slip line meyhod. A viscoplastic finite element method is used to analyze the steady state extrusion process. The boundary profile of bi-metal rod is predicted by tracking a particle path adjacent to interface surface. The variations of contact surface area and the normal pressure along the interface profile are predicted and compared to those by experiments.

Considering the bonding mechanism of bi-metal contact surface as cold pressure welding the normal pressure and the contact surface expansion are selected as process parameters governing the bonding conditions, in this study the critical normal pressure required for the local extrusion-the protrusion of virgin surfaces by the surface expansion at the interface-is obtained using a slip line method and is then used as a criteron for the bonding. A rigid plastic finite element method is used to analyze the steady state extrusion process. The interface profile of bi-metal rod is predicted by tracking the paths of two particles adja-process. The contact surface area ration and the normal pressure along the interface are calculated and compared to the critical normal pressure to check bonding. It is found that the model predictions are generally in good agreement with the experimental observations. The compar-isons of the extrusion pressure and interface profile by the finite element with those by experi-ments are also given.

ORENTGENOGRAPHIC STUDIES ON THE SOFT TISSUE PROFILE (악안면 연조직에 관한 X선학적 연구)

  • Modern orthodontics implies not only occlusal excellence, but also the positioning of teeth to produce optimal facial harmony for the individual patients. Several methods have been used in the study of facial height, width and depth were made from living subjects. These methods, however, complicate to control the subjects, therefore many investigators have used profile cephalometric technics. Practically, cephalometric technics were used m orthodontic treatment, maxillo-facial surgery and anthropometric studies. Author was studied to investigate the normal standards of soft tissue profile in Korean adolescences. The subjects consisted of 53 males and 54 females from 17 to 22 years of age and with normal occlusion and acceptable profile. Aluminum filter was designed to obtain both hard and soft tissue structures on a single film. Eight profile landmarks were plotted and drawn on the tracings of all cephalograms and eighteen depth, height and angles were measured from each landmarks of the cephalograms. The following conclusIOns were obtained from this studies; 1. Total facial convexity was 170. 75 in males and females samples and lower facial and: labiomandibular convexity were each of 141.44, 171.05. 2. Maxillary and mandibular sulcus angulations were 137.61, 129.52 and upper and lower lip inclinations were each of 123.26 and 49.56 in male and females. 3. Soft tissue depth of several points were as follows; Subnasale 18.74㎜ in males and 16.65㎜ in females Pogonion 13.40㎜ in males and 13.07㎜ in females upper lip 14.06㎜ in males and 11.91㎜ in females . lower lip 15.46㎜, 13.63㎜ in males and females 4. The protrusion of nose were 16.28㎜ in males and 15.56㎜ in females 5. The vertical length of upper and lower lips were 25.67㎜, 52.96㎜ and the lip posture was indicated 93.43 per cent (closed state) in centric occlusions.

  • Employing screen printing technology, aluminum is applied to the back side of the n-type silicon wafer to see the effect of the heat treatment parameters on the Voc of the solar cell, Heat treatment at $850^{\circ}C$ produces the highest Voc among various heat treatment conditions. Heat treatment at the temperatures higher than $850^{\circ}C$ results in lower Voc, which is due to the destruction of the Al-Si alloy emitter layer. The destruction of Al-Si layer observed to be caused by the vigorous movement of silicon atoms toward aluminum layer during the heat treatment.

Detection of Second-Layer Corrosion in Aging Aircraft

  • The Compton backscatter technique has been applied to lap-joint in aircraft structure in order to determine mass loss due to exfoliative corrosion of the aluminum alloy sheet skin. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from Compton backscatter A-scan including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer, and the sealant. A Compton backscattering imaging system has been also developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft using a specially designed slit-type camera. The camera is to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the layered structure is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The theoretical model of the Compton scattering based on Boltzmann transport theory is presented for quantitative characterization of exfoliative corrosion through deconvolution procedure using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method. It produces practical information such as location and width of planar corrosion in layered structures of aircraft, which generally cannot be detected by conventional NDE techniques such as the ultrasonic method.
