Alumina composite reinforced by chopped alumina fiber was fabricated by filter-pressing the fiber slurry followed by the infiltration of alumina slurry. The chopped fiber was coated with nickel by electroless plating method. The green samples were densified by hot-pressing. Microstructures were studied by SEM and the mechanical properties such as bending strength and fracture toughness were measured. The resulting mechanical properties were analyzed in relation with processing parameters such as preform density and resulting microstructures. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer but without Ni inclusion showed brittle fracture mode due to the direct contact between matrix and fiber. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer and Ni inclusion in the matrix which is introduced by high applied pressure during specimen preparation showed non-brittle fracture mode due to the fiber pull-out and dutile phases in the matrix.
The alumina fiber was obtained by extruding the TEA complexed polymeric sol, synthesized by the alkoxide sol-gel method, through nozzle. The purpose of this study was to investigate the properties of fiber spun by TEA complexed sol. The analysis of sol indicated that TEA was bonded at alkoxide precursor and the optimum molar ratio for spinning was 0.5 mole of TEA, 3 mole of H2O. The cross section of the fiber from circular nozzle was not circular but oval, which indicated that the shape of nozzle did not affect the shape of fiber. The diameter of the fiber was about 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the state of dried gel fiber, 60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in calcined fiber, and the tensile strength of the fiber calcined at 90$0^{\circ}C$ was 2.1$\times$108 Pa.
The wear properties of the alumina short fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by hot pressing was studied at the room temperature and $350^{\circ}C.$ The wear loss of various specimens having different constituent and different density was examined by a pin-on-disc type wear testing machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the worn surface morphology and the analysis of the composition on the worn surfaces. Since the reinforced effect of the alumina fiber on the wear resistance was dependent on the strength of alloy matrix, the pressureless sintered composites having a lower matrix strength showed a marked increase in wear resistance by the fiber reinforcement. As the wear condition became severe, the fiber reinforcement was more effective. The delamination on the wear surface was observed in the pressureless sintered specimens having pores which are related to the initiation and the propagation of cracks. However, the wear mechanism acting on a big failure area was not found on the wear surfaces of the hot pressed specimens having a few pores.
The alumina hollow fiber membranes were prepared by spinning and sintering a polymer solution containing suspended alumina powders. For determine pore structure of hollow fiber membranes formed by different solvent-nonsolvent interaction rate, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), triethylphosphite (TEP) were prepared in dope solution by solvent, polyethersulfone (PESf) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a polymer binder and additive. The pore structure of hollow fiber membranes was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The alumina hollow fiber membranes prepared by DMSO, DMAc were had the asymmetric structure mixed sponge-like and finger-like morphology, while TEP solvent were had single sponge-like structure. The prepared hollow fiber membranes were analyzed gas permeation and mechanical strength experiment also. The hollow fiber membrane having single sponge-like structure was had high gas permeation performance. On the contrary to this, more finger-like morphology was less gas permeation performance.
This study has been investigated to apply fiber reinforced composites instead of asbestos as a friction material. the reinforced used was E-glass fiber and binder resin was phenol having good mechanical properties and heat resistance. And it has been also investigated the effect of molding conditions and some additives such and carbon black, alumina and rubber powder in E-glass fiber/phenol resin composite on the friction on the friction and wear characteristics. As a result, it was found that the molding conditions of E-glass fiber/phenol resin composites for friction materials had to be different from those of phenol resin and was found that the wear rate of E-glass fiber/phenol resin composites added alumina powder was higher than of composites added carbon black in the same wear distance. And it was found that friction coefficient of E-glass/phenol resin composites added carbon black was decreased and that of the composites added the powder of natural rubber and ABS rubber were increased compared to the composites.
In order to investigate the effect of the ceramic reinforcements on the wear properties of aluminum bronze composites, Cu-8wt%Al aluminum bronze alloys reinforced with the Saffil alumina short fiber were produced by the powder metallurgical method and tested by a pin-ondisc wear testing machine. The wear surfaces of the pin specimens and discs, wear debris, and the cross sections of the wear specimens were observed by SEM. The wear mechanism according to various wear conditions and the change of microstructure in the composites were also discussed. In the results, the reinforcement of the composites with alumina short fiber was very effective at the higher applied load over 10N. The material transportation to the counter disc was observed in the alloy specimens without reinforcements. However, the composites reinforced with ceramic particles and fibers showed the resistance against the material transportation.
In this study, aluminum sec-butoxide, aluminum iso-propoxide were mixed with alcohol such as, secbutanol, iso-propanol. And then Acetyl Acetone, water were added to make Acetyl bond and OH bond. After that, Polymeric alumina sol was synthesized from catalysis reaction with strong acid typically HCl. These alumina soil was dried at 8$0^{\circ}C$~9$0^{\circ}C$ to have a optmum viscosty for spinning, spinned at spinner, and then sintered to make polycrystalline alumina fiber.
Small fishing vessels are manufactured using FRP. Various studies have been conducted to increase the strength of the composite material by mixing alumina powder with resin. Tensile tests and flexural strength tests are conducted to examine the effect of alumina powder on the strength of GFRP. In the current study, resin/alumina composites at different alumina contents (i.e., 0, 1, 5, and 10 vol%) have been prepared. The physical and mechanical properties of the prepared composites have been investigated. From the results, the tensile strength of the specimen with alumina powder mixed in at 10% shows the highest value of 155.66 MPa. The tensile strength of the specimen mixed with alumina powder increases with the amount of alumina powder impregnated. In the flexural strength test, the flexural strength of neat resin without alumina powder has a highest value of 257.7 MPa. The flexural modulus of ALMix-5 has a highest value of 12.06 GPa. Barcol hardness of ALMix-10 has a highest value of 51. We show that alumina powder leads to decreasing cracks on the surface and decreasing length area of delamination.

Recently, hybrid coal research is underway to upgrade low-grade coal. The hybrid coal is made by mixing low-grade coal with bioliquids such as molasses, sugar cane, and lignin. In the case of lignin used here, a large amount of lignin is included in the wastewater of the papermaking process, and thus, research on hybrid coal production using the same is attracting attention. However, since a large amount of metal ions are contained in the lignin wastewater from the papermaking process, substances that corrode the generator are generated during combustion, and the amount of fly ash is increased. To solve this problem, it is essential to remove metal ions in the lignin wastewater. In this study, metal ions were removed by ion exchange with a alumina hollow fiber membrane coated with K-Phillipsite (K-PHI) zeolite. The alumina hollow fiber membrane used as the support was prepared by the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method, and K-PHI seeds were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. The prepared K-PHI seed was seeded on the surface of the support and coated by secondary growth hydrothermal synthesis. The characteristic of prepared coating membrane was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX), and the concentration of metal ions before and after ion exchange was measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). The extraction amount of K+ is 86 mg/kg, and the extraction amount of Na+ is 54.9 mg/kg. Therefore, K-PHI zeolite membrane has the potential to remove potassium and sodium ions from the solution and can be used in acidic lignin wastewater.
Well-dispersed slurries of submicron-sized alumina powders were pressure-infiltrated in 3D preforms of mullite fibers and the effects of the particle size and infiltration pressure on the particle packing characteristics were investigated. Infiltration without pressure showed that the packing density increased as the particle size decreased due to the reduction of the friction between the particles and the fibers. The infiltrated preforms contained large pores in the large voids between the fiber tows and small pores in the narrow voids between the individual fibers. Pressure infiltration resulted in a packing density of 77% regardless of the particle size or the infiltration pressure(210 ~ 620 kPa). Pressure infiltration shortened the infiltration time and eliminated the large pores in preforms infiltrated with the slurries of smaller particles. The slurry pressure-infiltration process is thus an efficient method for the packing of matrix materials in various preforms.
