  • Although alumina aggregates have been used as refractory aggregates due to the improved mechanical properties of refractories as a result of the low contraction of alumina aggregates, the aggregates have a difficulty in fabrication due to its low sinterability. Two types of alumina aggregates and a fused alumina aggregate containing transient liquid forming additives are prepared to investigate the sintering characteristics of aggregates. $Al_2O_3$rich composition in the $Al_2O_3$-MgO-$SiO_2$(-$TiO_2$) system is chosen for the transient liquid phase sintering and the final recrystallized bonding phase between grains inside the fused alumina aggregates is found to be a needle-like mullite phase. The flexural strength of alumina bars, reaction-bonded using the paste having a composition of $Al_2O_3$-MgO-$SiO_2$-$TiO_2$, is about 78 MPa, which is one half value of that of pure alumina.

  • In this study, the higher temperature thermal property of the fly ash-blast furnace slag system Geopolymer including alumina aggregate was investigated whether that Geopolymer will be or not useful as thermal-resistant construction materials. Under every mixing conditions, the crack on the surface of hardened body was not observed up to $800^{\circ}C$ and it corresponded with fact that level of changes was not significant before and after heating process. Residual compressive strength is most high when mixing Blast-Furnace Slag ratio is 60 wt% until temperature reaches $800^{\circ}C$. The major hydrates of hardened body of Geopolymer; amorphous halo pattern between $20{\sim}35^{\circ}$ (2theta) and mullite ($3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$) and quartz ($SiO_2$) was found during the experiment. Amorphous halo pattern was a aluminosilicate gel generated by geopolymeric polycondensation and it was found that the halo pattern of aluminosilicate gel was preserved up to $800^{\circ}C$. The patterns of aluminosilicate gel disappeared from $1,000^{\circ}C$ and crystal phases like gehlenite, calcium silicate, calcium aluminum oxide, microcline was observed with the increase of exposure temperature.

  • Red mud is an inorganic by-product produced from the mineral processing of alumina from Bauxite ores. the development of alkali-activated slag-red mud cement can be a representative study aimed at recycling the strong alkali of the red mud as a construction material. This study is to investigate the optimum water content, compressive strength, moisture absorption coefficient and efflorescence of alkali-activated slag-red mud soil pavement according to the recycling fine aggregate content. The results showed that the optimum water content, moisture absorption coefficient and efflorescence area of alkali-activated slag-red mud soil pavement increased but the compressive strength of that decreased as the recycled fine aggregate content increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to develope the environmentally favorable method of roller compacted soil concrete pavement using industrial waste red mud. Red mud was the major solid waste produced in the process of alumina extraction from bauxite(Bayer process). For recycling purpose, red mud was treated and applied to use as concrete admixtures. To this end, laboratory test such as compressive strength of soil concrete, and field test such as construction characteristics of soil concrete pavement, had been conducted. From the study results, the compressive strength of soil concrete was strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy. The optimum mix proportion was comprised of cement 300 $kg/m^3$, water 110 $kg/m^3$, fine aggregate 600 $kg/m^3$, course aggregate 1400 $kg/m^3$, red mud admixture 50 $kg/m^3$ and compaction energy above 2.86 $cm-kgf/m^3$. The $7^{th}$-day and $28^{th}$-day mean compressive strength of soil concrete were 43.8 MPa and 53.3 MPa each under the optimum condition. Pavement application of soil concrete using red mud admixture indicated that the proposed method was simple in case of construction and showed a good surface texture.

  • Alumina powder was prepared from heat-treatment of artificial marble waste fine aggregate containing $Al(OH)_3$ for the purpose of the feasibility of its recycling. Artificial marble waste was heat-treated between $500^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ and XRD, BET surface area, BJH pore size distribution and adsorption of As were analyzed for heat-treated powder. It was found that the adsorption efficiency of As was significantly affected by phase composition of alumina powder rather than its physical characteristic. Heat-treated powder compact was sintered to produce the pellet. Alumina pellet with porosity more than 60% could be obtained after sintering below $1200^{\circ}C$ and also the addition of glass powder as a sintering aid had a positive effect on lowering sintering temperature, led to the high porosity near 60% and adsorption of As over 60% even at $900^{\circ}C$.

  • Raw perlite is a volcanic alumino-silicate and is used as aggregate in the construction industry. The high silica and alumina contained in the raw perlite allows the production of geopolymer mortar with the help of alkaline solutions. In this study, different geopolymer mortars are obtained by mixing ground perlite (GP), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), water and CEN standard sand and the strength and microstructure of these mortars are investigated. Mortar specimens are placed in the oven 24 hours after casting and kept at different temperatures and times, then the specimens are cured under laboratory conditions until the day of strength tests. After curing, unit weight, ultrasound pulse velocity, flexural and compressive strengths are determined. Experimental results indicate that the mechanical properties of the mortars enhance with increasing oven-curing period and temperatures as well as increasing NaOH molarity. In addition, SEM/EDS and XRD analyses are performed on the mortar specimens and the results are interpreted.

  • Flexural strength, microstructure, hydration reaction and moisture sensitivity in macro defect-free (MDF) cement, which basically prepared of high alumina cement (HAC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and polyvinylalcohol (PVA) as water soluble polymer were investigated. Cement composites based on HAC-PVA system were improved in flexural strength than that of HAC-HPMC system especially, the strength of specimens added to 10 wt% of polyvinylalcohol was 160 MPa. These improvements of flexural strength were attributed to not only the effect of water soluble polymer in elimination of macropores (above 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and cement grain bridging, but the effect of unhydrate cement as an aggregate. Moisture sensitivity and flexural strength in wet condition of MDF cement composites immersed in water at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 3 days were decreased.

  • New polishing technique for small parts has been tried out using the principle of particle electromechanics. Common fine abrasives such as alumina, diamond, silicon carbide are dielectric materials which are polarized under an electric field, and a non-uniform electric field makes abrasive particles translate along the field line. Using this principle, We make abrasive particles aggregate in the vicinity of the micro tool which is fir the surface finishing of a small part without contact with it. The behavior of particles is optically measured, and the machined depth of glass is examined.

  • Geopolymer is an eco-friendly construction material that has various advantages such as reduced $CO_2$ emission, fire resistance and low thermal conductivity compared to cement. However, it has not been many studies on the thermal behavior of the surface of the geopolymer panel when flame is applied to the surface. In this study, surface characteristics of hardened geopolymer on flame exposure was investigated to observe its characteristics as heat-resistant architectural materials. External structure changes and crack due to the heat shock were not observed during the exposure on flame. According to the residue of calcite and halo pattern of aluminosilicate gel, decarboxylation and dehydration were extremely limited to the surface and, therefore, it is thought that durability of hardened geopolymer was sustained. Gehlenite and calcium silicate portion was inversely proportional to quartz and calcite and significantly directly proportional to BFS replacement ratio. Microstructure changes due to the thermal shock caused decarboxylation and dehydration of crystallization and it was developed the pore and new crystalline phase like calcium silicate and gehlenite. It is thought that those crystalline phase worked as a densification and strengthening mechanism on geopolymer panel surface.
