The present study was undertaken to develop the in vitro sun protection factor(SPF) test method having good correlation with in vivo method using human. 8% homomentyl salicylate, P3 reference standard and commercially available sunscreen products were measured by the in vitro method using SPF 290S analyzer, and the SPFs were compared with the SPFs measured by in vivo test method. In vitro SPFs of 8% HMS and P3 reference standard were 4.59 $\pm$ 0.12 and 14.94 $\pm$ 0.83. There are good correspondence, correlation coefficients were 0.9506 and 0.9769 respectively, between the in vitro and in vivo SPFs for the sunscreen creams and lotions. Correlation coefficients of makeup base/liquid foundation, lotion labled with "shake before use" and compact powder were 0.8812, 0.8632 and 0.5984 respectively. The optimum mixture ratio of compact powder and cream base represents 1:0.8. These results suggest that the in vitro SPF test method will be able to be used as an alternative method for in vivo SPF in case of lotion and cream.

Sand Compaction Pile method is one of the widely used ground improvement techniques at loose sand or soft clay ground in Asian countries. However, due to environmental and economical problems concerning shortage of sand resources alternative materials are needed to substitute sand for SCP. This study is on the applicability of slag as an alternative material SCP. Consolidation and direct shear test are performed for the slag-clay composite specimens to find out the positive effects of consolidation rate and shear resistance of slag reinforced ground. The result shows that slag has similar effects with sand in consolidation and shear resistance behavior in composite ground, which says slag can be used as alternative material of sand for SCP.

The van der Pauw technique is one of the popular methods for determining the conductivity of flat metal samples. Traceability of the national standard for the conductivity has been achieved by direct current measurement techniques in national measurement institutes of many countries. But recently, alternative current measurement techniques for determining the conductivity of flat metal samples is also interested. In this study, we measured the conductivity of non-ferrous and ferrous flat metals at alternative current using van der Pauw technique. As measurement results, the conductivities of the samples were decreased according to increasing the test frequency even though the decreasing ratio was different.
The point load test (PLT) is a widely-used alternative method in the field to determine the uniaxial compressive strength due to its simple testing machine and procedure. The point load test index can estimate the uniaxial compressive strength through conversion factors based on the rock types. However, the mechanism correlating these two parameters and the influence of the mechanical properties on PLT results are still not well understood. This study proposed a theoretical model to understand the mechanism of PLT serving as an alternative to the UCS test based on laboratory observation and literature survey. This model found that the point load test is a self-confined compression test. There is a compressive ellipsoid near the loading axis, whose dilation forms a tensile ring that provides confinement on this ellipsoid. The peak load of a point load test is linearly positive correlated to the tensile strength and negatively correlated to the Poisson ratio. The model was then verified using numerical and experimental approaches. In numerical verification, the PLT discs were simulated using flat-joint BPM of PFC3D to model the force distribution, crack propagation and BPM properties' effect with calibrated micro-parameters from laboratory UCS test and point load test of Berea sandstones. It further verified the mechanism experimentally by conducting a uniaxial compressive test, Brazilian test, and point load test on four different rocks. The findings from this study can explain the mechanism and improve the understanding of point load in determining uniaxial compressive strength.
Damage detection based on dynamic characteristics of a structure is one of important roles in structural damage identification. It is difficult to detect local structural damage using traditional dynamic experimental methods due to a limited number of sensors used in an experiment. In this work, a non-contact test stand of fan blades is established, and a full-field noncontact test method, combined with three-dimensional digital image correlation, Bayesian operational modal analysis, and damage indices, is used to detect local damage of a fan blade under ambient excitation without use of baseline information before structural damage. The methodology is applied to detect invisible local damage on the fan blade. Such a method has a seemingly high potential as an alternative to detect local damage of blades with complex high-precision surfaces under extreme working conditions because it is a noncontact test method and can be used under ambient excitation without human participation.
This paper describes a highly accelerated life test (HALT, USPCBT) method for rapid qualification testing of STH PWB(Silver Through Hole Printed Wiring Boards). This method was carried out to be an alternative to the present time-consuming standard 1344 hours life testing(THB). The accelerated life test conditions were $121^{\circ}C$/95%R.H. at 50V bias and without bias. Their results are compared with those observed in the standard 1344 hours life test at $40^{\circ}C$/95%R.H. at 50V bias and without bias. The studies were focused on the samples time-to-failure as well as the associated conduction and failure mechanisms. The abrupt drop of insulation resistance is due to the absorption of water vapour. And the continuous drop of insulation resistance is due to the Ag migration. The ratios of time-to-failure of HALT(USPCBT) to THB were 25 and 11 at 50V bias and without bias respectively.
Chromium-nickel alloy 42XNM (XHM-1, Bochvalloy) is considered as a promising material for future generations of nuclear reactors, primarily as a material for the fuel elements shells in the development of accident tolerant fuel. However, as with most nickel-based alloys, 42ХNМ is characterized by a sharp decrease in plastic properties in the temperature range of (500-900)℃. This effect is enhanced by neutron irradiation. Preliminary tests of ring samples of 42XNM alloy (after irradiation as a part of the VVER-1000 control system) in the temperature range of ductility failure showed that the standard technique for processing tensile diagrams does not allow to evaluate the plastic properties correctly at low strains. Therefore, in this work, the alternative method for testing ring samples from materials with low plastic characteristics was developed. It was shown that the minimum value of the permanent strain of the irradiated 42XNM alloy in the temperature range of (500-1100)℃, determined by the alternative method, was ~1.6% at 750 ℃.

In this study, the full-scale laboratory model test on utilization of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as vertical drains to use an alternative material of sand in soft ground is performed. The settlement and pore water pressure were measured to evaluate the discharge capacity and filed application, and the results were compared and analyzed through the finite element method. The measured and estimated settlement in all vertical drain materials decreases gradually with the load increase. The measured settlement 6.55~8.63 mm, and the estimated by the Hyperbolic model was 7.45~7.92 mm. So the model used for the analysis can be applied to the settlement estimation of the actual field. The variations of pore water pressure with time showed constantly regardless of the load in all vertical drainage materials. The pore water pressure was similarity to that of sand after rapid drawdown. Therefore, it was applicable to the field because discharge capacity was enough to be an alternative material to the sand which had been being used as the vertical drains.

When floating platform or drilling unit is located at operating station during its design life, it has to have the sufficient stability considering external environment. To evaluate whether offshore structure is complied with the required design criteria for intact stability, the factors which decrease the righting moment have to be considered. Wind heeling moment is one of main factors because the direction is opposite to the righting moment. According to 2009 MODU CODE (Code for the construction and equipment of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units, 2009), wind heeling moment derived from wind tunnel test on scale model of offshore structure enables to apply as alternative given formula and method in 2009 MODU CODE. However, there is no the specific method for applying data derived from wind tunnel test. Based on the following reasons, this paper presents that the calculation method of wind heeling moment utilizing non-dimensional coefficient relative to wind loads (wind forces and moments) and the comparison with each method applying an example.

In order to examine whether the difference between two point estimates of population proportions is statistically significant, data analysts use two techniques. The first is to explore the overlap between two associated confidence intervals. Second method is to test the significance which is introduced at most statistical textbooks under the common assumptions of consistency, asymptotic normality, and asymptotic independence of the estimates. Under the null hypothesis which is two population proportions are equal, the pooled estimator of population proportion is preferred as a point estimator since two independent random samples are considered to be collected from one population. Hence as an alternative method, we could obtain another confidence interval of the difference of the population proportions with using the pooled estimate. We conclude that, among three methods, the overlapped method is under-estimated, and the difference of the population proportions method is over-estimated on the basis of the proposed method.
