Tunneling is a very dangerous and expansive work. Especially, the concrete lining works need many long hours and much cost. As an alternative, the unlined tunneling methods including NMT have been developed in various country. These methods have advantages in cost, time and quality. In Korea, many considerations have been conducted to apply the unlined tunneling method in comparatively good rock. Since primary reinforcements play the role of the final supporting system in unlined tunnels, the initial stiffness and long term durability of reinforcements are very important for tunnel safety. To establish the reinforcements standard suitable to Korea, we investigated the foreign standards and construction cases, comparing geological and construction conditions of foreign land and Korea. As the result, we have proposed the standard of primary supporting system for unlined tunnel in aspects of material, design, construction and quality control etc.

Effective methods for monitoring the quality of polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films are discussed. Raman spectroscopy is typically used to determine crystallinity of poly-Si, but this method has limitations for data gathering on large substrates for mass production of poly-Si TFT backplanes. Spectroscopic ellipsometry is proposed as an alternative for fast and simple estimation of poly-Si quality on large substrates. By using both ellipsometry and Raman spectroscopy, it is possible to determine whether the quality and uniformity of the poly-Si films meet the criteria required for mass production of TFT backplanes for AMOLED panels.

The ductility demand for seismic design of a single degree of structure or an individual structural member can be determined easily. However, there is no established method to determine the ductility demand far a structural system. The object of this paper is to develop a method for the estimation of the ductility demand far structural systems, in which the inelastic behavior can be taken into account properly. The validity of the proposed method has been examined far several cases with different structures and different earthquake excitations. The method is also compared with two alternative methods.
Traditional design methods of bearing capacity of shallow foundations are deterministic in the sense that they do not explicitly consider the inherent uncertainty associated with the factors affecting bearing capacity. To account for such uncertainty, available deterministic methods rather employ a fixed global factor of safety that may lead to inappropriate bearing capacity predictions. An alternative stochastic approach is essential to provide a more rational estimation of bearing capacity. In this paper, the likely distribution of predicted bearing capacity of strip footings subjected to vertical loads is obtained using a stochastic approach based on the Monte Carlo simulation. The approach accounts for the uncertainty associated with the soil shear strength parameters: cohesion, c, and friction angle, ${\phi}$, and the cross correlation between c and ${\phi}$. A set of stochastic design charts that assure target reliability levels of 90% and 95%, are developed for routine use by practitioners. The charts negate the need for a factor of safety and provide a more reliable indication of what the actual bearing capacity might be.
Composite beams with web openings are vulnerable to Vierendeel bending failure. The available methods provide quite conservative estimates of Vierendeel bending resistance. An alternative design method to compute the resistance was proposed in this study, based on quadratic nonlinear interactions of normalized shear force, axial force and Vierendeel bending moment. The interactions of the top and bottom Tee section must satisfy mutual conditions to prevent the Vierendeel failure. The normalized shear force and Vierendeel bending moment of the composite part were used instead in the top Tee interaction. The top Tee axial force was computed based on force equilibrium. Based on a rigid-plastic model, the composite resistance is estimated using an effective slab width of the vertical shear resistance. On using the proposed method, nonlinear reductions due to shear loads and axial forces are not required, in contrast to prior methods. The proposed method was validated against experiments from literature. The method limitations and accuracy as well as the Vierendeel behavior were investigated by finite element simulations, with varied composite beam parameters. The proposed design loads are less conservative than earlier estimates and deviate less from the simulations.
In order to protect the environment from the refrigerant pollution, the $CO_2$ may be regarded as one of the most attractive alternative refrigerants for an automotive air-conditioning system. Control methods for a $CO_2$ system should be different because of $CO_2$'s unique properties as a refrigerant. Especially, the high-side pressure of a $CO_2$ system should be controlled for the effective operation of the system. In this study, the high-side pressure setpoint algorithm was developed by using a neural network and a Lagrange interpolation method. These methods were compared. Simulation results showed that a Lagrange interpolation method was more effective than a neural network in the respect of its easiness of programming and shorter execution time.

This study is concerned with the comparison of two time homogeneous Poisson processes. Traditionally, the methods of testing equality of Poisson processes were based on the binomial distribution or its normal approximations. The sampling plans used in these methods are to observe the processes concurrently over a predetermined time interval, possibly different for each process. However, when the values of the intensities of the processes are small, inverse type sampling plans are more appropriate since there may be cases where only a few or even no events are observed in the predetermined time interval. This study considers 9 inverse type sampling plans for the comparison of two Poisson processes. For each sampling plans considered, critical regions and the design parameters of the sampling plan are determined to guarantee the significance level and the power at some values of the alternative hypothesis. The Problem of comparing of two Weibull processes are also considered.

Background: Recently, the kinesiology taping (KT) method was reported to be effective in improving walking ability in foot drop patients after stroke, but the clinical basis is still unclear. Objectives: The KT method was compared with ankle-foot orthotics (AFO) to investigate gait ability in foot drop patients after stroke. Design: Crossover study design. Methods: In this study, 11 stroke patients with foot drop participated. Walking ability of all subjects for both conditions (KT and AFO) was measured using the GAITRite system. The order of application of the two conditions was determined randomly by drawing lots. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare walking ability between the two conditions. The level of statistical significance was set at P<.05. Results: There were no significant differences between the KT and AFO methods in terms of velocity, cadence, step length, and stride length (P>.05, all). Conclusion: This study recommends KT as an alternative to the AFO, since KT provides evidence of preventing of foot drops and improving gait ability in stroke patient.
This study investigated the effects of teacher inquiry methods on children's interpersonal cognitive problem solving ability. The subjects were 40 children who ranged in age from 48 to 60 months. The experimental group participated in problem solving training through teacher's inquiries 3 times per week for 10 weeks, but the control group did not have training in problem solving. The statistical analysis was by the SAS program. The results showed that (1) the group trained in interpersonal problem solving interaction showed a greater frequency for solving interpersonal problems on the post-test; they also employed more ways of solving interaction problems (such as, alternative solutions, consequential solutions, etc.). (2) There was no difference between groups in the levels of responses for solving interpersonal problems.
The main idea behind the paper is to present two alternative methods of homogenization of the heat conduction problem in composite materials, where the heat conductivity coefficients are assumed to be random variables. These two methods are the Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) technique and the second order perturbation second probabilistic moment method, with its computational implementation known as the Stochastic Finite Element Method (SFEM). From the mathematical point of view, the deterministic homogenization method, being extended to probabilistic spaces, is based on the effective modules approach. Numerical results obtained in the paper allow to compare MCS against the SFEM and, on the other hand, to verify the sensitivity of effective heat conductivity probabilistic moments to the reinforcement ratio. These computational studies are provided in the range of up to fourth order probabilistic moments of effective conductivity coefficient and compared with probabilistic characteristics of the Voigt-Reuss bounds.
