  • Environmental pollution is produced by consumption of fossil fuel, therefore alternative fuels is interested for development of new energy resources and reduction of exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biofuels are produced from new vegetable oil and animal fat, may be used as fuel without change of engine structure in diesel engine. In this paper, the test results on specific fuel consumption, combustion characteristics of neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were presented using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine, especially this biodiesel was produced from biodiesel fuel at our laboratory by ourselves. This study showed that specific fuel consumption is increased slightly, on the other hand cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, rate of heat release and soot were decreased slightly in the case of biodiesel blends than neat diesel oil.

  • Hydrotreated biodiesel(HBD) is paraffinic bio-based liquid, with the chemical structure $C_nH_{2n+2}$, originating from vegetable oil(the process can also be applied to animal fat). The oil or fat is treated in a number of process, the most important being hydrogenation, in order to create a bio-based liquid diesel fuel. During the hydrogenation, oxygen is removed from the triglyceride and converted into water. Propane is formed as a by product and can be combusted and used for energy production. HBD can be used in conventional diesel engines, pure or blended with conventional diesel, due to its similar physical properties to diesel. This study reports the quality characteristics with chemical and physical properties as an alternative diesel fuel. Especially, HBD showed higher cetane value and number than FAME, and it is consisted of $C_{15}$ - $C_{18}$ n-paraffinic compounds. We also describes quality characteristics of HBD blends(2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 vol%) in automotive diesel. HBD blends(max. 20 vol%) were the limit by the Korean specification due to poor low temperature characteristics.

  • In this paper, we attempt to analyze consumer preference for the alternative-fuel vehicles based on data from a stated preference using the conjoint analysis. Five possible fuel types (gasoline, diesel, CNG, LPG, Hybrid (electricity+gasoline)) are covered in conjoint cards. To estimate and analyze consumer preference, discrete choice model is used. Specifically, Bayesian mixed logit model is used. Based on estimating results, we discuss the business strategy and policy for the alternative fuel vehicle.

  • The exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized as a major cause influencing environment strongly. In this study, the possibility of biodiesel fuel and oxygenated fuel(dimethoxy methane; DMM) was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated direct injection diesel engine. The smoke emission of blending fuel(biodiesel fuel 90vol-%+DMM 10vol-%) was reduced approximately 70% at 2500rpm, full load, in comparison with the diesel fuel. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption showed no significant differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel and DMM blended fuel increased compared with commercial diesel fuel due to the oxygen component in the fuel. It was needed a NOx reduction counterplan that EGR method was used as a countermeasure for NOx reduction. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx emission was achieved with BDF(95 vol-%) and DMM(5 vol-%) blended fuel and cooled EGR method(15%).

  • Biodiesel fuel(BDF) can be effectively used as an alternative fuel in diesel engine. However, BDF may affect the performance and exhaust emissions in diesel engine because it has different physical and chemical properties from diesel fuel such as viscosity, compressibility and so on. To investigate the effect of injection timing on the characteristics of performance and exhaust emissions with BDF in IDI diesel engine, it was applied the BDF derived from soybean oil in this study. The engine was operated at seven different injection timings from TDC to BTDC $12^{\circ}CA$ and six loads at a single engine speed of 1500rpm. When the fuel injection timing was retarded, better results were showed, which may confirm the advantages of BDF. The simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved at some fixed fuel injection timings of an IDI diesel engine.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong, In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated common rail diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel 5vol-%(min. content) was reduced in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 60% at 4000rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have no large differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was increased compared with a commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with biodiesel fuel(5vol-%) and cooled EGR method($5{\sim}10%$) in a common rail diesel engine.

  • The vast stores of biomass available in the worldwide have the potential to displace significant amounts of fuels that are currently derived from petroleum sources. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one of possible paths by which we can convert biomass to higher value products. The wood pyrolysis oil (WPO), also known as the bio crude oil (BCO), has been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of WPO in a diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, low acidity, and high viscosity of the WPO. One of the easiest way to adopt WPO to diesel engine without modifications is emulsification of WPO with diesel or bio diesel. In this study, a DI diesel engine operated with diesel, bio diesel (BD), WPO/BD emulsion was experimentally investigated. Performance and gaseous & particle emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled by WPO/BD emulsion were examined. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible with emulsion and engine output power was comparable to diesel and bio diesel operation.

  • The common petroleum can make precipitation such as a wax in a polar region due to severely cold weather condition, which can cause problems to fuel supply system. The petroleum product used in the polar region has thus been manufactured and sold suitable for the cold environment. However it is difficult to supply such petroleum products on time since these were mainly supplied abroad. In this article, the original fuel properties were first analyzed in order to find alternative fuel products for polar region. Jet fuel which is excellent cold characteristics was chosen and the fuel properties was tested by adding a constant concentration of lubricant additives to the jet fuel. As a result, the lubricant additive R621 showed the best lubricity, and adding 1000 mg/L of R621 content to the jet fuel was sufficient to enhance the lubricity. We envision that the jet fuel added 1000 mg/L of R621A can be suitable for alternative special antarctic blend diesel (SAB) in an severe polar environment.

  • In this study, the effects of oxygenated fuel such as ethylene glycol mono-normal butyl ether(EGBE) was investigated both DI and IDI diesel engine. Because EGBE includes oxygen content approximately 27.1 %, it is a kind of oxygenated fuel that the smoke emission of EGBE blending fuel is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel. The focus of this study was to investigate the effects of the addition of oxygenated fuel to diesel fuel on the engine-out emissions and the performance. Smoke emissions of all EGBE blends were reduced substantially in comparison with conventional diesel fuel. This study showed that remarkable reduction of smoke with oxygenate blending fuels in diesel engines including DI and IDI combustion method. Besides, this study showed that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx emissions could be achieved by oxygenated fuel and EGR method that was applied to decrease NOx emissions increasing with smoke emissions reduction.

  • Biodiesel is technically competitive with it and offers technical advantages over conventional petroleum diesel fuel. Biodiesel is an environment friendly alternative liquid fuel that can be used in any diesel engine without modification. In this study, (dP/dCA)max and heat release, emission characteristics with different fuel injection timings are compared between diesel fuel and biodiesel in the D.I. diesel engine with T/C. The engine was operated at five different fuel injection timings from BTDC 6deg to 14deg at 2deg intervals and with four different loads at engine speed of 1800rpm. The experiments in a test engine showed that ranges between low and high of (dP/dCA)max got narrower, as the engine load increased, BD blend rate increased, and fuel injection timing was delayed. Cumulative heat release increased with the advanced fuel injection timing. NOX emissions decreased with the delays of fuel injection timing.
