The Chemical Control Act has revised in 2015 to promote chemical safety, particularly enhancing the standards for the installation and management of hazardous chemical handling facilities. However, in some existing facilities, it was difficult to comply with some facility standards because of lack of land, safety accident possibility during rebuilding. In this study, we attempted to provide a more rational approach of dike standard which was the highest(2017: 117, 2018: 83) complaint for two years(2017~2018, 1,087) by prior study, FLACS simulation, analyze safety management standard and conduct a survey. Therefore, considering the purpose of installing the discharge wall only at existing facilities in operation, additional sensors that can detect chemical leakage and leakage were recognized as an additional alternative to installing and operating closed circuit television (CCTV). This will help the safety and cost aspects of small or medium-sized businesses or small and medium-sized enterprises that cannot secure legal grounds or fail to enforce legal regulations due to economic problems such as construction costs.

In Korea, chemical fertilizers and agricultural chemicals have had a significant impact on food production and these are today thought to be an indispensable part of modern agriculture. On the other hand, socioeconomical and IMF and WTO status in Korea are constant reminders of the vulnerability of our fossil fuel dependent agriculture. A new crop production system to improve economic, environmental and production efficiency must be exploited. Our particular concern has been given to an integrated cropping system involving recycling of crop residues, soil and N management, biological N fixation and multipurpose legumes. As a new integrated crop production system, a no-till direct-sown rice-vetch relaying cropping system has been proposed in this paper. The formulation of this system is based on the conception that N fertilizers being neither limitlessly available nor affordable, the current high-input crop production systems have produced troubled results severe labour shortage ill rural areas, balance of payment, environmental degradation and reduction of human health far exceed economic concerns. A natural and logical consequence is that long-term sustainability of agricultural systems must rely on the use and effective management of internal resources. Based on the information obtained throughout a series of experiments last years we have proved that the no-till direct-sown rice-vetch relaying cropping system dictates biological alternative which can augment, and in some cases replace, N fertilizers. Comprehensive discussions were made for the proposed system and it concluded that the system can offer an economically attractive and ecologically sound means of reducing external nitrogen input and improving the quality and quantity of internal resources, and consequently improving the farmers as well as the national returns.
BACKGROUND: Chemical fungicides not only may pollute the ecosystem but also can be environmentally hazardous, as the chemicals accumulate in soil. Biological control is a frequently-used environment-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides in phytopathogen management. However, the use of microbial products as fungicides has limitations. This study isolated and characterized a three-antifungal-enzyme (chitinase, cellulase, and ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase)-producing bacterium, and examined the conditions required to optimize the production of the antifungal enzymes. METHOD AND RESULTS: The antifungal enzymes chitinase, cellulase, and ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase were produced by bacteria isolated from an sawmill in Korea. Based on the 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis, the bacterial strain AM50 was identical to Streptomyces sp. And their antifungal activity was optimized when Streptomyces sp. AM50 was grown aerobically in a medium composed of 0.4% chitin, 0.4% starch, 0.2% ammonium sulfate, 0.11% $Na_2HPO_4$, 0.07% $KH_2PO_4$, 0.0001% $MgSO_4$, and 0.0001% $MnSO_4$ at $30^{\circ}C$. A culture broth of Streptomyces sp. AM50 showed antifungal activity towards the hyphae of plant pathogenic fungi, including hyphae swelling and lysis in P. capsici, factors that may contribute to its suppression of plant pathogenic fungi. CONCLUSION(S): This study demonstrated the multiantifungal enzyme production by Streptomyces sp. AM50 for the biological control of major plant pathogens. Further studies will investigate the synergistic effect, to the growth regulations by biogenic amines and antifungal enzyme gene promoter.
Cereal grains are the most important food source for humans. As the global population continues to grow exponentially, the need for the enhanced yield and minimal loss of agricultural crops, mainly cereal grains, is increasing. In general, harvested grains are stored for specific time periods to guarantee their continuous supply throughout the year. During storage, economic losses due to reduction in quality and quantity of grains can become very significant. Grain loss is usually the result of its deterioration due to fungal contamination that can occur from preharvest to postharvest stages. The deleterious fungi can be classified based on predominance at different stages of crop growth and harvest that are affected by environmental factors such as water activity ($a_w$) and eco-physiological requirements. These fungi include species such as those belonging to the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium that can produce mycotoxins harmful to animals and humans. The grain type and condition, environment, and biological factors can also influence the occurrence and predominance of mycotoxigenic fungi in stored grains. The main environmental factors influencing grain fungi and mycotoxins are temperature and $a_w$. This review discusses the effects of temperature and $a_w$ on fungal growth and mycotoxin production in stored grains. The focus is on the occurrence and optimum and minimum growth requirements for grain fungi and mycotoxin production. The environmental influence on aflatoxin production and hypothesized mechanisms of its molecular suppression in response to environmental changes are also discussed. In addition, the use of controlled or modified atmosphere as an environmentally safe alternative to harmful agricultural chemicals is discussed and recommended future research issues are highlighted.
Herbal medicines are widely used in many countries for the treatment of many diseases. Although the use of herb extracts as alternative medicine is growing, their toxicological properties have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we have investigated the effects of water and ethanol extracts of 18 herbs on the hepatic lipid metabolism and steatogenic hepatotoxicity. Ethanol extracts of Cirsium japonicum, Carthamus tinctorius, Rehmanniae glutinosa (preparata), Polygala tenuifolia, Foeniculum vulgare, Polygonum multiflorum, and Acorus gramineus and water extracts of Polygonum multiflorum and Rehmanniae glutinosa induced lipid accumulation in Sk-hep1 human hepatoma cells as determined by Nile red staining. These extracts increased the luciferase activity of sterol regulatory element (SRE) and decreased that of peroxisome proliferator response element (PPRE), indicating the possibilities of enhanced fatty acid synthesis and decreased fatty acid oxidation. To identify the components responsible for the fat accumulation, we tested 50 chemicals isolated from the nine herbs. Apigenin, luteolin, pectolinarin and lupeol from Cirsium japonicum, 8-methoxypsoralen and umbelliferone from Foeniculum vulgare and pomonic acid and jiocerebroside from Rehmanniae glutinosa significantly increased the accumulation of lipid droplets. These results suggest that ethanol extracts of Cirsium japonicum, Carthamus tinctorius, Rehmanniae glutinosa (preparata), Polygala tenuifolia, Foeniculum vulgare, Polygonum multiflorum, and Acorus gramineus and water extracts of Polygonum multiflorum and Rehmanniae glutinosa can cause fatty liver disease by decreasing ${\beta}$-oxidation of fatty acid and increasing lipogenesis.

Objectives: Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) is one of the effective alternatives to animal testing, but its credibility in terms of toxicity prediction has been questionable. Thus, this work aims to evaluate its predictive capacity and find ways of improving its credibility. Methods: Using $TOPKAT^{(R)}$, OECD toolbox, and $Derek^{(R)}$, all of which have been applied world-wide in the research, industrial, and regulatory fields, an analysis of prediction credibility markers including accuracy (A), sensitivity (S), specificity (SP), false negative (FN), and false positive (FP) was conducted. Results: The multi-application of QSARs elevated the precision credibility relative to individual applications of QSARs. Moreover, we found that the type of chemical structure affects the credibility of markers significantly. Conclusions: The credibility of individual QSAR is insufficient for both the prediction of chemical toxicity and regulation of hazardous chemicals. Thus, to increase the credibility, multi-QSAR application, and compensation of the prediction deviation by chemical structure are required.
The effects of dip treatments of chemicals (ascorbic acid, cystein, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, histidine: 1% solution) and medicinal herbs (Pueraria thunbergiana, Angelica gigas, Dioscorea japonica, Lindera strychifolia, Cnidium officinale, Astragalus membranaceus: 1% extracts), heat shock ($40-60^{\circ}C$ water), and edible coating (albumin, dextrin, sucrose poly ester, whole soy flour: 0.5-4% solution) on the browning degree of fresh-cut 'Fuji' apples were studied. Among the each treatment methods, the surface browning of fresh-cut apples was best retarded by calcium chloride dip, Astragalus membranaceus dip, $45-50^{\circ}C$ heat shock, coating with 3% dextrin or 1% whole soy flour. The results suggest that the treatments of medicinal herbs extracts, heat shock, and edible coating can be used as alternative for the use of chemical agents for the antibrowning of fresh-cut apples.
Kaempferol 3-O-galactoside (Trifolin), a member of the flavonol group, has been reported to have anticancer effects against promyelocytic leukemia, histocytic lymphoma, skin melanoma and lung cancer. Trifolin has been extracted and used from several plants, but the extraction process is complicated and the final yield is low. Biotransformation is an alternative tool to produce high value-added chemicals from inexpensive compounds. To synthesis trifolin from naringenin, three genes (PeFLS and OsUGE-PhUGT) were introduced into Escherichia coli, respectively. In order to synthesis trifolin from naringenin, a co-culture fermentation system was established by optimizing the cell concentration, biotransformation temperature and medium, isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactoside (IPTG) concentration, substrate supply concentration, and recombinant protein induction time. The established optimal conditions for trifolin production were a 3:1 ratio of BL-UGTE to BL-FLS, induction of recombinant protein at 25 ℃ for 4 h after addition of 2.0 mM IPTG, biotransformation at 30 ℃, and supply of 300 μM naringenin. Through the optimized co-culture fermentation system, trifolin was biosynthesized up to 67.3 mg/L.
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a bio-electrochemical device that generates electricity by utilizing bacterial catalytic activity that degrades wastewater. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the core component of MFC that decides its performance, and Nafion membrane is the most widely used PEM. In spite of the excellent performance of Nafion, it has drawbacks such as high cost, biofouling issue, and non-biodegradable property. Recent studies in MFC attempted to synthetize the alternative membrane for Nafion by incorporating various polymers, sulfonating, fluorinating, and doping other chemicals. This review summarizes characteristics and performances of different composite membrane based MFCs, mostly focusing on PEM.
Water quality is crucial for human health and the environment. Accurate measurement of the quantity of organic carbon in water is essential for water quality evaluation, identification of water pollution sources, and appropriate implementation of water treatment measures. Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis is an important tool for this purpose. Although other methods, such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) are also used to measure organic carbon in water, they have limitations that make TOC analysis a more favorable option in certain situations. For example, COD requires the use of toxic chemicals, and BOD is time-consuming and can produce inconsistent and unreliable results. In contrast, TOC analysis is rapid and reliable, providing accurate measurements of organic carbon content in water. However, common methods for TOC analysis can be complex and energy-intensive because of the use of high-temperature heaters for liquid-to-gas phase transitions and the use of acid, which present safety risks. This study focuses on a TOC analysis method using TiO2 photocatalysis, which has several advantages over conventional TOC analysis methods, including its low cost and easy maintenance. For TiO2, rutile and anatase powders are mixed with an inorganic binder and spray-coated onto a glass fiber substrate. The TiO2 powder and inorganic binder solutions are adjusted to optimize the photocatalytic reaction performance. The TiO2 photocatalysis method is a simple and low-power approach to TOC analysis, making it a promising alternative to commonly used TOC analysis methods. This study aims to contribute to the development of more efficient and cost-effective approaches for water quality analysis and management by exploring the effectiveness and reliability of the developed equipment.
