A Study on the Usability of Biodiesel Fuel Derived from Rice Bran Oil as an Alternative Fuel for IDI Diesel Engine

  • The world is faced with a problem of air pollution due to the exhaust emissions from automobile. Recently, lots of researchers have been attracted to develope various alternative fuels and to use renewable fuels as a solution of these problems. There are many alternative fuels studied in place of diesel fuel made from petroleum. Biodiesel fuel (BDF) is a domestically produced. renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, used vegetable oils, or animal fats. In this study, the usability of BDF, one of the oxygenated fuels as an alternative fuel for diesel engines was investigated in an IDI diesel engine. Emissions were characterized with a neat BDF and with a blend of BDF and conventional diesel fuel. Since the BDF includes oxygen of about 11 %, it could influence the combustion process strongly. Therefore, the use of BDF resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide and smoke emissions with some increase in emissions of oxides of nitrogen. It is concluded that BDF can be utilized effectively as a renewable fuel for IDI diesel engines.

  • Internal engine is the main power source of vehicle and is the main source of air pollution. To satisfy this getting rigorous emission regulation, it must be solved simultaneously the dilemma of reducing emission gas and increasing heat efficiency. Diesel engine is preferred compare with gasoline engine in aspect of energy consumption but it must be solved reducing the containing of NOx, CO and HC. In this study 1. SF6 gas has been widely used in electric equipment as gas insulation because of high dielectric strength and arc extinguishing performance. However, because SF6 gas is one of the green house effect gases, alternative insulation such as SF6 mixture, extremely low temperature gas, vacuum, liquid and solid insulating are being investigated.

  • World demand for natural gas has generated the need for many new land transmission pipelines to be installed in the next decade or so. Although mechanized gas metal arc welding is well developed, there are opportunities for cost savings by using alternative welding processes. Hybrid Nd:YAG laser - gas metal arc welding enables fibre optic delivery of the laser energy to a robotic welding head to be combined with the addition of extra energy and a consumable to produce good quality, deep penetration welds in a single pass. The present paper describes initial procedure development to optimize the laser and gas metal arc welding parameters for making joints in pipeline steel. Satisfactory joint quality was obtained and it is intended to develop the process to prototype field trials.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Natural Gas Engine under Different Operating Conditions

  • Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics were investigated on a natural gas engine at two different fuel injection timings during the intake stroke. The results show that fuel injection timing affects combustion processes. The optimum spark timing (MBT) achieving the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is related to fuel injection timing and air fuel ratio. At MBT spark timing, late fuel injection timing delays ignition timing and prolongs combustion duration in most cases. But fuel injection timing has little effect on IMEP at fixed lambdas. The coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP is dependent on air fuel ratio, throttle positions and fuel injection timings at MBT spark timing. The COV of IMEP increases with lambda in most cases. Late fuel injection timings can reduce the COV of IMEP at part loads. Moreover, engine-out CO and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions can be reduced at late fuel injection timing.

  • Catalytic reduction and oxidation of NO over polyacrylonitrile based activated carbon fibers (PAN-ACF) under various conditions were carried out to develop removal process of NO from the flue gas. The effect of temperature, oxygen concentration and the moisture content for the reduction of NO with ammonia as a reducing agent was investigated. The reduction of NO increased with the oxygen concentration, but decreased with the increased temperature. The moisture content in the flue gas affects the reduction of NO as the inhibition of the adsorption of the other components and the reaction on the surface of ACE For the oxidation of NO to $NO_2$ over PAN-ACF without using a reducing gas, it showed the temperature and the oxygen concentration of the flue gas are the important factors for the NO conversion in which the conversion increased with oxygen concentration and decreased with the temperature increase and might be the alternative option for the selective catalytic reduction process.

  • This paper presents a methodology of improving a conventional numerical model in power systems using GAs and a new GAs-based model which can directly solve the real-valued optimum in the optimization procedure. The power flow which is well known to the power engineer is solved using the proposed GAs as an alternative way of the traditional optimization method. In applying GAs to the power flow, both the notions on a way of the genetic representations and a realization of the genetic operators are fully discussed to evaluate the GA's effectiveness.

  • In case of parallel running with underground gas pipeline and subway, stray current of subway makes a interference on gas pipeline. This interference is one of the reason of gas pipeline corrosion. So, the high speed response rectifier was developed in order to mitigate a interference. In this paper, the field test result of proposed rectifier is presented. The effect of an alternative in stead of the forced drainage system is also presented.

  • Computational analyses are conducted on the combustion characteristics of the coal- and the biomass-derived synthetic gases with low-Btu heating value in gas engine. Using thermochemical analyses on the synthetic gases, combustion pressure, temperature, exhaust gas composition, NO emission and engine power are predicted and the predicted results are compared with small-scale pilot engine test results. In order to investigate the unsteady combustion phenomena in gas engine combustion chamber, CFD analyses are carried out on the coal and the biomass synthetic gases and their computed results are compared to provide the guidelines for the design modification and the tuning of the gas engine burning the synthetic gases as alternative fuels.
