STATCOM Helps to Guarantee a Stable System

  • Transmission System Operators are governed by operational security standards that are applied in real time. During system disturbances, the System Operators must rely on the installed protection and control equipment, prior to human intervention. New power electronic solutions bring rapid and repeatable responses to disturbances, which will help System Operators to guarantee a stable system. Last year, Alstom completed the world's first competitively bid STATCOM to support the voltage on National Grid's 400kV network that supplies London and the Southeast from the north of the UK. It is rated ${\pm}75MVAr$ and forms part of a Static Var System (SVS) with a total rating of 0 to 225MVAr. This paper will describe the reasons for its size, location, its chain-link configuration and give examples of its operating performance. The paper will also describe the features that allow this STATCOM to deliver much more than reactive compensation in support of a wider transmission service objective, as system conditions require.

  • Quest for reliability of hydraulic runners is a concern for all mature electricity producers. The fatigue damage caused by dynamics loads is frequently the root cause of runner failure. This paper presents the damage tolerance approach based on fracture mechanics as the method chosen by Alstom and Hydro-Qu$\acute{e}$bec to predict effects of damage on runner lifetime and consequently to be use as a design method. This is sustained by a research on fracture mechanics properties of runner materials and by recommendations on the strategy to define a safety margin for design. The acquired knowledge permits to identify potential improvement of the runner lifetime without significant cost increase, like being more specific on some chemical composition or heat treatment.

  • 지난 세기의 시작 아래로, 50Hz 또는 60Hz로 운영되는 교류는 저력 계통 망의 송전과 배전에 지배적으로 사용되는 방법이었다. 그러나, 일반적으로 HVDC라 불리는, 고압 직류 송전은 매우 긴 장거리 선로에 대한 경제적 해법을 제공하고 이미 실현 비 동기화 AC계통 사이의 연계를 가능케 하였다. 50MW에서 6300MW까지의 각 Scheme별로 건설된 직류송전은 전세계적으로 총 59GW HVDC Scheme이 설치되어있으며, 이 기술을 위해서는 더 많은 응용이 고려되고 있다. 본 원고에서는 HVDC의 특성, 포함된 설비, HVDC의 사용 그리고 기술 발전의 요약을 기술하였다.

  • This study is about design of vehicle for air tightness to pressure waves of high speed train. When the train runs to high speed over 300km/h, the comfort of passenger come down due to difference pressure between inside and outside of passenger room. The car-body was carried out the design of air-tightness, and the analysis of inside pressure of vehicle in tunnel by TG_TUN of ALSTOM Co. The result of analysis should be used the design of air pressurized system and car-body of G7 high speed train project.

  • This study presents the core contents and superiority of localized Point-Machine which Alstom transferred its technology to Samsung SDS for High Speed Rail, developed based on existing MJ8l Point-Machine that is used in France and other countries. The scope of study includes introducing performance improvement of Localized MJ8l and conducting comparative analysis between Localized MJ8l and french products as well as NS type Point-Machine that has been deployed in the existing rail link. Moreover, the general architecture, features and test run results of Localized MJ8l are described.
