The angiogenic activity of Aloe vera (Aloe baradensis), known as a good healing plant, was investigated. We have extracted and fractionated dichloromethane extract (G1M1D1) and methanol soluble fraction of dichloromethane extract (G1M1D1M1) which contain low-molecular weight substances of Aloe vera gel. G1M1D1 and G1D1M1 fractions induced a radially arranged, spoke-sheel-like vasculature in chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The angiogenic activity was dose-dependent and the angiogenic pattern in the CAM assay. The angiogenic activity was dose-dependent and the angiogenic pattern in the CAM assay was very similar to that of phorbol 12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) used as a positive control. The modified CAM assay, e simple and accurate quantitating method, was used to quntitate the angiogenic activity of G1D1M1 fraction. Application of G1M1D1M1 fraction ($100\mug/egg$) resulted in much more intense angiogenesis than in control while slightly less intense angiogenesis than in PMA (100 ng/egg).
The lectins from mucilaginous jelly and green epidermis of Aloe vera were isolated by gel and affinity chromatography. The molecular weights of the lectins were determined by SDS-PAGE. The molecular weights of the lectins from mucilaginous jelly isolated by Sephadex G-100 were 58.7 kD and 33.3 kD, and that isolated by acid-treated Sepharose 4B was 176.4 kD. The molecular weights of the lectins from epidermis isolated by Sephadex G-100 were 221.1, 54.0 and 32.5 kD respectively. And that isolated by acid-treated Sepharose 4B was 222.0 and 158.0 kD. The agglutinating activity of lectin from jelly was inhibited by D-galactose, lactose and D-galactosamine, but that from epidermis was not inhibited by lactose. The activity was stable at the pH range of $7.0{\sim}9.0$ and at the temperature $0{\sim}60^{\circ}C$.
Chiffon cakes were prepared using various concentrations of aloe gel to develop functional baking procedures. The quality characteristics of chiffon cakes prepared after addition of 20%, 40%, or 60% (w/w) aloe gel, substituting for the same levels of wheat flour, were investigated. No significant weight difference between cakes was observed. The height of cakes containing aloe gel was significantly greater than that of control cakes. The baking loss rate (BLR) of aloe gel decreased as the amount of gel increased, and cakes prepared using 60% (w/w) aloe gel had the lowest BLR. Moisture contents of cakes prepared using aloe gel were higher than that of control cakes. Cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel had the highest moisture content. The pore size of cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel was the smallest of all groups. Crumb color became whiter as the proportion of aloe gel increased. Lightness (L value) of control cake was lower than that of cake containing aloe gel. Redness (a value) of aloe chiffon cakes increased as the proportion of aloe gel rose. Yellowness (b value) of cakes with 40% (w/w) aloe gel was significantly higher than that of the control group. Other cakes showed no difference in b value compared with control cake. Hardness in all cakes prepared with aloe gel was significantly lower than that of the control group. Adhesiveness of control cake was significantly lower than that of other cakes. No significant between-group difference in springiness was observed. The cohesiveness of cakes with 40% (w/w) aloe gel was significantly lower than that of the control group and that of cakes with 20% (w/w) aloe gel. The gumminess and chewiness of control cakes were significantly higher than those of other cakes. The yellowness of cake with 60% (w/w) aloe gel was significantly lower than that of the other groups. Pore size decreased after the addition of aloe gel. There was no significant difference in appearance among cakes thus, all cakes were acceptable to potential consumers. Although no perceptible difference in aloe odor was evident, cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel scored significantly lower in flavor acceptance compared with other cakes. No significant between-cake difference in taste acceptance, perceived moisture level, or texture acceptability was observed. Cakes with 40% and 60% (both w/w) aloe gel were of significantly higher density than other cakes. Overall, the acceptability of cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel was lower than that of other cakes. Ultimately, the results indicated that quality can be enhanced by adding less than 40% (w/w) aloe gel to chiffon cakes as a substitute for wheat flour.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to form a new cosmetic market through the development of a composition with high skin permeability after adding omega 3 to Aloe Vera soothing gel products. Research design, data and methodology: In this study, omega-3 fatty acids were added to cosmetic products in the form of soothing gels. By applying nanoparticle technology to rapidly increase the penetration of raw materials into the skin, characteristics related to skin moisture and regeneration were determined. Omega-3 was used as a raw cosmetic material. Then 5% and 15% nanoparticle aqueous products containing omega-3 were prepared. The developed water hydrate was subjected to skin permeability test using artificial skin. Results: 53 hours of artificial transdermal penetration of the developed composition, the ethanol-based omega-3 containing nanoparticle solubilized raw material was about three times higher penetration than the ethanol-based omega-3 containing nanoparticle solubilized raw material. Conclusions: The raw material product (SR-1901) containing 5% of omega-3 nanoparticle water hydrate has skin regeneration ability and pain reduction effect. It can be expected that the skin cosmetics market will be reorganized into a new distribution structure and opportunity through omega-3 supplemented soothing gel cosmetics with improved efficacy than existing cosmetics.
This study intented to standardize the method for total polysaccharide, which is a functional marker for aloe vera gel in Korea. We used four lyophilized raw materials and commercial aloe gel products, certified as Health Functional Food by Korea Food and Drug Administration, including powder, solution, jelly, tablet and capsule, to optimize the analytical condition of dialysis and phenol-sulfuric acid reaction in polysaccharide analysis. The optimal conditions for polysaccharide analysis included 1 L water for dialysis and change 3 times for 24hr against 25 mL prepared sample solution. Validation test showed lower than 5% of coefficient of variation(CV) in intra-, interday validation in lyophilized raw materials and 4 types of commercial products. In inter-person and inter-laboratory validation with 4 persons from 4 different laboratories, CV(%) were 5.50 and 6.64 respectively. The linearity of polysaccharide analysis was assessed using 5 serial concentration of lyophilized raw materials(0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5%(w/v)). The results showed $R^2{\geq}0.995$ of high linearity. In the commercial aloe vera gel products, the results of reproductivity showed lower than 7.08% and revealed that the standardized method from this study ensured high precision for polysaccharide analysis.
Aloe vera gel supercritical $CO_2$ extract (AVGE) has been shown to contain five phytosterols, reduce visceral fat accumulation, and influence the metabolism of glucose and lipids in animal model experiments. Recent epidemiologic studies have shown that obesity is an established risk factor for several cancers including colorectal cancer. Therefore, we examined the effects of AVGE on intestinal polyp formation in Apc-deficient Min mice fed a high-fat diet. Male Min mice were divided into normal diet (ND), high fat diet (HFD), low dose AVGE (HFD+LAVGE) and high dose AVGE (HFD+HAVGE) groups. The ND group received AIN-93G diet and the latter 3 groups were given modified high-fat AIN-93G diet (HFD) for 7 weeks. AVGE was suspended in 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and administered orally to mice in HFD+LAVGE and HFD+HAVGE groups every day (except on Sunday) for 7 weeks at a dose of 3.75 and 12.5 mg/kg body weight, respectively. ND and HFD groups received 0.5% CMC alone. Between weeks 4 and 7, body weights in the HFD and HFD+LAVGE groups were reduced more than those in the ND group. However, body weights were not reduced in the HFD+HAVGE group. Mice were sacrificed at the end of the experiment and their intestines were scored for polyps. No significant differences were observed in either the incidence and multiplicity of intestinal polyps (${\geq}0.5$ mm in a diameter) among the three groups fed HFD. However, when intestinal polyps were categorized by their size into 0.5-1.4, 1.5-2.4, or ${\geq}2.5$ mm, the incidence and multiplicity of large polyps (${\geq}2.5$ mm) in the intestine in the HFD+HAVGE group were significantly lower than those in the HFD group. We measured plasma lipid (triglycerides and total cholesterol) and adipocytokine [interleukin-6 and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin] levels as possible indicators of mechanisms of inhibition. The results showed that HMW adiponectin levels in the HFD group were significantly lower than those in the ND group. However, the levels in the HFD+HAVGE group were significantly higher than those in the HFD group. These results indicate that HAVGE reduced large-sized intestinal polyps and ameliorated reduction in plasma HMW adiponectin levels in Min mice fed HFD.
Aloe has been widely used as a cosmetic and medicinal plant. Until now, several effects such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, immunity and whitening of aloe gel extract have been reported, but research on aloe by-products occurring in food processing has not been actively conducted. In this study, we investigated whether the aloe by-product extract from food processing could be used as a functional biomaterial. Cytotoxicity was not seen in both the mixer and press extracts. Inhibition of 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation was detected only in the mixer extract and not in the press. It was confirmed that hyaluronic acid accumulation and tyrosinase inhibition increased according to the treatment concentration of the mixer extract. The antimicrobial activity of the mixer extract was observed in the Porphyromonas gingivalis strain, but not in the Streptococcus mutans strain. Antioxidant activity through DPPH and SOD analysis increased with the concentration of the mixer extract. In summary, it was confirmed that the mixer extract of aloe by-products has the effect of inhibiting adipocyte differentiation, moisturizing, whitening, and antioxidant, suggesting the possibility of using it as a functional bio-material for health drinks or beauty masks.
