This paper aims to obtain the effect of lightweight on Radius rod. The response surface method used in the paper is the statistical method. Optimization method is performed with the Radius rod using the lightweight material. Structural analysis is executed by using the ANSYS program to find static and dynamic responses. From this study result, it is verified that the response surface method has the advantage of optimum value in comparison with other optimization methods. The analysis is also performed by response surface method to derive optimal design values. Steel model and aluminium initial model are obtained by finite element analysis to clarify design criteria and the results are compared with three models each other. The weights can be reduced by optimal design analysis results of these models similar to those of existing products. The quantitative goals in this study can also attained through results of fatigue analyses. The reliability on optimal design of Radius rod can be improved by use of structural and fatigue analysis results.

In this study, an improved aluminum alloy (6082-T6) was used to develop a unique model of an aluminum ladder for usage in offshore plant. The structural strength design was carried out in accordance with international standards such as ISO, NORSOK Austria Standard. Load combination was performed to satisfy all conditions. The structural safety of the designed model was verified using SACS, an analysis program for offshore plants based on the Finite elements method. The analysis results confirmed that both stress and deflection were satisfied within the acceptance criteria. The developed model can be applied used in various fields in the near future as it meets all the necessary criteria and is lightweight and has improved productivity.
Finite element (FE) model based structural damage detection (SDD) methods play vital roles in effectively locating and quantifying structural damages. Among these methods, structural model updating should be conducted before SDD to obtain benchmark models of real structures. However, the characteristics of updating parameters are not reasonably considered in existing studies. Inspired by the l∞ norm regularization, a novel anti-sparse representation method is proposed for structural model updating in this study. Based on sensitivity analysis, both frequencies and mode shapes are used to define an objective function at first. Then, by adding l∞ norm penalty, an optimization problem is established for structural model updating. As a result, the optimization problem can be solved by the fast iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (FISTA). Moreover, comparative studies with classical regularization strategy, i.e. the l2 norm regularization method, are conducted as well. To intuitively illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a 2-DOF spring-mass model is taken as an example in numerical simulations. The updating results show that the proposed method has a good robustness to measurement noises. Finally, to further verify the applicability of the proposed method, a six-storey aluminum alloy frame is designed and fabricated in laboratory. The added mass on each storey is taken as updating parameter. The updating results provide a good agreement with the true values, which indicates that the proposed method can effectively update the model parameters with a high accuracy.

We have designed a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope for astronomical observation. The telescope is designed to observe in the wavelength range of 0.5~2.1 ${\mu}m$, when it is cooled down to 77 K. The result of the preliminary design of the support structure and support method of the mirror of a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope is shown in this paper. As a Cassegrain prescription, the optical system of a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope has a focal ratio of f/3.1 with a 300 mm primary mirror (M-1) and 113 mm secondary mirror (M-2). The material of the whole structure including mirrors is aluminum alloy (Al6061-T6). Flexures that can withstand random vibration were designed, and it was validated through opto-mechanical analysis that both primary and secondary mirrors, which are assembled in the support structure, meet the requirement of root mean square wavefront error < ${\lambda}/8$ for all gravity direction. Additionally, when the M-1 and flexures are assembled by bolts, the effect of thermal stress occurring from a stainless steel bolt when cooled and bolt torque on the M-1 was analyzed.

Self-piercing rivet is sheet joining method. It is being used more to join aluminum alloy sheets. Self-piercing riveting is a large-deformation process that involves piercing. The self-piercing rivet, under the press from the punch, pierces the top sheet and forms a mechanical interlock with the bottom sheet. In this study, forging process was designed for manufacturing self-piercing rivet. The forging process has been simulated by using commercial FEM code DEFORM-2D. In simulation of forging process for manufacturing rivet, process sequence, formability, forging load, and distributions of stress and strain were investigated. The suitable forging process could be designed by comparisons of simulation results. The developed process consists of four stages: upsetting, first chamfering, back extrusion, and second chamfering. The simulated results for forging process were confirmed by experimental trials with the same conditions.

Induction heating is the process in which an electrically conducting object (usually a metal) is heated by electromagnetic induction through heat generated in the object by eddy currents. The main advantage of an induction heating device is the generation of the heat inside the target object itself. Hence, non-contact and safe heating devices are widely used in many industrial and medical fields. Recently, a new dental implant system was developed using a shape-memory alloy, wherein an artificial tooth could be easily removed from the dental implant by heating. This paper discusses the development of an induction-heating device to remove the dental crown in the new implant system. First, the finite element simulation of electromagnetic and thermal coupling analysis was implemented to obtain the temperature distributions of the target object for various frequencies, input currents, and coil shapes. Based on the simulation results, experiments were conducted by using prototypes, and an induction heating device was developed to remove the dental crown from the implant.

In order to safely protect high over current flowing into the main circuit at short-circuit without any explosion or fire, the enclosed cartridge fuse with a high interrupting capacity should be applied. But this fuse is impossible to be applied to an inner electronic circuit because of a limited space problem result from the miniaturization trend of products. Therefore, it is necessary to apply a sub-miniature fuse with a relatively small size. However the semi-enclosed fuse which is more free for an influx of air than the enclosed cartridge fuse and is possible to protect fuse elements with chemical and physical combination can be adoptable. But it has a limit of implementing the characteristic of a high breaking capacity. For these reasons, the Fe-42wt%Ni fuse elements alloy and fuse-link with less space were designed to increase a breaking capacity of sub-miniature fuse and its safety for fire and explosion was confirmed in this paper.

Equiatomic FePt and CoPt alloy thin films have received considerable attention as possible magnetic and magneto-optic recording because of their high magnetic anisotropy energy and high coercivity. The high coercivity in these thin films is due to the presence of finely dispersed ordered FePt phase mixed with disordered FePt phase. However, a high temperature treatment, either substrate heating during deposition or post annealing, is needed to obtain the ordered L1$\_$0/ phase with high value of magneto crystalline anisotropy. Recent microstructural studies on these films suggest that the average grain size ranges from 10-50 nm and the grains are magnetically coupled between each other. On the other hand, the ultrahigh-density magnetic recording media with low media noise imposes the need of a material, which consists of magnetically isolated grains with size below 10 nm. The magnetic grain isolation can be controlled by the amount of additional non-magnetic element in the system which determines the interparticle separation and therefore the interparticle interactions. Recently, much research work has been done on various non-magnetic matrices. Preliminary studies showed that the samples prepared in B$_2$O$_3$ and Carbon matrices have shown strong perpendicular anisotropy and fine grain size down to 4nm, which suggest these nanocomposite films are very promising and may lead to the realization of a magnetic medium capable of recording densities beyond 1 Tb/in$^2$. So, in this work, the effect of Carbon doping on the magnetic properties of FePt nanoparticles were investigated.

Ultrasonic grinding system is that the ultrasonic vibration by ultrasonic actuator is applied on conventional grinding system during grinding process. The Ultrasonic vibration with a frequency of over 20kHz can reduce grinding forces and increase surface quality, material removal rate (MRR) and grinding wheel life. In addition, ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding can be used for the materials that are difficult to cut. In this paper, methodology for ultrasonic tools is studied based on finite element method, and in turn the ultrasonic tools are designed and fabricated. It is found that the ultrasonic tool can vibrate with a frequency of 20kHz and amplitude of $25{\mu}m$. In order to verify the machining performance, the grinding experiment is performed on titanium alloy. By applying ultrasonic vibration, the grinding force and temperature are reduced and MRR is increased compared with the conventional grinding.

In this study, the characteristics of cooling and rolling during strip casting process is obtained in comparison with the experimental and analytical results. The prupose of this study is to effectively analyze the thermal and mechanical deformation of roller applying the results of the heat transfer and the pressure distribution to boundary conditions. And then the relation between strip thickness and roll deformation is shown. The second purpose is to obtain the proper condition of the continuous casting for stainless steel. The summary and conclusions can be made on the basis of the results obtained by the theories and experiments. a) The strip casting condition for the fine surface quality of tin-alloy as-cast material was obtained in accordance with the velocity of roll rotation and initial roll gap. b) The experimental condition that the dimension of the cast strip thickness coincide with that of the initial roll gap was according to the experimental result of continuous casting by twin-roll type. c) The thermoelastic finite element model to calculate the roll deformation is represented. Thermoelastic model prediction for the roll deformation are in good agreement with the experimental results considering the thermal expansion of the roll. d) The higher cooling rates were obtained by a twin-roller quenching technique. Also quenched microstructure of the rapidly solidified shell was verified. e) The magnitude of roll deformation due to the thermal expansion and roll separating force is quantit- atively represented in the analysis of continuous casting for stainless steel.
