  • Several poly(alkyl methacrylate-b-t-butyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers were synthesized by group transfer polymerization. The molecular weight of poly(t-butyl methacrylate) segments and the composition of the resulting block copolymers were controlled by the monomer feed ratios and mole ratios of monomer to initiator. The poly(t-butyl methacrylate) block was quantitatively hydrolyzed to poly(methacrylic acid) block by refluxing with a catalytic amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid in dioxane at $100^{\circ}C$ for 12 hrs. The thermogravimetric analysis of poly(alkyl methacrylate-b-t-butyl methacrylate) exhibited the lose of isobutylene and subsequent anhydride formation in the range of $205-300^{\circ}C$.

  • Binding of N-Alkyl phenothiazines (NAP) to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by spectroscopic methods. It was found that the phenothiazine ring common to all drugs makes major contribution to interaction. However, the nature of alkylamino group at position 10 influences the protein binding significantly. Stern-Volmer plots indicated the presence of static component in the quenching mechanism. The high magnitude of rate constant of quenching indicated that the process of energy transfer occurs by intermolecular interaction and thus the drug-binding site is in close proximity to tryptophan residues of BSA. Binding studies in presence of hydrophobic probe, 8-anilino-1-naphthalein-sulphonic acid showed that there is hydrophobic interaction between drug and the probe and they do not share common sites in BSA. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures showed that the binding of NAP to BSA predominantly involve hydrophobic forces. The effects of some cations and anions common ions were investigated on NAP-BSA interactions. The CD spectrum of BSA in presence of drug showedthat binding of drug leads to change in the helicity of the protein.

  • N-Substituted anilines react with triethanolamine at 180℃ in the presence of a catalytic amount of tris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium(Ⅱ) chloride to give the corresponding 1-substituted indoles in good to high yields. Similar treatment of the anilines with N-benzyldiethanolamine or triisopropanolamine in place of triethanolamine also affords the indoles in good yields. An intermolecular alkyl group transfer between anilines and alkanolamines is assumed to be the key step of these reactions.

  • Studies have been conducted to explore single electron transfer (SET) promoted photocyclization reactions of ($\omega$-phthalimidoalkylthio)acetic acids (alkyl=ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n -hexyl and n-nonyl). Photocyclizations occur in methanol in modest yields to produce cyclized products in which phthalimide carbonyl carbon is bonded to the carbon of side chain in place of the carboxylic group. The initially formed cyclized products undergo efficient water eliminations to produce enthiol ethers in secondary ground state reactions.

  • Group 6 $M(CO)_4$(2, 2'-bipyridine)[M=Cr, Mo, W] was synthesized by substituting CO ligand of $M(CO)_6$ with strong electron donating ligand, 2, 2'-blpyridine, in the presence of phase transfer catalyst. The effective of catalyst and solvent on the product yield were discussed according to concentration and kinds of catalyst, kinds of center cation and anion, type of alkyl and aryl groups attached to the center cation, and different chain length.

  • We have investigated the dielectric characteristics of palmitic acid(PA), stearic acid (SA) and arachidic acid(AA) Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films because these fatty acid systems have a same hydrophilic group and a different hydrophobic one (alkyl chain length). In this work. fatty acid systems were used as LB films and the status of the deposited films was confirmed by evaluating the transfer ratio. the UV absorption and the capacitance. Also, the dielectric characteristics such as the frequency-capacitance characteristics and the dielectric dispersion and absorption characteristics of PA, SA and AA through-plane were measured. The relative dielectric constants of PA, SA and AA LB films were about $2.6\sim4.6$, $2.4\sim4.1$ and $2.2\sim3.8$, respectively. That is, the relative dielectric constants were decreased in proportion to the chain length of methylene group. And, the dielectric dispersion and absorption of each fatty acid LB films have arisen from spontaneous polarization of dipole polarization in the range of $10^4\sim10^5[Hz]$.

  • Studies have been conducted to explore single electron transfer (SET) induced photocyclization reactions of N-(trimethylsilylmethoxyalkyl)phthalimides(alkyl=E thyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, n-pentyl, and n-octyl). Photocyclizations occur in methanol in high yields to produce cyclized products in which phthalimide carbonyl carbon is bonded to the carbon of side chain in place of the trimethylsilyl group. Mechanism for these photocyclizations involving intramolecular SET from oxygen in the $\alpha-silylmethoxy$ groups to the singlet excited state phthalimide moieties followed by desilylation of the intermediate $\alpha-silylmethoxy$ cation radicals and cyclization by radical coupling are proposed. In contrast, photoreaction of N-(trimethylsilylmethoxyethyl) phthalimide in acetone follows different reaction routes to produce two cyclized products in which carbon-carbon bond formation takes place between the phthalimide carbonyl carbon and the carbon $\alpha$ to silicon and oxygen atoms via triplet carbonyl hydrogen abstraction triplet carbonyl silyl group abstraction pathways. The normal singlet SET pathway dominates these triplet processes for photoreaction of this substance in methanol. The efficient and regioselective cyclization reactions observed for photolysis in methanol represent synthetically useful processes for construction of medium and large ring heterocyclic compounds.

  • We have investigated the dielectric and electrical characteristics of palmitic acid(PA) stearic acid(SA) and arachidic acid(AA) Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films because these fatty acid systems have a same hydrophilic group and a different hydrophobic one(methylene group or alkyl chain length). The fatty acid systems were used as LB films and the status of the deposited films was confirmed by evaluating the transfer ratio the UV absorption and the capacitance. The dielectric characteristics such as the frequency-capacitance characteristics and the dielectric dispersion and absorption characteristics of PA SA and AA through-plane were measured. The relative dielectric constants of PA, SA and AA LB films were about 3.0~4.6, 2.7~3.0 and 2.4~3.0 respectively. That is the relative dielectric constants were decreased in proportion to the chain length of methylene group. Also the dielectric dispersion and absorption of each fatty acid LB films have arisen from spontaneous polarization of dipole polarization in the range of 10$^4$~10$^{5}$ [Hz]. The conductivity of PA, SA and AA LB films obtained from I-V characteristics were about 9$\times$10$^{-14}$ , 3$\times$10$^{-14}$ and 5$\times$10$^{-15}$ [S/cm]. respectively. These results have shown the insulating materials and could control the conductivity y changing the length of methylene group. Also we have confirmed that the barrier height of fatty acid systems were almost the same ones obtained from dielectric characteristics.
