  • In this study, Bio-hydrogen is produced from organic waste mixtures containing food waste and waste activated sludge (WAS). The effects of different operational factor on hydrogen production, including various solubilization methods for pretreatments of WAS, pH and different ratios of food waste and WAS, were investigated. The highest hydrogen production values are obtained as 4.3 mL $H_2/g$ $VS_{consumed}$ in the case of applying the mixed pre-treatments of alkali and ultrasonic. The pH value in bio-reactor increased from 4 to 8 after the ultrasonic treatment with alkali and the hydrogen yield touched its highest value in the pH range of 5.0 to 5.5. Similarly, the hydrogen production reached the level of 13.8 mL $H_2/g$ $VS_{consumed}$ using the same pre-treatment method from the mixture of food waste and WAS. The ratio of 2 : 1 produced a maximum amount of hydrogen of 5.0 L $H_2/L/d$. The amount of volatile fatty acids(VFAs) including acetate, propionate and butyrate, were also varied considerably. Propionate decreased consistently with rising of hydrogen while butyrate comparing to acetate relatively increased in the effluent.

  • To increase specific surface property of activated carbon fiber(ACF), chemical activation(CA) using alkali metals and surface treatment(ST) using oxidant was widely used. The CA and ST process developed micro-pore on the surface of ACF by chemical reaction of the alkali metals and oxidative of oxidant, respectively. To improve the efficiency of CA process for developing micro-pores on the surface of ACF, the ST process was adopted as an pre-treatment method. After treatment of ST process, ACF properties was investigated depending on the ST pre-treatment process. FT-IR, TG and elemental analysis of the ACF are carried out, and an adsorption property of ACF was also evaluated using toluene(which in typical volatile organic matter). Once the single CA process is used, the surface area and adsorption capacity of ACF were increased from 1,483 to 1,988 $m^2/g$ and from 0.22 to 0.27 $g_{-Tol.}/g_{-ACF}$, respectively. On the other hands, once the ST and CA processes are used successively, the surface area and adsorption capacity of ACF are greatly increase(where the surface area is 2,743 $m^2/g$ and the adsorption capacity is 0.37 $g_{-Tol.}/g_{-ACF}$). It indicates that the combined process of ST and CA can improve the surface process properties of ACF.

  • This study shows the mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag cement (AASC) synthesized using sulfate with NaOH solution. The used sulfates were calcium sulfate ($CaSO_4$, denoted CS) and sodium sulfate ($Na_2SO_4$, denoted SS). The replacement ratio of sulfates was 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0% by weight of slag. NaOH solution of 2M and 4M concentration was used. A sample was activated with sulfate and activated with blended activator (blending NaOH solution with sulfate) respectively. 24 mix ratios were used and the water-binder weight ratio for the test was set 0.5. This research carried out the compressive strength, flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), absorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the case of samples with CS, sample with 7.5% CS, sample with 2M NaOH+5.0% CS and sample with 4M NaOH+5.0% CS showed the good performance in the strength development. In the case of samples with SS, sample with 10.0% SS, sample with 2M NaOH+7.5% SS and sample with 4M NaOH+2.5% SS obtained good performance in strength. The results of UPV and water absorption showed a similar tendency to the strength properties. The XRD analysis of samples indicated that the hydration products formed in samples were ettringite, CSH and silicate phases. In this study, it is indicated that when compared to the use of sulfate only, the use of both sulfate and NaOH solution makes mechanical properties of AASC better.

  • In order to improve the portability of basic absorbents monoethanolamine (MEA) and glycine (Gly), both were supported on microporous activated carbon (AC). Chemical modification by alkali-metal ion exchange (of Li, Na, K) was carried out on Gly-based absorbents. All supported absorbents were subjected to $CO_2$ absorption capacity (pure $CO_2$) and selectivity (indoor level) tests. Textural and chemical characterizations were carried out on test sorbents. All impregnation brought about significant reduction of specific surface area and microporosity of the adsorbent Depreciation in the textural properties was found to result to reduction in pure $CO_2$ sorption. Contrarily, low-level $CO_2$ removal capacity was enhanced as the absorbent dosage increases, resulting in supported 5 molar MEA in methanol solution. Adsorption capacities were improved from 0.016 and 0.8 in raw ACs to 1.065 mmol/g for MEA's. Surface chemistry via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the supported sorbents showed the presence of amine, pyrrole and quaternary-N. In reducing sequence of potency, pyridine, amine and pyrrolic-N were noticed to contribute significantly to $CO_2$ selective adsorption. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm study confirms the presence of various SNGs heterogeneously distributed on AC. The adsorption mechanism of the present AC adsorbents favored Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm at lower and higher $CO_2$ concentrations respectively.

  • Blast furnace slag(BFS) is well known for its hardening mechanism in ordinary Portland cement with alkali activation due to its latent hydraulic property. The possibility of using calcium compound as activator for BFS has been investigated in this study. The hydration properties of calcium compound activated BFS binders were explored using heat of hydration, powder X-ray diffraction and compressive strength testing. Heat of hydration results indicate that the hydration heat of BFS is lower than OPC paste by about 50%. And ettringite as hydration product was formed continuously as the calcium sulfate was decreased. The maximum compressive strength of hardened BFS mortar at 28 days is confirmed to be 83% as compared with hardened OPC mortar.

  • A novel powder processing technique for the preparation of copper activated zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu,Al) phosphor by combustion process has been proposed. Exothermic reaction between dissolved copper nitrate and carbohydrazide give small-sized particles in presence of alkali metal halides at lower temperature than the traditional method of preparation. This new route takes less than five minutes and requires much less energy. The optical and luminescence characteristics of ZnS:Cu,Al phosphor thus prepared were found to be enhanced significantly. Carbohydrazide acted as fuel at $500^{\circ}C$ with rapid heating and then the phosphors obtained were heated at $900^{\circ}C$ in an inert atmosphere for 3hrs to get better luminescent properties.

  • Clinical tests revealed that the extracts of Gelidium amansii (Gelidiaceae) had a anthelmintic action and further examinations were made on the anthelmintic components of this seaweed. This anthelmintic principle is absorbed on alumina and eluted from it by alkali solution. The active principle is absorbed on activated carbon from aqueous extract and eluted from it by methanol and it is not adsorbed on Amberite IR-120(H-form). This anthelmintic effective fraction was prepared by the use of this properties. Action of the active principle of Gelidium amansii was examined pharmacologically. The active principle of Gelidium amansii was found to decrease the tensity, tonus and mobility of Eisenia foetida(Savigny) nerve muscles. The active principle of this effective fraction was submitted to paper chromatography and spots to ninhydrin were detected at Rf; 0.30-0.31(yellow), 0.26(violet), 0.2(violet), 0.14-0.13(violet), 0.9(orange) and 0.04(violet).

  • A new method for the preparation of copper activated zinc sulfide phosphors by combustion method has been proposed. Copper nitrate was decomposed with an organic fuel to give fine sized particles in presence of alkali metal halides at low temperature than the conventional synthesis. Organic compound also acted as fuel at 500 $^{\circ}C$ with rapid heating. The phosphors thus obtained were then heated at 900 $^{\circ}C$ in an inert atmosphere for 2-5 hrs to get better luminescent properties.
