  • The simultaneous addition of Al and Cr to the surface of Ni-and Fe-base alloy provides enhanced resistance to oxidation and corrosion in high temperatures. However, because of the large differences in thermodynamic stabilities of the volatile halides of Al and Cr, the codeposition of Al and Cr by halideactivated pack cementation is only possible for very specific, limited combinations of conditions. In this study, the experiments on the combinations of various metallic source powders and activators were conducted in order to obtain codeposition layers of Al and Cr on Ni with adequate composition by pack cementation. When Cr-Al masteralloy was used as a source powder, it was not easy to control Al and Cr content sensitively in the coating layers. On the other hand, when pure Cr and Al powder was used, ${\beta}$-NiAl layer containing about 20wt % Cr was obtained.

  • The development of martensitic grades which can be processed in continuous galvanizing lines requires the reduction of the oxides formed on the steel during the hot dip process. This reduction mechanism was investigated in detail by means of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) of cross-sectional samples. Annealing of a martensitic steel in a 10% $H_2+N_2$ atmosphere with the dew point of $-35^{\circ}C$ resulted in the formation of a thin $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxide film and amorphous $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ oxide particles on the surface. During the hot dip galvanizing in Zn-0.13%Al, the thin $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxide film was reduced by the Al. The $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x<0.9) and $a-SiO_{2}$ oxides however remained embedded in the Zn coating close to the steel/coating interface. No $Fe_{2}Al_{5-X}Zn_{X}$ inhibition layer formation was observed. During hot dip galvanizing in Zn-0.20%Al, the $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxide film was also reduced and the amorphous $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ and $a-SiO_{2}$ particles were embedded in the $Fe_{2}Al_{5-X}Zn_{X}$ inhibition layer formed at the steel/coating interface during hot dipping. The results clearly show that Al in the liquid Zn bath can reduce the crystalline $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxides but not the amorphous $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x<0.9) and $a-SiO_{2}$ oxides. These oxides remain embedded in the Zn layer or in the inhibition layer, making it possible to apply a Zn or Zn-alloy coating on martensitic steel by hot dipping. The hot dipping process was also found to deteriorate the mechanical properties, independently of the Zn bath composition.

  • This study investigated the effect of nitriding on the hardness and adhesion properties of $TiB_2$ coatings. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) was used for both nitriding and deposition. By applying ICP, H13 steel was nitrided at a high rate of $50\;{\mu}m/hr$. After nitriding, a Fe4N compound layer or a diffusion layer was formed according to the hydrogen/nitrogen ratio. Both layers could improve the load-bearing capacity of the substrate by increasing the substrate hardness. The adhesion of the $TiB_2$ coatings increased to $\~30N$ after nitriding, but the hardness of the coating was lowered to 20-30 GPa. However, the adhesion of the $TiB_2$ coatings with a high hardness (>60 GPa) could not be improved substantially by nitriding due to the large difference in hardness between the coating and the substrate. The grain size of the $TiB_2$ coating was larger on the nitrided substrates, resulting in a decrease in the hardness of the coating.

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) has attracted attention as a surface treatment which has high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. PEO is generally considered as cost-effective, environmentally friendly and superior in terms of coating performance. Most of studies about the PEO processes have been applied to light metals such as Al and Mg. Because the strength of Al and Mg is weaker than that of steel, there is a limit to the application. In this study, PEO process was used to form oxide coatings on Hot dipped aluminized(HDA) steel and the characteristics of the coating film according to the PEO current density were studied. The morphology was observed by SEM and component was analyzed by using EDS. The corrosion behaviors of PEO coating films were estimated by exposing salt spray test at 5 wt.% NaCl solution and measuring polarization curves in deaerated 3 wt.% NaCl solution. With the increase of PEO process current density, the pore size of the coating surface and the thickness of coating increased. It was confirmed that no Fe component was present on the coating surface. PEO coating films obviously showed good corrosion resistance compared with HDA. It is considered that the PEO coating acts as a barrier to protect the base material from external factors causing corrosion.

  • Modern industry has a wide variety of application areas such as ocean industry, construction and automobile industry. With the current circumstances, the need for anti-corrosion technology that can be used on materials to withstand in harsh environments, is increasing. In this study, we have sought to develop a metal coating technology with zinc and aluminum powders as a potential anti-corrosion material. To make a coating on metal products, a thermal diffusion coating method was used under the conditions of $350^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Optical microscope, Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM&EDX) and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to analyze a coating layer. As a result, we have confirmed that the generated amount of rust on metal parts coated with thermal diffusion coating method decreased dramatically compared with non-coated metal parts. Furthermore, the anti-corrosion performance was evaluated according to the different ratio of zinc and aluminum. Finally, we confirmed the possibility of application and commercialization of our coating technique on metal parts used in harsh industrial based on the results of these performance.

  • Since fastener bolt for airplane require high specific strength and corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used. However, the Ti-6Al-4V bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. The aim of present work is to develop hot forming technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V. Various heat-treatments were applied to specimen in order to increase hot-workability and prevent galling with die. Multiple forging were simulated with FE code to determine optimum process parameters including specimen temperature, strain rate, local strain, and thermal shrinkage. Forged samples were heat-treated again to increase their mechanical properties.

  • Al-rich coatings were prepared on hot rolled low carbon steel by hot dipping method in molten Al-bath to investigate the corrosion resistance with the possible outcomes and defects of aluminized coatings in air and $Ar-0.2%SO_2$ mixed gases. Coating microstructure was composed of an inner Al-Fe intermetallic layer and outer Al-rich layer. Aluminum oxidized preferentially to the thin, outer, protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, without forming the nonprotective iron/sulfur-oxide layer after heating at $800^{\circ}C$ for 20 h, in both the gases and provided the resistance against corrosion.

  • AI-doped ZnO(AZO) thin films have been fabricated on glass substrate by sol-gel method, and the effect of Al precursors and post-annealing temperature on the characteristics of AZO thin films was investigated. The sol was prepared with zinc acetate, EtOH, MEA and Al precursors. In order to dope Al in ZnO, two types of aluminum nitrate and aluminum chloride were used as Al precursor. Zinc concentration was 0.5 mol/l and the content of Al precursor was 1 at% of Zn in the sol. The sol was spin-coated on glass substrate, and the coated films were annealed at 550ue for 2 hand were post-annealed at temperature ranges of $300{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in reducing atmosphere ($N_2/H_2$= 9/1). Structural, electrical and optical propertis of the fabricated AZO thin films were analyzed by XRD, FE-SEM, AFM, hall effect measurement system and UV-visible spectroscopy. Optical and electrical properties of AZO thin films prepared with aluminum nitrate as Al precursor were better than those of films prepared with aluminum chloride. The electrical resistivity and the optical transmittance of films decreased with increasing post-annealing temperatures. The minimum electrical resistivity of $2{\times}10^{-3}$ and the maximum optical transmittance of 91% were obtained for the AZO thin films post-annealed at $550^{\circ}C\;and\;300^{\circ}C$, respectively.
