The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the change in the spindle speed and the feed rate on the diameter change of a hole using a boring cutter for the internal boring process of AL6061-T4 alloys. The experimental results are quantitatively analyzed by applying the factor analysis and the response surface analysis of the experimental design method. The tendency of the diameter change according to the change in the spindle speed and feed level is also evaluated. During the internal boring process of AL6061-T4 alloys, the main factor affecting the diameter change is the spindle speed in which the diameter decreases as the number of revolutions increases. In addition, the diameter tends to increase as the feed is increased; however, as the number of spindle revolutions increases, the influence of the feed decreases.
For the aluminum material of the thick-thickness more than 100mm Penetration depth Electron beam welding is effectively applicable with a characteristic of high energy intensity. But Al 6061 alloy has high crack sensitivity due to minor alloys, which are silicon, magnesium, copper etc. With a sample block of 135mm thickness EBW test was performed in vertical position. As tensile strength has $210{\sim}220N/mm^2$ with weld area broken. Bend test shows low ductility with fracture of partly specimens. Chemical contents of alloys show no difference between weld and base metal. Defect in middle weld area figures out typical hot crack due to low melting materials. Micro structure of weld area has some difference compare to HAZ and base metal. As a result of EBW test for Al 6061 alloy, it shows that weld defect could be occurred even though establishing of optimum weld parameter condition.
Al6061 aluminum alloy specimens were exposed to atmospheric conditions for maximum 24 months. 24-month exposure specimen showed some more frequent and larger size of corrosion products and pitting on the surface compared with the 12-month exposure specimens. The XRD examination revealed the dominant surface oxide phases of Al2O3 and Al(OH)3. The oxide thickness at uniform oxidation (or non-pitting) region was not much changed over exposure time. The 1.2 ㎛ deep oxygen penetration area was found in the 12-months exposed specimen near the thin uniform aluminum oxide film. The line-EDS was conducted through the penetration regions and non-penetrated grain boundary. There were signs of O and Si concentration through the penetration region, whereas non-penetration region showed no concentration of O or Si. It was confirmed that pitting is a more severe degradation mode in Al6061 (max. >4 ㎛ deep) compared with the uniform oxidation (max. ~200 nm deep) up to 24-months exposure.
Thermal stability and dry sliding wear behavior of ultra-fine grained 6061 Al alloy fabricated by an accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) process have been investigated. After 4 ARB cycles, an ultra-fine grained microstructure of the 6061 Al alloy composed of grains with average size of 500nm, and separated mostly by high-angle boundaries was obtained. Though hardness and tensile strength of the ARB processed Al alloy increased with ARB cycles up to 4 cycles, the processed alloy exhibited decreased ductility and little strain hardening. Thermal stability of the ARB-processed microstructure was studied by annealing of the severely deformed alloy at $423K{\sim}573K$. The refined microstructure of the alloy remained stable up to 473K, and the peak aging treatment of the alloy at 450K for 8 hrs increased the thermal stability of the alloy. Sliding-wear rates of the alloy increased with the number of ARB cycles in spite of the increased hardness with the cycles. Wear mechanisms of the ultra-fine grained alloy were investigated by examining worn surfaces, wear debris, and cross-sections by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
In this study, surface porosity and corrosion resistance of PEO coatings prepared on the 6061 Al alloy were investigated in terms of sodium phosphate ($Na_3PO_4$) concentrations in an alkaline solution and $NaAlO_2$ sealing. The surface morphologies of the PEO coatings clearly show that the coatings film formed in $9g\;L^{-1}$ had the lowest porosity. The $NaAlO_2$ sealing was found to remove micropores and cracks existing on the surface of PEO coatings. As a result, the $NaAlO_2$ sealing resulted in the movement of corrosion potential toward more positive value and lower corrosion current density.
Multi-step induction heating process was applied to the powder compact melting technique as a new heating process to achieve pinpoint accuracy, faster cycle time, repeatability, non-contact and energy-efficient heat in a minimal amount of time. The objective of this study is the establishment of the input data diagram of multi step induction heating process for automation of the fabrication process of 6061 Al foams with desired density. At first, proper induction coil was designed to obtain a uniform temperature distribution over the entire cross sectional area of specimen. By using this coil, foaming experiments were performed to investigate the multi-step induction heating conditions such as capacity, temperature and time conditions of each heating and holding step. On the basis of the obtained multi-step induction heating conditions, relationship between final heating temperature and fraction of porosity was investigated.
This study compared the chemical resistance properties according to various sealing treatment methods for the anode film formed during the anodization process of Al6061 alloy. Al6061 aluminum was used in four different sealing treatment methods: boiling water sealing, lithium sealing, nickel sealing, and pressurized sealing, and each sample was evaluated for corrosion resistance through a 5% HCl bubble test and the microstructure was observed through a scanning electron microscope(SEM). According to the results, corrosion resistance increased as time and temperature increased in all sealing treatment methods. Relatively, corrosion resistance was high in the order of boiling water sealing, lithium sealing, nickel sealing, and pressure sealing, and the best corrosion resistance was found in pressure sealing. These research results can be helpful in selecting a process necessary to improve the efficiency and performance of anodizing process in the industrial field using aluminum alloys.
This study was carried out to evaluate mechanical properties of the jointed Al6061/HT590 alloys by friction stir welding (FSW). FSW was conducted under the conditions with tool rotating speed of 500 RPM and traveling speed of 300 mm/min., where Ar gas was introduced to prevent the materials from corrosion during the welding process. Electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize microstructures such as grain size, misorientation angle and crystal orientation. Evolution of intermetallic compounds in Al6061 during the process were examined in terms of morphology, size and aspect ratio at three distinct zones Al base material, heat affected zone and stir zone, where transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used. It was revealed that FSW gave rise to refinement of grains as well as growth of intermetallic compounds in Al6061. The morphological changes of intermetallic compounds exerted an influence on mechanical properties, resulting in occurrence of fracture in the part of the base material instead of the jointed parts (heat affected zone and stir zone). This study systematically evaluated the microstructural evolutions during the FSW for joining Al6061 with HT590 and their effect on mechanical properties.
In this study, the bead-on-plate welding were conducted by using GMA welding and plasma-GMA welding on Al 5052 and, Al 6061 plates. For these processes, the maximum welding speeds for full penetration were compared, and various weld qualities such as bead appearance, cross-section, cracks and porosities were examined. Faster welding speed, cleaner bead surface and more stable drop transfer could be achieved by plasma-GMA welding, compared with GMA welding.
In the recent years, lightweight components fabricated with aluminum alloys have been applied into building the automobiles. Among the several competing fabrication methods, hot forging is taken as the most reliable technique to produce suspension parts such as control arms. Generally, Al forging products have been used widely for the aircraft building with the extruded stock as a starting material. For the economical base, however, the cast stocks turn to be as the forging stocks recently after a continuously casting technique was developed to produce quite a uniform microstructure enough to use for the forging process. Even more, there is a tendency to omit the homogenization step before forging, which is considered to be an indispensable process for all kinds of Al alloy, In the present study, a series of compression test was carried out to find out how the cast structure and the following heat treatments influence the deformation behavior, that is, forging characteristic.
