  • The hot curvature forming of large aluminum plates is a process used to produce spherical liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks. In this study, we describe a method to determine the optimum shape of blanks to minimize the root gap in the forming process. The method proposed in this study was applied to a small-scale model for thick plates with a curvature of 1500 mm and thickness of 6 mm. First, the shape of the curved shells was determined as the target shape, and then a coordinate transform was used to determine the optimum blank shape, which was then iteratively modified using the results of finite element method (FEM) simulations, including heat transfer, until the shape error was minimized. Experiments in forming using Al5083 thick plate were carried out, showing that the method can determine the optimum blank shape within an allowable root gap of 0.1 mm.

  • In this study, the effect of various adhesively bonded composite patches on mechanical properties of notched Al-Mg alloy plates was analyzed. For this purpose firstly, the un-notched and notched specimens were fabricated from 5086 Al-Mg alloys which have been used in armor-plated military vehicles. The surface notches as a flaw were machined with circular cutting tool to form notch aspect ratio a/c=0.15 and notch-to-thickness ratios a/t=0.5 in the radial direction on the test specimens. Then, various composite patches which reinforced by glass, carbon and Kevlar fibers were bonded adhesively at elliptically surface notches. Finally, experimental measurements conducted by applying tensile static loading. The experimental results showed that repairing with composite patches with order of carbon, glass and Kevlar fibers have remarkable effect on tensile strength of the notched plate. Also the finite element models were developed using Abaqus/Explicit code to predict the tensile strength and elongation of unrepaired notched specimen and specimen repaired by carbon fiber composite patch. The comparison between numerical and experimental results showed good agreement between them and proved the accuracy of numerical modeling.

  • We considered the uniformity of fabricated micromirror arrays by characterizing the fabrication process and calculating the appropriate driving voltages of micromirrors used as virtual photomask in maskless photolithography. The uniformity of the micromirror array in terms of driving voltage and optical characteristics is adversely affected by factors, such as the air gap between the bottom electrode and the mirror plate, the spring shape and the deformation of the mirror plate or torsion spring. The thickness deviation of the photoresist sacrificial layer, the misalignment between mirror plate and bottom electrode, the aluminum deposition condition used to produce the spring and the mirror plate, and initial mirror deflection were identified as key factors. Their importance lies in the fact that they are related to air gap deviations under the mirror plate, asymmetric driving voltages in left and right mirror directions, and the deformation of the Al sring or mirror plate after removal of the sacrificial layer. The plasma ashing conditions used for removing the sacrificial layer also contributed to the deformation of the mirror plate and spring. Driving voltages were calculated for the pixel operation of the micromirror array, and the non-uniform characteristics of fabricated micromirrors were taken into consideration to improve driving performance reliability.

  • In this research, bending and buckling analyses of porous functionally graded (FG) plate under mechanical load are presented. The properties of the FG plate vary gradually across the thickness according to power-law and exponential functions. The material imperfection is considered to vary depending to a logarithmic function. The plate is modeled by a refined trigonometric shear deformation theory where the use of the shear correction factor is unnecessary. The governing equations of the FG plate are derived via virtual work principle and resolved via Navier solutions. The accuracy of the present model is checked by comparing the obtained results with those found in the literature. The various effects influencing the stresses, displacements and critical buckling loads of the plate are also examined and discussed in detail.

  • In this study, the bead-on-plate welding were conducted by using GMA welding and plasma-GMA welding on Al 5052 and, Al 6061 plates. For these processes, the maximum welding speeds for full penetration were compared, and various weld qualities such as bead appearance, cross-section, cracks and porosities were examined. Faster welding speed, cleaner bead surface and more stable drop transfer could be achieved by plasma-GMA welding, compared with GMA welding.

  • Superplastic deformation behavior and texture evolution after equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) of Zn-0.3Wt%Al alloy were investigated in this study. ECAP was conducted at temperatures from $60^{\circ}C$ to $160^{\circ}C$ on the plate type specimens of 5 mm thickness and 20 mm width. The specimens obtained by ECAP showed typical texture with basal poles tilted away from the ND toward ED, which is called shear texture. Tensile tests were carried out at $100^{\circ}C$ for ECAPed specimens under the strain rate of 0.0002/s. After ECAP of the Zn-0.3Wt%Al alloy, elongation was dramatically increased up to 500% at $100^{\circ}C$. The effect of ECAP on the anisotropy in the superplastic deformation behavior was negligible.

  • Biomimetic apatite deposition behaviors on Zr-1Nb and Ti-6Al-4V plate with various surface conditions were examined. Both alloys were polished with abrasive papers to have different roughness and some of them were treated in NaOH before exposition in simulated body fluid. NaOH treatment was found to enhance the deposition rate of apatite on Ti-6Al-4V significantly. On the other hand, the deposition rate of Zr-1Nb was not influenced by NaOH treatment. Without NaOH treatment, the polished Zr-1Nb with abrasive paper was found to induce more apatite nucleation than the polished Zr-6Al-4V.

  • Nonlinear forced vibration behaviors of sandwich plates having graphene platelets (GPL) based face sheets have been researched in this article. Possessing low weight together with low stiffness, square honeycomb cores are mostly constructed by aluminum. Herein, the square shaped core has been fortified by two skins of GPL-based type in such a way that the skins have uniform and linearly graded GPL dispersions. The square shaped core has the effective material specification according to the relative density concept. The whole formulation has been represented based upon classical plate theory (CPT) while harmonic balance approach is applied for solving the problem and plotting the amplitude-frequency curves. The forced vibration behaviors of such plates are influenced by square-shaped core and the relative density, skin's height and GPL fortification.

  • Optimum conditions for production of semi-solid Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets was carried out by the Taguchi design method. And, Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets contained Sc (free, 0.1 and 0.3 mass %) were fabricated at optimum conditions. Evolution of microstructure in semi-solid state was investigated through various liquid fractions, holding times and holding temperatures. The Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets reheated at $615^{\circ}C$ during 30min are grain growth and it was fractured due to increasing liquid fraction before quenching. And, during reheating up to $600^{\circ}C$, grain growth of Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets contained Sc (0.1 and 0.3 mass %) was not occurred in comparison with those of Al-Zn-Mg alloy without Sc. It was thought that $Al_3Sc$ phases have a pinning effect in grain boundary and Sc content of 0.1 mass% is able to inhibit grain growth effectively through reheating process.

  • This study produced hypereutectic Al-Si clad layer on 1050 Al alloy by a novel laser cladding method. Pure Si powder was mixed with organic binder to make fluid paste which could be screen-printed on the 1050 Al alloy plate. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser was irradiated on the Si paste layer to melt and alloy with Al substrate. Different laser power of 99 W, 179 W and 261 W, was used to see the difference of the microstructure, composition and hardness of the clad layers. When laser power of 179 W was used, the clad layer had overall Si content of 38wt% and composed of fine primary Si particles and fine eutectic phase. At laser power of 261 W, the clad layer had overall Si content of 24wt% and composed of mainly fine eutectic phase. Vickers hardness of HV176.7 and HV150.3 on the clad layer was obtained at laser power of 179 W and 261 W, respectively.
