To investigate the fabrication possibility of a polymer particle dispersed metal matrix composite, polytetrafluorothylene (PTFE) particles were incorporated into the Al by the powder metallurgy process. The characteristics of a PTFE/Al composite were evaluated by measuring the density and hardness, and analysis of XRD, FT-Raman and microstructure. And wear properties of these composites were evaluated under the dry wear condition. It was possible to obtain the PTFE particles stably dispersed Al matrix composites by the hot press process at the sintering temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The wear coefficient of a PTFE/Al compoite decreased with increasing of the volume fraction of PTFE. The wear weight of a PTFE/Al composite increased with increasing of the volume fractionof PTFE in the range of 0~10 vol.%PTFE, and showed maximum value at 10 vol.%PTFE, and then decreased at 20vol.%PTFE.
$Al_2O_3$, SiC reinforced Al matrix composites were fabricated by centrifugal spray casting method and their wear resistance characteristics have been studied. Particles are generally uniformly distributed in the microstructure of as-cast specimens. In order to investigate the effect of secondary deformation, hot rolling was performed for each specimen of pure Al matrix composites with a reduction of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, respectively. Microstructure of specimen showed that particle distribution density and hardness increased because of increasing of reduction ratio. Wear test with a various sliding velocity of 1.98, 2.38, 2.88 and 3.53m/sec showed that the wear resistance characterization of composite improved remarkably compared to the normal alloy and performs without reinforced particles. Microstructural observation for the worn surface of pure Al specimens without particles showed that a change in wear mechanism seemed to separate layer by surface fatigue. In other case of Al composite reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ and SiC, the grinder type of wear mechanism was shown.
Intermetallic compound matrix composites have been expected to be established as high temperature structural components. $Ni_3Al$ is a representative intermetallic alloy, which has excellent ductility even at room temperature by adding certain alloying elements. $Ni_3Al$ matrix composites with aluminum oxide particles, which are formed by the in-situ reaction between the alloy and aluminum borate whiskers, are fabricated by a powder metallurgical method. The addition of aluminum borate whiskers disperses the synthetic aluminum oxide particles during sintering and dramatically increases the strength of the composite. The uniform dispersion of reaction synthesized aluminum oxide particles and the uniform solution of boron in the matrix seem to play an important role in the improvement in strength. There is a dramatic increase in strength with the addition of the whisker, and the maximum value is obtained at a 10 vol% addition of whisker. The $Ni_3Al$ composite with 10 vol% aluminum oxide particles $0.3{\mu}m$ in size and with 0.1 wt% boron powder fabricated by the conventional powder metallurgical process does not have such high strength because of inhomogeneous distribution of aluminum oxide particles and of boron. The tensile strength of the $Ni_3Al$ with a 10 vol% aluminum borate whisker reaches more than twice the value, 930 MPa, of the parent alloy. No third phase is observed between the aluminum oxide and the matrix.
High temperature creep behaviour of Al-5 wt% Mg alloy reinforced with 7.5% BN flakes was studied. The composite specimens showed two main creep characteristics : (1) the value of the apparent stress exponent of the composite was high and varied with applied stress (2) the apparent activation energy for creep was much larger than that for self-diffusion in aluminum The true stress exponent of the composite was set equal to 5. Temperature dependence of the threshold stress of the composite was very strong. Which could not be rationalized by allowing for the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus change. AIN particles which were incorporated into the Al matrix during fabrication of the composite by the PRIMEXTM method were found to be effective barriers to dislocation motion and to give rise the threshold stress during creep of the composite
Both an unreinforced $Al_2O_3$/Al matrix and a ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ particulate reinforced composite have been produced by the oxidation of an Al surface doped with NaOH in the absence of any other dopant. Fabrication of the matrix was initiated by the formation of $NaAlO_2$, which provides a favorable surface structure for the matrix formation by breaking the protective $Al_2O_3$ layer on Al. During the matrix growth, the external surface of the growth front was covered with a very thin sodium-rich oxide. A cyclic formation process of the sodium-rich oxide on the growth surface was proposed for the sodium-induced directed metal oxidation process. This process involves dissolution of the sodium-rich oxide, motion of Na to the growth front, and re-formation of the oxide on the surface. Near-net-shape composites were fabricated by infiltrating an $Al_2O_3$/Al matrix into a ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ particulate preform, without growth barrier materials. The infiltration distance increased almost linearly in the NaOH-doped preform.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of gas pressure infiltration on microstructure. Continuous fiber reinforced Al matrix composite wire is produced by gas pressure infiltration process. With the increase of gas pressure, porosity and wettabillity was improved. No chemical reaction product was detected at the interface of $Al_2O_3$ and Al.
The aging behavior of aluminum borate whisker ($Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$) reinforced AS52+Sr magnesium matrix composites was investigated with Vickers hardness measurements, bending tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experimental results showed that aging is accelerated in the $AS52+Sr/Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ composite compared with an unreinforced AS52+Sr alloy. The hardness of the alloy and composite increases monotonically as a function of the aging time before reaching its peak hardness and then gradually decreases. The composite reaches its peak hardness in 10 h, whereas the matrix alloy requires 30h, indicating accelerated age-hardening in the $AS52+Sr/Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ composite compared with the unreinforced AS52+Sr alloy at $170^{\circ}C$. The interfacial reaction of $AS52+Sr/Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ magnesium matrix composite is considered to play a dominant role in the strengthening mechanism, ultimately affecting the mechanical properties of the composite.
The reaction layer formed at interface between matrix and fiber has significant effects on the mechanical properties and behaviors of deformation m FRM. In this study, the mechanical properties and interfacial behaviors according to surface finishing on the fibers and according to heat treatment in FRM were investigated. FRM was fibricated by diffusion bonding method. In W/Al alloy composite and W/Al composite, W of which was coated with $WO_3$, the heat treatment was carried out thermal cycling method from 373K to 673K. In W/Al composite, W of which was coated with $WO_3$, growth of interface layer was hardly occured in spite of the increasing various thermal cycles. It was exhibited that oxidized W/Al composite were higher strength than non-oxidezed W/Al composite with the increasing thermal cycles. The compounds of fiber/matrix interface were analyzed into $WAl_{12}$, $WAl_7$, and $AlWO_3$, respectivly. Therefore the interfacial compounds of fiber/matrix seriously affected the mechanical properties and behaviors of deformation in FRM.
The formation of TiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles based on the self-combustion reaction of the $Al-TiO_2-C-CuO$ system in an Al alloy melt was investigated. With an adequate amount of CuO in the system, a spontaneous reaction occurred within the Al alloy melt at $850^{\circ}C$ and thereafter was self-maintained, producing an Al matrix composite reinforced with thermodynamically stable TiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles. TiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles contributed to a considerable increase in the strength and stiffness, demonstrating the feasibility of this method as a practical application for structural parts.
Aluminum base composites reinforced with various amount of SiC particles and Mg contents have been investigated by different fabrication method for twenty-years. In this paper, how the decomposition and dissolution behaviors of $SiCp(20{\mu}m)$ in the melt of Al composites arised was studied. As the results, the decomposition and dissolution of SiCp into the melt of Al composites increased with increase of the temperature above $720^{\circ}C$, and holding time at a given melting temperature. Because SiC is thermodynamically unstable in this Al-SiCp composite at temperature above the liquidus, SiCp dissolves and reacts with Al in matrix to form $Al_4C_3$ according to following chemical equation $4Al+3SiC{\rightarrow}Al_4C_3+3Si$, Si decomposed and dissolved from SiCp increases Si content of matrix, while liquidus temperature of matrix decrease with increase of SiC content in matrix. The hardness of SiCp decreased with increase of the melting temperature, the hardness of the matrix /particle interface increased with increase of the melting temperature due to increase of the $Mg_2Si$ and $Al_4C_3$ intermetallic compounds, etc.
