  • We investigated the quench characteristics of meander line type resistive superconducting fault current limiters based on YBCO thin films grown on 2" diameter LaAlO$_3$ substrates. A gold layer was deposited onto the 0.4 ${\mu}$ m thick YBCO film to disperse the heat generated at hot spots, prior to patterning into 1 mm wide meander lines by photolithography. The limiters were tested with simulated fault currents of various amplitudes. The quench started at 10 A and was completed within 1 msec at the fault current of 65 A$_{peak}$. The dynamic quench characteristics were explained based on the heat conduction within the film and the heat transfer between the film and the surrounding liquid nitrogen. The heat transfer coefficient per unit area was estimated to be 3.0 W/cm$^2$K.

  • We developed a three dimensional cardiac tissue model based on human cardiac cell and mono-domain approximation for action potential propagation. The human myocyte model proposed by ten Tusscher et al. (TNNP model) (2004) for cell electrophysiology and a mono-domain method for electric wave propagation are used to simulate the cardiac tissue propagation mechanism using a finite element method. To delineate non-homogeneity across cardiac tissue layer, we used three types of cardiac cell models. Ansiotropic effect of action potential propagation is also considered in this study. In this 3D anisotropic cardiac tissue with three cell layers, we generated a reentrant wave using S1-S2 protocol. Computational results showed that the reentrant wave was affected by the anisotropic properties of the cells. To test the reentrant wave under pathological state, we simulated a hypertopic model with non-excitable fibroblasts in stochastic manner. Compared with normal tissue, the hypertropic tissue result showed another center of reentrant wave, indicating that the wave pattern can be more easily changed from regular with a concentric focus to irregular multi-focused reentrant waves in case of patients with hypertrophy.

  • In this paper, HBT's with lower phase noise and passive elements, such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, for resonance and impedance matching networks are designed, fabricated, tested, and carefully analysed, respectively, and then, they are integrated for the design and fabrication of functional X-band oscillators with lower phase noise. Epi-wafers for HBT's with the structure of graded $Al_{x}$G $a_{1-x}$ As emitter and C-doped base layer of 700.angs. thick were used to specially emphasize the improvement of $f_{T}$ and $f_{max}$, and the lowering of phase noise, in design aspects. At the test frequencies of 12GHz, capacitances of MIM capacitors, spiral inductor, and resistances are 0.5~10pF, 0.4~11.06nH, and 20~1,380.ohm., respectively. The emitter size of HBY's for the X-band MMIC oscillators is 3*10u $m^{2}$, and find chip size is 0.9*0.9m $m^{2}$..EX>.

  • 9,10-Bis(bromomethyl)phenanthrene reacted with fullerenes via a Diels-Alder reaction to give phenanthrene-substituted fullerene mono-adducts (PCMA) and bis-adducts (PCBA) as electron acceptors for organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). The syntheses of the fullerene derivatives were confirmed by $^1H$ $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. PCMA and PCBA showed better light absorption in the UV-visible region than $PC_{61}BM$. Their electrochemical properties were measured using cyclic voltammetry. Accordingly, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of PCMA and PCBA were -3.66 and -3.57 eV, respectively. Photovoltaic cells were fabricated with a ITO/PEDOT:PSS/poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT):acceptor/LiF/Al configuration, where P3HT and PCBA are the electron donors and acceptors, respectively. The polymer solar cell fabricated using the P3HT:PCBA active layer showed a maximum power conversion efficiency of 0.71%.

  • In the trackbed design using elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is an important input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The resilient moduli of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed using nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be measured by in-situ and laboratory seismic tests. The prediction models of resilient modulus varying with the deviatoric or bulk stress were proposed (Park et al., 2008). To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation. The prediction models proposed for resilient modulus were verified by the comparison of the calculated vertical displacements with measured ones during train passages.

  • Ta2O5 films were deposited on the p-Si(100) substrates by ECR-PECVD and annealed in O2 atmosphere. The thicknesses of Ta2O5/SiO2 layers were measured by an ellipsometer and a cross-sectional TEM. Annealing in O2 atmosphere enhanced the stoichiometry of the Ta2O5 film and reduced the impurity carbon content. Ta2O5 films were crystallized at the annealing temperatures above 75$0^{\circ}C$. The best leakage current characteristics and the maximum dielectric constant of Ta2O5/SiO2 film capacitor were observed in the specimen annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ and 75$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flat band voltage of the Al/Ta2O5/SiO2/p-Si MOS capacitor was varied in the range of -0.6~-1.6 V with the annealing temperature. The conduction mechanism in the Ta2O5 film, the variation of the effective oxide charge density with the annealing temperature, and the effective electric field distribution in the Ta2O5/SiO2 double layer were also discussed.

  • Three-layer porous alumina-mullite composites with a symmetric gradient porosity are prepared using a controlled freeze/gel-casting method. In this work, tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash with an appropriate addition of $Al_2O_3$ were used as the freezing vehicle and the starting material, respectively. When sintered at $1300-1500^{\circ}C$, unidirectional macro-pore channels aligned regularly along the growth direction of solid TBA were developed. Simultaneously, the pore channels were surrounded by less porous structured walls. A high degree of solid loading resulted in low porosity and a small pore size, leading to higher compressive strength. The sintered porous layered composite exhibited improved compressive strength with a slight decrease in its porosity. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$, the layered composite consisting of outer layers with a 50 wt% solid loading showed the highest compressive strength ($90.8{\pm}3.7MPa$) with porosity of approximately 26.4%.

  • Highly sensitive and mechanically stable gas sensors have been fabricated using the microfabrication and micromachining techniques. The sensing materials used to detect the offensive $CH_3SH$ and $(CH_3)_3N$ gases are 1 wt% Pd-doped $SnO_2$ and 6 wt% $Al_2O_3$-doped ZnO, respectively. The optimum operating temperatures of the devices are $250^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$ for $CH_3SH$ and $(CH_3)_3N$, respectively and the corresponding heater power is, respectively, about 55mW and 85mW. Excellent thermal insulation is achieved by the use of a double-layer membrane: i.e. $0.2{\mu}m$-thick silicon nitride and $1.4{\mu}m$-thick phosphosilicate glass. The sensors are mechanically stable enough to endure the heat cycles between room temperature and $350^{\circ}C$, at least for 30 days.

  • In this paper, we describe the PTP notion of robot manipulators by neural networks. The PTP motion requires the inverse kinematic redline and the joint trajectory generation algorithm. We use the multi-layered Perceptron neural networks and the Error Back Propagation(EBP) learning rule for inverse kinematic problems. Varying the number of hidden layers and the neurons of each hidden layer, we investigate the performance of the neural networks. Increasing the number of learning sweeps, we also discuss the performance of the neural networks. We propose a method for solving the inverse kinematic problems by adding the error compensation neural networks(ECNN). And, we implement the neural networks proposed by Grossberg et al. for automatic trajectory generation and discuss the problems in detail. Applying the neural networks to the current trajectory generation problems, we can refute the computation time for trajectory generation.
