  • This study has investigated the effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-6Al-xZn(x = 1.5, 2.5) alloys fabricated by the squeeze casting process. The microstructures of as-squeeze cast were composed of pro-eutectic ${\alpha}$, super saturated ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ compound. Aged at both $200^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$, Mg-6Al-xZn alloys showed the peak hardness due to the formation of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates. The discontinuous precipitates of the lamella type are predominant at $200^{\circ}C$ aging treatment, while the finely dispersed continuous precipitates were dominant at $240^{\circ}C$ aging treatment. Mg-6Al-xZn alloys fabricated by the squeeze casting process had the better combination of tensile strength and elongation compared to the conventionally cast alloys. As zinc contents increased, the tensile strength was increased by the solid solution strengthening effect of zinc.

  • This paper is presented for showing the effect of cooling rate on dendrite arm spacing, correlated with the chilling power of molding materials (conventional plaster, foamed plaster, silica sand) and section thickness, and also showing relationship between dendrite arm spacing and mechanical properties for an aluminum - 8.6 percent silicon - 3.6 percent copper alloy. Local solidification time $(t_f)$ and secondary dendrite arm spacing (d) could be varied widely in accordance with the molding materials and casting thickness, and the following relationship is obtained: $d=9.4t_f\;^{0.31}$ A good correlation between dendrite arm spacing and mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness was found, that is, mechanical properties decreased in a linear manner with increase in log of secondary dendrite arm spacing. Ultimate tensile strength in conventional plaster mold casting decreased by 15 percent comparing with the sand casting, where as in foamed plaster mold casting, it decreased by 30 percent comparing with the sand casting. From those results, it has been verified that DAS might be the most representative parameter for predicting mechanical properties varing with the different cooling condition.

  • It was known that the excellent wear resistance of hyper eutectic aluminum alloy is based on the primary Si particles which are distributed in the base metal. When the primary Si volume fraction increases, the smaller size have excellent wear resistance characteristics. However, this trend always does not match. There is no investigation result based on the materials and methods for real using parts. In this study, using the automotive parts manufacturer currently in use hyper eutectic Al alloy tensile test specimen type sample was fabricated by 350Ton high pressure die-casting machine. Then, fluidity, tensile, impact and wear resistance properties were evaluated. If the casting quality, primary Si size, fraction and distribution are similar, mechanical properties and wear resistance are equivalent.

  • Aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced by SiC particles were prepared by rheocompocasting, a process which consists of the incoporation and distribution of reinforcement by stirring within a semi-solid alloy. When the volume fraction of SiCp and stirring speed were fixed, the dispersion of SiCp in Al-matrix alloy depended on stirring time and solid volume fraction in slurry. The results were as follows : 1) As a dispersed SiCp during stirring at $647^{\circ}C$ in 6063-Al alloy, SiC was better dispersed than that other temperature, where solid volume fraction was 43% in slurry. 2) When increased solid fraction in slurry, rate of dispersing SiC increased during stirring and porosities decreased in matrix alloy after casting. 3) Inspite of stirring with 800rpm, since solid particles of matrix alloy in slurry joined each other and occured joining growth, so that SiC was not dispersed into solid particle.

  • Low-cost alloying elements were added to a modified Al-6.5Si alloy and its microstructure, tensile and impact toughness properties were investigated. The alloying elements added were Mg, Zn, and Cu, and two kinds of alloy A (Mg:0.5, Zn:1, Cu:1.5 wt.%) and alloy B (Mg:2, Zn:1.5, Cu:2 wt.%) were prepared. In the as-cast Al-6.5Si alloys, Si phases were distributed at the dendrite interfaces, and Al2Cu, Mg2Si, Al6 (Fe,Mn) and Al5 (Fe,Mn)Si precipitates were also observed. The size and fraction of casting defects were measured to be higher for alloy A than for alloy B. The secondary dendrite arm spacing of alloy B was finer than that of alloy A. It was confirmed by the JMatPro S/W that the cooling rate of alloy B could be more rapid than alloy A. The alloy B had higher hardness and strength compared to the values of alloy A. However, the alloy A showed better impact toughness than alloy B. Based on the above results, the deformation mechanism of Al-6.5Si alloy and the improving method for mechanical properties were also discussed.

  • 7000 series Al alloy with good mechanical properties has been focused with tendency to reduce the components weight of aircraft and automobile. However, it is difficult to manufacture a sound extruded product because of segregation, grain growth, casting defect, surface defect, decreasing extrudability and so on. The objective of this study is to manufacture a new 7000 al alloy more than the extrudability of A7N01 and A7003 through controlling the weight (%) Mg, Zn, Si. Hot extrusion experiments on the axisymmetric rod are performed in 500℃ and also performed analysis of the same process using unmerical analysis method, a coupled rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method. Extrusion limit diagram was obtained for the developed alloy by FE-simulation in order to define the relationship of extrusion speed and initial billet temperature.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the mechanical properties of AlSiCu aluminum alloy by the two-step solution heat treatment. The microstructure of gravity casting specimen represents a typical dendrite structure having a secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of 40 mm. In addition to the Al matrix, a large amount of coarsen eutectic Si phase, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase, and Fe-rich phases are generated. The eutectic Si phases are fragmented and globularized with solution heat treatment. Also, the $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase is resolutionized into the Al matrix. The $2^{nd}$ solution temperature at $525^{\circ}C$ might be a optimum condition for enhancement of mechanical properties of AlSiCu aluminum alloy.

  • The influences of Bi addition on morphological modification of $Mg_2Si$ phase and mechanical properties were investigated in Mg-7%Al-0.5%Si casting alloy. It was found that the addition of 0.3%Bi changed the $Mg_2Si$ morphology from coarse Chinese script type to polygonal type, and significantly decreased the size to ~5 ${\mu}m$ or less with the increase of number density. The modification of $Mg_2Si$ phase by the addition of Bi resulted in the improvement of tensile properties of the Mg-Al-Si alloy at RT and $175^{\circ}C$.

  • This study presents the wear characteristics of Ti alloys (Pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) fabricated by centrifugal precision casting in an Ohara dental titanium casting machine. It was found that the hardness of the surface region is higher than that of the interior region. It is considered that the oxygen adsorption in the surface region during casting, leads to the interstitial solid solution hardening. Wear resistance incerases in the order of pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys. The interior hardness value increases in the same order. The specific wear rate increases with applied load and increases monotonously with sliding speed. The Fe transfer from the counterpart material was observed on the worn surface of the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy. Oxidative wear occurs at low sliding speeds and mechanical fracture wear occurs at high sliding speeds.

  • The anodic oxidation behaviour of a cast component of AC2A Al alloy with machined surface and ascast surface was investigated in sulfuric acid solution. The anodized specimen showed relatively uniform and thick anodic oxide films on the as-cast surface, while non-uniform and very thin oxide films were formed on the machined surface. Non-anodized as-cast surface was observed to be covered with thick oxide scales and showed a number of second-phase particles containing Si, while non-anodized machined surface showed no oxide scales and relatively very small number of Si particles. Thus, the very limited growth of anodic oxide films on the as-cast surface was attributed to the presence of thick oxide scales and Si-containing second-phase particles on its surface.
