The Research of Airfoil Development for Wind Turbine Blade (풍력 블레이드용 익형 개발에 대한 연구)

  • This research describes on airfoil shape design, crucial to core technique and algorithm optimization for the wind turbine blade development. We grasped the parameter to define the airfoil shape in the wind turbine blade and aircraft, and the important performance characteristic of the airfoil. The airfoil shape function is selected by studying which is suitable for wind turbine blade airfoil development. The selected method is verified by to compare the generated airfoil shape with base airfoil. The new airfoils were created by the selecting shape function based on the well-known airfoil for wind turbine blades. In addition, we performed aerodynamic analysis about the generated airfoils by XFOIL and estimated the point of difference in the airfoil shape parameter using the aerodynamic performance results which is compared with basic airfoil. This result data applies to the fundamental research for a wind turbine blade optimization design and accomplished the aerodynamic analysis manual.

  • Purpose of the present study is to develop a computational design program for shape optimization, combining the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. The present methodology is then validated in three cases of aerodynamic shape optimization. In the numerical optimization, a feasible direction optimization algorithm and shape functions are considered. In the flow analysis, the Navier-Stokes equations are discretized by a cell-centered finite volume method, and Roe's flux difference splitting TVD scheme and ADI method are used. The developed design code is applied to a transonic channel flow over a bump, and an external flow over a NACA0012 airfoil to minimize the wave drag induced by shock waves. Also a separated subsonic flow over a NACA0024 airfoil is considered to determine a maximum allowable thickness of the airfoil without separation.

  • In the shape design optimization of an airfoil, the shape function has been used to find the optimal airfoil shape for given conditions. The parameters determining the airfoil shape are used in the shape design optimization as design variables. However, they usually don't have physical meaning. The PARSEC (Parametric Shapes) function is a recently proposed shape function and its parameters have the physical meaning. In this study the usefulness of the PARSEC is tested for the RAE2822 airfoil in the transonic flow region to reduce the shock strength and the result is compared with Hicks-Henne function. The optimized airfoils reduce the shock strength and they show similar result.

  • Aerodynamic design optimization of rotor airfoil has been performed with advanced design method for improved aerodynamic characteristics of ONERA airfoils as a baseline. A multiple response surface method is used to consider various consider various constraints in rotor airfoil design. Airfoil surface and mean camber line are modified using various shape functions. Numerical simulations are performed using KFLOW, a Navier-Stokes solver with shear stress transport turbulence model. The present design method provides favorable configurations for the high performance rotor airfoil. Resulting optimized air foils give better aerodynamic performance than the baseline airfoils.

  • In this study, an aerodynamic shape optimization system was developed to study the optimal shape of airfoil. The system consists of GA (Genetic Algorithm) and CFD code based on the Navier-Stokes equation. Lift-drag ratio is chosen as the object function and optimization is conducted for PARSEC airfoil with nine design variables, which is very efficient in representing the surface geometry of airfoil.

  • Recently with growth in the capability of super computers and Parallel computers, shape design optimization is becoming easible for real problems. Also, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) techniques have been improved for higher reliability and higher accuracy. In the shape design optimization, analysis solvers and optimization schemes are essential. In this work, the Roe's 2nd-order Upwind TVD scheme and DADI time march with multigrid were used for the flow solution with the Euler equation and FDM(Finite Differenciation Method), GA(Genetic Algorithm) and Kriging were used for the design optimization. Kriging were applied to 2-D airfoil design optimization and compared with FDM and GA's results. When Kriging is applied to the nonlinear problems, satisfactory results were obtained. From the result design optimization by Kriging method appeared as good as other methods.

  • Optimization with metamodel is one of numerical optimization methods. Response surface method is performed for making metamodel. The Hcks-Henne function is used for designing 2D shape of the airfoil and spring analogy is used to change the grid according to the change in shape of the airfoil. Aerodynamic coefficient required for response surface method are obtained by using Navier-Stokes solver with $\kappa-\omega$ shear stress transport turbulence model. For the baseline airfoils, OA 312, OA 309, and OA 407 airfoils select and optimize to improve aerodynamic performance.

  • In this study, the reliability-based design optimization of the airfoil was performed. PARSEC function was used to consider the uncertainty of the aerodynamic shape for the reliability-based shape optimization of airfoils. Among various reliability analysis methods, the moment method was used to compute the probability of failure of the aerodynamic performance. The accuracy of the reliability analysis was compared with other methods and it was found that the moment method predicts the probability of failure accurately. Deterministic and reliability-based optimizations were performed for the shape of the airfoil and it was demonstrated that reliability-based optimum assures the aerodynamic performances under uncertainties of the shape of the airfoil.

  • The design of airfoil had practiced by repeat tests in its first stage, though an airfoil has as been designed based on simulations according to techniques of computational fluid dynamics. Here, using of traditional optimization is unsuitable because a state of flux is hypersensitive to the shape of airfoil. Therefore the paper optimized the shape of airfoil in transonic region using a genetic algorithm (GA). Response surfaces are based on back propagation neural network (BPN) and regression model. Training data of BPN and regression model were obtained by computational fluid dynamic analysis using CFD-ACE, and each analysis has been designed by design of experiments.
