  • The paper focuses on the integration of a non-linear one-dimensional model of Synthetic Jet (SJ) actuator in a well-assessed numerical simulation method for turbulent compressible flows. The computational approach is intended to the implementation of a numerical tool suited for flow control simulations with affordable CPU resources. A strong compromise is sought between the use of boundary conditions or zero-dimensional models and the full simulation of the actuator cavity, in view of long-term simulation with multiple synthetic jet actuators. The model is integrated in a multi-domain numerical procedure where the controlled flow field is simulated by a standard CFD method for compressible RANS equations, while flow inside the actuator is reduced to a one-dimensional duct flow with a moving piston. The non-linear matching between the two systems, which ensures conservation of the mass, momentum and energy is explained. The numerical method is successfully tested against three typical test cases: the jet in quiescent air, the SJ in cross flow and the flow control on the NACA0015 airfoil.

  • This paper describes a brief aerodynamic design procedure of multi-stage axial turbine. The design procedure was established including one dimensional scratch design, through flow analysis with empirical correlations, two dimensional airfoil design and three dimensional airfoil stacking. Detailed aerodynamic performance assessment was done with full three dimensional CFD method at the design and off design conditions to construct turbine performance map. With the present method, aerodynamic design procedure of 1st and 2nd stages of high pressure turbine for 10,000lbf class turbofan engine was introduced.

  • Ice accretion is one of the potential hazards in airplane flight, adversely affecting aircraft aerodynamic. There are two distinct icing analysis that can be simulated. One is predicting the effect of ice on the aerodynamic performance of airfoils when ice geometry is known. The other is simulating ice accretion. This work presents the method of icing accretion analysis. This work presents an Eulerian approach to calculate the droplet collection efficiency on the 2D airfoil. The initial flow solution are obtained the FLUENT and copled with droplet motion in the ambient condition.

  • The transient response of an airfoil to a rapidly deploying spoiler is numerically investigated using the turbulent compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. Algebraic Baldwin-Lomax model, Wilcox $\kappa-\omega$ model, and SST $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model are used to calculate the unsteady separated flow due to the rapid spoiler deployment. The spoiler motion relative to a stationary airfoil is treated by an overset grid hounded by a Dynamic Domain-Dividing Line which has been devised by the authors. The adverse effects of the spoiler influenced by the spoiler location and the hinge gap are expounded. The numerical results are in reasonably good agreement with the existing experimental data.

  • A numerical model capable of simulating a 2-D airfoil flying over in the vicinity of the waves is discussed. Instead of treating the problem as a heaving oscillation one above the rigid flat wall, sources are distributed on the prescribed wave profile. The wave deformation due to the airfoil is assumed to be negligible and treated as a rigid undulated wall. The source and vortex are distributed on the surface of the foil. It is found that the variation of $C_L$ with wave steepness in severe and that the lift variation due to waves decreases as the wing height above the water surface increases.

  • Wall correction method for wind tunnel test is reviewed and applied to the numerical experimental results obtained at the wind tunnel condition. The corrected lift coefficient agrees well with the reference data generated from the grid having very far boundary However the corrected drag coefficient presents some deviation from the reference data.

  • The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's propulsion mechanism of the Weis-Fogh type, in which a airfoil moves reciprocally in a channel, are studied in this paper using the advanced vortex method. The airfoil and the channel are approximated by a finite number of source and vortex panels, and the free vortices are introduced from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart low and the pressure field is calculated from integrating the equation given by the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields. Two-dimensional unsteady viscose flows of this propulsion mechanism are numerically clarified, and the calculated results agree well with the experimental ones.

  • In case that a general cusp-crack shaped inclusion expressed in a polynominal form of conformal mapping function exists in a two dimensional elastic body under uniform heat flow, the complex potential and thermal stress intensity factors are derived. Two thermal boundary conditions are considered, one an insulated rigid inclusion and the other a rigid inclusion with fixed boundary temperature. The previous solutions of the thermal stress intensity factors for symmetrical airfoil and lip type rigid inclusions are obtained from the general solution of the thermal stress intensity factors.

  • A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil on the optimum flap height using NACA0015 Wells turbine. The five double flaps which have 0.5% difference were selected. A Navier-Stokes code, CFX-TASCflow, was used to calculate the flow field of the Wells turbine. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the three dimension numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. This paper tries In optimized disign the double flap of Wells turbine with the numerical analysis.

  • It is known that an oscillating airfoil can produce a driving force through the generation of a reversed $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortex street, and this can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. We have been examined various conditions such as frequency number, amplitude in NACA 0010. As Strouhal number is greater than 0.08, wake profile with velocity deficit can be transformed into the wake with velocity excess. We also presented the experimental results on the unsteady vortices structure of the heaving airfoil at various parameters.
