Environmental test campaign of a 6U CubeSat Test Platform equipped with an ambipolar plasma thruster

  • The increasing interest in CubeSat platforms ant their capability of enlarging the frontier of possible missions impose technology improvements. Miniaturized electrical propulsion (EP) systems enable new mission for multi-unit CubeSats (6U+). While electric propulsion systems have achieved important level of knowledge at equipment level, the investigation of the mutual impact between EP system and CubeSat technology at system level can provide a decisive improvement for both the technologies. The interaction between CubeSat and EP system should be assessed in terms of electromagnetic emissions (both radiated and conducted), thermal gradients, high electrical power management, surface chemical deposition, and quick and reliable data exchanges. This paper shows how a versatile CubeSat Test Platform (CTP), together with standardized procedures and specialized facilities enable the acquisition fundamental and unprecedented information. Measurements can be taken both by specific ground support equipment placed inside the vacuum facility and by dedicated sensors and subsystems installed on the CTP, providing a completely new set of data never obtained before. CTP is constituted of a 6U primary structure hosting the EP system, representative CubeSat avionics and batteries. For the first test campaign, CTP hosts the ambipolar plasma propulsion system, called Regulus and developed by T4I. After the integration and the functional test in laboratory environment, CTP + Regulus performed a Test campaign in relevant environment in the vacuum chamber at CISAS, University of Padua. This paper is focused on the test campaign description and the main results achieved at different power levels for different duration of the firings.

  • Recently, the drone's equipment development and software technology have dramatically improved. With such developments, the applicability is increasing in various fields that require rapid geospatial information, and in practice, regulations and systems have been established, and the fields in use are increasing. Also, in Korea, corporations and public institutions are actually using and researching drones in fields such as aircraft development, communication technology development, construction site use, and surveying. However, there are no fields where drones are actually used in road construction sites. Therefore, in this study, to utilize drones that have been actively used in the civil engineering and construction fields for road construction, we investigated the current status of the Korea Highway Corporation's field drone use research and classified the possibility of drone introduction by road construction. Finally, a method of using drones at road construction sites was proposed to prepare a method for using drones at road construction sites.

Disturbance observer based anti-disturbance fault tolerant control for flexible satellites

  • In the field of aerospace engineering, accurate control of a spacecraft's orientation is often very important to mission success. Therefore, attitude control is a technically plentiful and extensively studied subject in controls literature during recent decades. This investigation of spacecraft attitude control is assumed to address two important aspects of the problem solutions. One sliding mode anti-disturbance control for utilization of faulty actuator components and another one disturbance observer based control to improve the pointing accuracy in the absence of anti-vibration equipment for the elastic appendages like a solar panel. Simultaneous occurrence of vibration due to flexible appendages and reaction degradation due to failure in attitude actuators complicates this case. The advantage of this method is acquisition proper control by the combination of disturbance observer and sliding mode compensation that form a fault tolerant control for the concerned satellite attitude control system. Furthermore, the proposed composite method indicates that occurrence the failure in actuators and even elastic solar panel vibration effect may be handled directly without reconfiguring the control components or providing piezoelectric devices. It's noteworthy, attitude quaternion and angular velocity commands are robustly tracked via controllers to become inclined to zero.

Concept Car Development using Personal Digital Design Process based on Engineering Technology (공학 기술 기반 개인 디지털 디자인 프로세스를 적용한 컨셉카 개발)

  • Every car manufacturer desires to reduce the new car development time spent in improving the safety, NVH, lightweight, reliability and environment friendly features of the car. Other considerations such as planning, exterior and interior styling, packaging, color, and material selection increase the complexity of the car design process. This paper proposes a personal DDP (Digital Design Process) to utilize the engineering analysis and design/styling software for car design. DDP can be efficiently used by a team of car research center or a studio with small number of engineers, helping ordinary engineers becoming ambidextrous in design as well as engineering applications. The concept model starts from idea sketch, rendering, and 3D surface model with CAS (Computer Aided Styling) to the final safety estimation by using proposed DDP based on engineering technology (CAD, CAE). The concept model proposed a hydrogen fuel cell sports coupe which could be available within next 10 years. The proposed DDP can not only reduce the new car development time but also be adapted into designing of varied products such as aircraft, yacht, electrical equipment and sports gear.

  • An unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) refers to an aircraft that has all or part of its functions to autonomously fly by grasping the surrounding environment by remote control on the ground without a pilot on board. With the development of unmanned aerial technology, civil/military forces are developing unmanned aerial vehicles for various purposes. In order to control unmanned aerial vehicles from the ground, communication protocols between unmanned aerial vehicles and ground control equipment are required, and civil/military forces have developed and used a photocall for different purposes. In this study, the characteristics of the MAVLink protocol used in the private sector and the STANAG 4586 protocol used in the military are compared/analyzed in detail to find elements to complement each other and to draw improvement measures for protocol unification.

  • The measurement of icing conditions needs to be carried out accurately by the ice detector system of an aircraft. Ice detector systems should be installed in locations not affected by backwash, rotor downwash or moving doors or other equipment. Various analyses were carried out in order to find the proper locations sufficiently far from these interfering effects. In this study, the optimum position of the ice detector was assessed using computer simulation, with respect to different flight modes, flow velocities and the amount and distribution of liquid water around the sensor.

  • In the practical control systems, the dynamic range of actuatiors is limited(or saturated) when actuators are driven by sufficiently large signals. This gives rise to a nonlinearity as a result of actuator saturation. For example, the upper limit is imposed on productive capability by available factory space and capital equipment. Other examples of those kinds of actuator saturations are a maximum torque of the actua- ting motors and a throttle position in an aircraft speed control A saturating actuator may lead not only to a large overshoot during start-up and shut-down, but also to deterioration of the performance due to the uncertainties. That is, the speed of response is decreased and, possibly, the system output may not follow the lalrge reference inputs. The large-overshoot may be accompanied by rest wind-up(or called by integra- tor wind-up) which comes from controllers with integral action in saturation operation regions. Eventually, as the overshoot increases, the system has a limit cycle or becomes oscillatorily unstable. Due to these cir- cumstances, many studies are focused on the stability and robustness of the nonlinear systems with satu- rating actuator in the time-domain as well as in the frequency-domain.

Computational Vibration Analysis and Evaluation of a Tilt-Rotor Aircraft Considering Equipment Supporting Structures (틸트로터 항공기의 탑재장비 상세 지지구조 형상을 고려한 전산진동해석 및 평가)

  • In this study, computational structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (SUAV) with tilt-rotors due to dynamic hub loads have been conducted considering detailed supporting structures of installed equipments. Three-dimensional dynamic finite element model has been constructed for different fuel conditions and tilting angles corresponding to helicopter, transition and airplane flight modes. Practical computational procedure for modal transient response analysis is successfully established. Also, dynamic loads generated by rotating blades and wakes in the transient and forward flight conditions are calculated by unsteady computational fluid dynamics technique with sliding mesh concept. As the results of present study, transient structural displacements and accelerations of the vibration sensitive equipments are presented in detail. In addition, vibration characteristics of structures and installed equipments of which safe operation is normally limited by the vibration environment specifications are physically investigated for different flight conditions.

  • Recently, the ratio of electrical part and embedded software has grown in automotive industry. ISO 26262, 'Road Vehicles - Functional Safety', was published to guide development of automotive electrical and electronic part in 2011. This paper describes definition of functional safety and analyzes ISO 26262. The comparison of ISO 26262 and DO-178C is made, then difference between them is identified. DO-178C provides guidance for the production of software for airborne system and equipment. The core of DO-178C is a relatively minor update to the previous DO-178B, however, the big changes are captured in the supplemented documents such as DO-331, 'Model-Based Development and Verification Supplement to DO-178C and DO-278A'. Model-based design is important to develop automotive and aircraft meeting the guidelines of ISO 26262 and DO-178C. In this paper, the sample case of applying MBSE(Model-Based Systems Engineering) to AVCS(Active Vibration Control System) software development is discussed.

  • The flight simulation the fact that imitates the real situation of flight for the training or boarding experience which manages a same flight equipment with the aircraft in goal. The flight simulation of existing attached importance in the research and development which is limited in the control which is visible and physical relate with the management of the airplane directly. So, the flight simulation applied in various game or simulator etc. But, there were not researches which are actual applies in flight simulation with considers the physiological phenomenon of pilot. Therefore this paper tries the flight simulation which assumes the physiological phenomenon as the blackout and a redout of pilot. In conclusion, predicts a future.
