Evaluation of the Combat Aircraft Susceptibility Against Surface-Based Threat Using the Weighted Score Algorithm

  • Aircraft combat survivability is an essential factor in the design of combat aircrafts that operate in an enemy air defense area. The combat aircrafts will be confronted with anti-aircraft artillery and/or surface-to-air missiles (SAM) from the ground, and their survivability can be divided into two categories: susceptibility and vulnerability. This article studies the prediction of susceptibility in the case of a one-on-one engagement between the combat aircraft and a surface-based threat. The weighted score method is suggested for the prediction of susceptibility parameters, and Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to draw qualitative interpretation of the susceptibility characteristics of combat aircraft systems, such as the F-16 C/D, and the hypersonic aircraft, which is under development in the United States, versus ground threat from the SAM SA-10.

  • Infrared guided weapons act as threats that greatly degrade the survivability of combat aircraft. Infrared weapons detect and track the target aircraft by sensing the infrared signature radiated from the aircraft fuselage. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the infrared signature and susceptibility of supersonic aircraft according to omni-directional detection angle. Through the numerical analysis, we derived the surface temperature distribution of fuselage and omni-directional infrared signature. Then, we calculated the detection range according to detection angle in consideration of IR sensor's parameters. Using in-house code, the lethal range was calculated by considering the relative velocity between aircraft and IR missile. As a result, the elevational susceptibility is larger than the azimuthal susceptibility, and it means that the aircraft can be attacked in wider area at the elevational situation.

  • 종래의 stand-off 무인항공기가 감시와 정찰에 초점이 맞춰져 있었다면, 무인전투기는 여기서 더 발전하여 극한상황에서의 전투임무를 수행한다. 미래의 전장에서 무인전투기는 유인전투기가 수행하였던 적 방공망제압임무(SEAD)와 같은 극한상황의 임무를 수행할 것이며, 임무 수행 중 지대공 미사일등과 같은 각종 위협에 직면하게 될 것이다. 현재 항공기의 전투생존성에 대하여 많은 연구가 진행되고 있지만 이것은 대부분 유인전투기의 위약도와 취약도를 개선하는 방안에 대한 것이다. 무인전투기의 생존성을 고려한 설계는 일반적으로 유인전투기와 유사할 수 있으나, 임무수행환경 및 형상과 성능에 있어 유인전투기와 차이가 존재하므로 생존성에 영향을 미치는 변수들에 있어 정량적, 정성적인 차이가 존재 한다. 본 논문에서는 무인전투기의 생존성 요소 중 위약도에 영향을 주는 요소를 유인전투기인 F-16C/D와 무인전투기 X-45A를 예제로 하여 식별하고 그 민감도를 몬테카를로 모사법을 이용하여 분석하였다

  • Aircraft survivability is determined by the susceptibility and the vulnerability. The aircraft susceptibility and vulnerability depend upon the hardware and software factors. Each of the hardware and software factors consisted of the qualitative and quantitative attributes varies according to the time of the mission. In order to establish the mathermatical model to analyze and evaluate the aircraft survivability, qualitative factors have to be transformed into quantitative factors. Even if many researches in the area of dynamic concept analysis and conversion of qualitative factors into the quantitative factors has been insufficient. This research enhances these insufficient area by developing a reliable aircarft survivability analysis method. The major areas of this research are as follows. First, a method for the conversion of the qualitative factors into the quantitative factors is developed by combining the Fuzzy Set Theory concept and the Delphi Technique. Second, by using the stochastic network diagram for the dynamic survivability analysis, the aircraft survivability and the probability of kill are calculated from the state probability for the situation during mission. The advantage of the analysis technique developed in this research includes ease of use and flexibility. In other words, in any given aircraft's mission execution under any variable probability density function, the developed computer program is able to analyze and evaluate the aircraft survivability.

  • 자연 대기에서 발생하는 낙뢰는 항공기에 용융, 소손 및 아크 등의 물리적인 손상을 발생시킬 뿐만 아니라, 낙뢰의 관통 과정에서 발생하는 기체 외부의 자기장은 기체 내부의 전자장비 및 배선에 전압 및 전류 과도현상을 발생시킨다. 이러한 효과는 항공기 내부의 항공전자시스템에 유도낙뢰를 발생시켜 안전한 비행을 불가능하게 한다. 본 논문에서는 표준감항인증 요구도를 만족하는 보호회로 설계 기법과 공인인증된 시험 결과를 소개하였다.

  • Aircraft combat survivability(ACS) can be defined here as the probability of an aircraft to accomplish a given mission and not to be killed by enemy threats. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain analytically the combat survivability of the military aircraft according to the enemy and operation environment. Five factors under which a mission is being carried out are considered in this study. These factors are types and performance of enemy threats, aircraft susceptibility, aircraft vulnerability, ECM(electronic counter measures) capability, and pilot's capability. The model constructed in this study would be a useful tool to analyze ACS based on analytical method. It is also able to provide a better input data for wargaming simulation and present a criterion on determining optimal sorties for aircraft's air-to-ground mission.

낙뢰 간접영향에 대한 항공전자장비의 환경시험 (Environmental Test of Avionics Equipment for Lightning Indirect Effect)

  • Before avionics equipment are installed in aircraft, several environmental tests such as temperature, vibration, lightning, fire etc. must be conducted. One of the environmental tests is to substantiate protection designs of lightning indirect effect. It can be showed through RTCA DO-160G, section22 "Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility" test. An additional test of aircraft level is required as well after installation of avionics equipment.

  • Five cast gamma titanium aluminides, Ti-45~48%Al-2%Nb-2%Cr (nominal composition in at. %), were laser welded and their weld cracking susceptibilities were evaluated. Laser power, traversing rate and preheat temperature were systematically varied to generate a series of welds exhibiting a wide range of cooling rate ($100^{\circ}C/s-10,000^{\circ}C/s$). As Al content increased and the weld cooling rate decreased, solidification cracking susceptibility increased while solid-state cracking susceptibility decreased. Through laser beam energy input control and preheat, it was determined possible to produce high quality laser welds.

A simulative method for evaluating the resistance of the flight deck's operational capability to the attack of anti-ship weapons

  • The flight deck of an aircraft carrier is relatively vulnerable compared to its hull, as the damage of some subsystems on the flight deck may cause the carrier losing its operational capability. Therefore, this work aims to represent a simulative method for evaluating the resistance of the flight deck's operational capability in the condition that the aircraft carrier is together with its strike group and the enemy uses the anti-ship missiles with the cluster warheads to attack. In the simulations, the susceptibility of the carrier and the vulnerability of the aircraft guarantee resources are gained. Then, with the help of the closed queuing network, the residual sortie generation rate can be solved, which reflects the flight deck's residual operational capability. The results have proven that the flight deck is of strong resistance to these attacks while it is very sensitive to the loss of some key aircraft guarantee resources.

  • 항공기의 생존성 향상을 위해서는 추진기관에서 방사되는 적외선 신호를 감소시켜야 하며 이를 위해서는 후방동체의 온도 저감이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 후방동체 내/외부의 유동 및 열전달 현상을 파악하여 각 벽면의 온도 분포를 살펴보았고 노즐 벽면의 재질 특성 및 형상, 복사 차폐막의 유무가 열전달에 미치는 영향을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 항공기의 피탐지성을 낮출 수 있는 설계 조건을 확인하였다.
