In-flight icing is a critical technical issue for aircraft safety and, in particular, ice accretions on aircraft surfaces can drastically impair aerodynamic performances and control authority. In order to investigate icing effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of KC-100 aircraft, a state-of-the-art CFD code, FENSAP-ICE, was used. A main wing section and full configuration of KC-100 aircraft were considered for the icing analysis. Also, shapes of iced area were calculated for the design of anti-/de-icing devices. The iced areas around leading edge of main wing and horizontal tail wing were observed maximum 7.07% and 11.2% of the chord length of wing section, respectively. In case of wind shield, 16.7% of its area turned out to be covered by ice. The lift of KC-100 aircraft were decreased to 64.3%, while the drag was increased to 55.2%.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) is quickly being adopted by aviation safety authorities around the world as the standard for aircraft tracking. The technology provides the opportunity for live tracking of aircraft positions within range of an ADS-B receiver stations. Currently these receiver stations are bound by land and local infrastructural constraints. As such there is little to no coverage over oceans and poles, over which many commercial flights routinely travel. A low cost space based ADS-B receiving system is proposed as a constellation of small satellites. The possibility for a link between aircraft and satellite is dependent primarily on proximity. Calculating the likelihood of a link between two moving targets when considering with the non-periodic and non-uniform nature of actual aircraft flight-paths is non-trivial. This analysis of the link likelihood and the performance of the tracking ability of the satellite constellation has been carried out by a direct simulation of satellites and aircraft. Parameters defining the constellation (satellite numbers, orbit size and shape, orbit configuration) were varied between reasonable limits. The recent MH370 disappearance was simulated and potential tracking and coverage was analysed using an example constellation. The trend of more satellites at a higher altitude inclined at 60 degrees was found to be the optimal solution.

Supersonic jet fighter aircraft must have been guaranteed appropriate for controllability and stability in HAoA(High Angle of Attack) region. Limit value of aircraft enter the deep stall at HAoA is related to problem of aircraft configuration design. But, In order to guarantee the aircraft safety in HAoA, control law is designed using digital Fly-By-Wire flight control system in modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft. Also, In order to recovery if aircraft enter the deep stall or spin, anti-spin control law and MPO(Manual Pitch Override) mode is designed. AoA limiter and MPO is designed in longitudinal axis and HAoA departure prevention logic, roll command limiter, rudder fader and anti-spin logic is designed in lateral-directional axis. In this paper, we introduce the T-50 HAoA flight control law and propose that aircraft stability and adequate of these control law from HAoA flight test.
Flight data recorder (FDR) for accident investigation is required to comply with EUROCAE(ED-112) standard so that flight data can be restored when exposed to extreme conditions due to aircraft crash. Since the ED-112 standard defines the general requirements for all aircraft, it is essential to analyze detailed requirements for FDR software to apply appropriate requirements selectively according to the configuration and operation concept of a specific aircraft. In this paper, the software requirements applicable to unmanned aircraft will be analyzed and the FDR software design will be proposed. Also, a software verification method for each requirement will be presented to verify that the implemented software is designed to satisfy all requirements.

Aircraft accidents are characterized by substantial and extensive damage: the destruction of hulls and the fatalities of passengers. Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMSs) are being developed as a technological approach to prevent the aircraft accident. In Korea, a project to develop HUMS for small airplane is being executed by funding of by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. In this paper, global R&D trends of HUMS to prevent aircraft accident are described. An on-going Korean HUMS project is also explained, especially for system configuration, functionality and expected achievement.

As for A rotary wing aircraft, the configuration change about split yaw swaged rod was executed to improve hit treat capability for dealing with a long rod. The purpose of this study was to analyze if or not the quality of the split yaw swaged rod was obtained, and so the flight safety was ensured or not. Buckling analysis, Coupling Thread Strength Analysis, Thermal Stress analysis and Rod Natural Frequency Analysis were executed for structural analysis. The results of the analysis were presented that the split rod had the sufficient margin of safety and so there were no anomalies in the limit load and no failures in the ultimate load. And there were no resonances in result of natural frequency analysis. In conclusion, this study showed that the split yaw swaged rod had structural safety, so flight safety of rotary wing aircraft was secured and there was no problem in aircraft operation. It is certain that the technology of splitting the yaw swage rod will contribute to the operational Safety of the rotary wing aircraft in the future.

During the conceptual design phase of a canard type high maneuverable aircraft, the low speed small scale wind tunnel test was conducted to investigate the high angle-of-attack static stability of the aircraft. In this study, 1/50th scale generic canard-body-wing model was used for the small scale wind tunnel test. For the analysis of static stability including high angle-of-attack nonlinear characteristics, the vertical tail effects were studied due to canard deflections. In addition, the nose chine effects were studied at high angle-of-attack. Based on the results obtained from the experimental study, the configuration change effects for canard type aircraft on high angle-of-attack static stability have been able to analyze.

A military aircraft generally includes external stores such as fuel tanks or external arming, depending on the purpose of the operation. When a store is dropped from a military aircraft at high subsonic, transonic, or supersonic speeds, the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the store can be sufficient to send the store back into contact with the aircraft. This can cause damage to the aircraft and endanger the life of the crew. In this study, time accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with dynamic moving grid (moving and deformable mesh, MDM) technique has been used to accurately calculate store trajectories. For the verification of the present numerical approach, a wind tunnel test model for the wing-pylon-finned store configuration has been considered and analyzed. The comparison results for the ejected store trajectories between the present numerical analysis and the wind tunnel test data at the Mach number of 0.95 and 1.2 are presented. It is also importantly shown that the numerical parameter of MDM technique gives significant effect for the calculated store trajectory in the low-supersonic flow such as Mach 1.2.

The United States has implemented the TLCSM (Total Life Cycle System Management) to minimize the total lifecycle cost of aircraft and to improve operating availability. As a practical strategy, CBM + is required to be applied to new weapons systems. The F-35 aircraft applied PHM under CBM + concept from the development stage. In this study, we analyzed the technology trends, the level of PHM technology in Korea, and the development trends of foreign technology. Then, we analyzed the PHM technical elements and constructed the 5 phases of technical elements acquisition roadmap for military fixed wing aircraft parts PHM.
This paper proposed an application of agile management method to resolve the electrical system issues identified during the mass production phase of aged aircraft performance improvement. The proposed method was applied from issue analysis to on-site verification and testing stage, before the formal configuration control process. At this time, the project was carried out by setting a sprint period to complete the verification according to requirements through daily scrum and sprint review. As a result, It was verified that the wiring installation of the aircraft, which was the output of the sprint, met requirements within the defined sprint period.
